Angulo will need a KO to beat Canelo on Saturday, says Hunter

hunter666By Dan Ambrose: Trainer Virgil Hunter believes that his fighter Alfredo Angulo (22-3, 18 KO’s) is in a tough situation this Saturday in his fight against the highly popularly but very flawed Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-1-1, 30 KO’s). Hunter thinks it’s going to require a knockout for Angulo to get a win over Canelo, because the judges likely won’t give a decision to Angulo over a fighter that has the popularity and who brings a lot of fans to the sport.

It’s pretty clear that Angulo has to knock Canelo out to get a victory. All you need to do is look at the Canelo vs. Austin Trout fight and see how one judge had the scored 118-109 to know that Angulo won’t likely be getting a decision over Canelo on Saturday, even if he knocks him down 2-3 times. If Trout wasn’t given a decision over Canelo, then I can’t see Angulo getting a decision against him.

Hunter slams Canelo for his excuses in loss to Mayweather

By Dan Ambrose: Virgil Hunter, the trainer for junior middleweight contender Alfredo Angulo (22-3, 18 KO’s), wasn’t having any of the excuses that the red-haired Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-1-1, 30 KO’s) made for getting schooled by Floyd Mayweather Jr. last September in Las Vegas, Nevada. Canelo blamed his defeat afterwards on Mayweather running from him for 12 rounds, and not standing in the pocket so that he could land his shots and use his superior weight advantage.

Khan’s trainer: Julio Diaz is a dangerous rival

diaz33By Scott Gilfoid: Virgil Hunter, the trainer for former IBF/WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan, sees his opponent Julio Diaz as a serious threat to Khan in their fight this Saturday night in Sheffield, UK. While the vast majority of the boxing world sees Diaz as just another past his best opponent that was hand-picked by Khan’s promoters for to look good against, Hunter sees Diaz as still being a high quality fighter of the first order.

Hunter said to the telegraph.co.uk “Julio Diaz is not just an opponent. He’s a serious two-time world champion, a dangerous rival, and should be respected as such. He’s a formidable foe…this is not just a comeback fight; this is a tough championship fight.”

Virgil Hunter helping Dallas Jr. prepare for Matthysse

matthysse2By Jason Kim: On January 26th, we’re going to see how magical trainer Virgil Hunter when his fighter Mike Dallas Jr. (19-2-1, 8 KO’s) faces WBC interim light welterweight champion Lucas Matthysse (32-2, 30 KO’s) for his title at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, The Joint, in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA.

This is going to be a real test to see the genius of Hunter at work because his fighter Dallas Jr. is over-matched on paper by the stronger Matthysse, and it’s going to take a special training job by Hunter for Dallas Jr. to win.

Dallas Jr. said “Virgil is the master when it comes to game planning for a big fight…Matthysse has been beaten before and I’m confident I can beat him.”

Amir Khan looked the same

khan534By Mark Calooke: Last night Amir Khan (27-3, KO’s19) faced off against Carlos Molina (17-1, KO’s 7) in an attempt to save his career after back to back loses. Molina looked like he had been in a fight after 1 round. Khan practically dominated the fight apart from the few times he was rocked, eventually winning at the end of the 10th after Molina was pulled out by his team.

In the buildup Khan had expressed his delight at being transformed by master trainer Virgil Hunter. Khan said he had learnt a lot about defense and had become a more mature boxer. No one believed it was true and it wasn’t, he looked the same. In fact the change seems to have been a waste of time. I thought Khan may have a least gained some defense, but no.

Khan-Molina: Virgil Hunter can take Khan back to the top

Image: Khan-Molina: Virgil Hunter can take Khan back to the top(Photo credit: Esther Lin/Showtime) By Adam Mccoy: Back on the 6th of September 2008, Amir Khan stood in the centre of the ring staring into the eyes of one Breidis Prescott. Khan looked confident and why shouldn’t he? 18-0 Olympic silver medalist he had the world at his feet. Khan had expressed his desire to fight for a world title after beating Prescott. What happened next shocked the world. In fact just 54 seconds later Khan was knocked out by the huge underdog Prescott.

I’m not sure what was more embarrassing the fact this was Amir’s Sky Box Office debut or the face it was his first fight under new trainer Jorge Rubio bearing in mind Rubio chose Prescott for Khan.

Hunter: For Molina to KO Khan, he’ll have to put himself in the line of fire

Image: Hunter: For Molina to KO Khan, he'll have to put himself in the line of fireBy William Mackay: Virgil Hunter, the trainer for Amir Khan (26-3, 18 KO’s), doesn’t think it’s an easy job for any fighter to knockout Khan despite the fact that Khan has been stopped twice and hurt on a number of occasions in his pro career.

Hunter thinks it takes a really brave fighter to beat Khan because they have to be willing to take his offensive firepower, which Hunter feels is quite formidable. Khan faces Carlos Molina (17-0, 7 KO’s) on December 15th at the Los Angeles Sports Arena.

Will Khan dump Hunter if he loses to Molina?

Image: Will Khan dump Hunter if he loses to Molina?By William Mackay: Trainer Freddie Roach was just sent packing by Amir Khan following his knockout loss to Danny Garcia. Khan replaced him with trainer Virgil Hunter. However, if history is any guide Khan may soon send Hunter packing if Khan suffers another knockout loss in his coming fights.

Khan let trainer Jorge Rubio go following Khan’s 1st round knockout loss to Breidis Prescott in 2008. That’s two trainers gone following knockout defeats. It doesn’t take a genius to figure that Hunter might be the next casualty. To be sure, Hunter is one of the best trainers in boxing right now but he’s only human. He doesn’t super powers to bestow upon Khan to keep him from getting knocked cold.

Hunter: Khan is going to be patient against Molina

Image: Hunter: Khan is going to be patient against MolinaBy William Mackay: Trainer Virgil Hunter is looking to make some changes in Amir Khan’s game against lightweight Carlos Molina (17-0, 7 KO’s) on December 15th. Hunter expects Khan to be a lot more patient in this fight than he’ been in the past, while at the same time still remaining an exciting fighter. Khan and Molina will be fighting on Showtime at the Sports Arena, in Los Angeles, California, USA.

Hunter said to RingTV “Amir Khan without a doubt is a weapon in boxing…He’s embraced it [Hunter’s training]. He’s kept that child-like quality of trust. He’s very easy to train. We’ll see a more patient Amir Khan. He’ll understand when and when not to attack.”
