Provodnikov says Joel Diaz has improved his defense

provodnikovBy Jim Dower: The struggling former WBO 140lb champion Ruslan Provodnikov (24-4, 17 KOs) says his new trainer Joel Diaz has improved his defense in the short amount of time that he’s been working with him since replacing popular trainer Freddie Roach as his lead guy.

Provodnikov’s defense has been so poor his entire career that it’s not surprising that he’s seeing improvement. When there’s no defense at all like there is with Provodnikov, then any improvement is dramatic. Provodnikov, 31, will get a chance to test his improvement next month in his fight against unbeaten Jesus Alvarez Rodriguez (14-0, 11 KOs) in their 10 round fight on November 7th at the Salle des Etoiles in Monte Carlo, Monaco.

Provodnikov switches out Roach for Joel Diaz

provodnikov677By Dan Ambrose: With three defeats in his last five fights, it’s not surprising that #4 WBO, #5 WBC, #8 WBA light welterweight contender Ruslan Provodnikov (24-4, 17 KOs) would go in another direction by switching out his trainer Freddie Roach in favor of Joel Diaz, the former trainer for Tim Bradley.

What might especially sunk Roach’s ship was him not being able to be there for Provodnikov’s last fight against Lucas Matthysse last April. Provodnikov took the fight with assistant trainer Marvin Somodio guiding him, while Roach was busy training Manny Pacquiao for his big fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Viloria: Roman Gonzalez hasn’t fought anyone with my power

YouTube video

By Dan Ambrose: Former two division world champion Brian Viloria (36-4, 22 KOs) has been busy studying the past fights of WBC flyweight champion Roman Gonzalez (43-0, 37 KOs) in preparation for their October 17th fight on HBO pay-per-view from Madison Square Garden in New York.

Viloria, 34, has seen enough of the 28-year-old Gonzalez’s past fights to make him believe that he’s got enough in the tank to defeat him. Viloria believes that his punching power is greater than anything that Gonzalez has ever seen before.

Provodnikov wants Amir Khan fight

provodnikov63By Scott Gilfoid: Former WBO light welterweight champion Ruslan Provodnikov (24-4, 17 KOs) says negotiations are taking place for a fight between him and Britain’s Amir Khan (31-3, 19 KOs) for a fight that would take place in November.

What’s interesting is that Khan is saying that the talk of a fight between them is not true, and that talks are taking place for a fight against Manny Pacquiao. But if that’s true, then Khan will be sitting outside of the ring waiting for the Pacquiao fight for a long, long time.

Amir Khan vs. Ruslan Provodnikov possible for Showtime in 4th quarter of year

Image: Amir Khan vs. Ruslan Provodnikov possible for Showtime in 4th quarter of year(Photo credit: Sumio Yamada) By Scott Gilfoid: Well, we could be seeing #1 WBC, #2 WBA, #4 WBO welterweight contender Amir Khan (31-3, 19 KOs) facing former WBO 140lb champion Ruslan Provodnikov (24-4, 17 KOs) in the coming months. According to Chris Mannix of Sports Illustrated, a fight between Khan and the 31-year-old Provodnikov is possible. It’s not exactly a fight that many boxing fans would want to see for a couple of reasons.

First of all, Provodnikov isn’t a welterweight, he’s a light welterweight. Secondly, Provodnikov has lost 3 out of his last 5 fights. I mean, he was beaten by Khan’s last opponent Chris Algieri in June of 2014. Thirdly, Provodnikov was beaten in his last fight by Lucas Matthysse last April in losing a 12 round majority decision. I don’t care if the fight was close.

Hearn keeping Chaves & Provodnikov in reserve as potential opponents for Brook

brook55666By Scott Gilfoid: If the negotiations between IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook (35-0, 24 KOs) and WBO 147lb champion Timothy Bradley (32-1-1, 12 KOs) don’t work out for whatever reason, Brook’s promoter Eddie Hearn says he’ll look to match Brook against either #9 WBA, #11 WBO welterweight contender Diego Chaves (23-2-1, 19 KOs) or #4 WBO, #5 WBC, #8 WBA light welterweight contender Ruslan Provodnikov (24-4, 17 KOs).

The Bradley-Brook fight is the one that Hearn badly wants to make for October 24th in the UK, but if Hearn and Brook start talking nonsense about a rematch clause in the contract, then they could drive Bradley and Top Rank away from the negotiating table.

Adrien Broner vs. Ruslan Provodnikov possible for November

broner67By Dan Ambrose: Former three division world champion Adrien Broner (30-2, 22 KOs) could be taking a tough bounce back fight against former WBO light welterweight champion Ruslan Provodnikov (24-4, 17 KOs) this November for a fight that is being planned for Showtime, according to Dan Rafael. The Broner vs. Provodnilov fight is still in the planning stages at this point and not a given.

It’s a tough fight for the 25-year-old Broner, who lost his last fight in June to former IBF welterweight champion Shawn Porter by a 12 round unanimous decision. #4 WBC, #4 WBO, #8 WBA Broner only averaged 26 punches thrown per round in the fight. He spent much of the time holding and moving rather than throwing punches.

De La Hoya says Matthysse will move on, no rematch with Provodnikov

Matthysse decision's Provodnikov in a warBy Allan Fox: If you were one of the many boxing fans who were looking forward to seeing a rematch between Lucas Matthysse (37-3, 34 KOs) and the “Siberian Rocky” Ruslan Provodnikov (24-4, 17 KOs), you can forget it because the rematch isn’t happening, say Matthysse’s promoter Oscar De La Hoya.

De La Hoya says he’s going to move the 32-year-old Matthysse forward to bigger and possibly better fights in the future rather than putting him back in with the 31-year-old Provodnikov for another fight. This is bad news for boxing fans obviously.
