By Jim Dower: The hard-hitting lightweight Denis Shafikov (38-3-1, 20 KOs) will reportedly be fighting next month against journeyman Rene Alvarado (27-8, 19 KOs) in a fight at super featherweight on December 9th on the undercard of the Orlando Salido vs. Miguel Roman card at the Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.
By Jim Dower: Former IBF/WBA featherweight champion Yuriorkis Gamboa (26-1, 17 KOs) had to get up off the deck to defeat 28-year-old journeyman Rene Alvarado (24-8, 16 KOs) by a 10 round unanimous decision on Saturday night on HBO Boxing After Dark at the Turning Stone Resort & Casino in Verona, New York. The judges scored the fight 97-92, 97-92 and 97-93.

The winner aiming to stay relevant as a middleweight contender. Both fighters are slightly past their best but both still hungry to fulfil their previous potential.
Lemieux’s 36-3 (32) career was off to a fast start, notching up 25 straight wins, with all but one coming via knockout. Then he ran into veteran boxer Marco Antonio Rubio, who looked to be heading the same way as the others until he managed to weather the storm and expose Lemieux as somewhat of an on-top fighter, stopping him in 7 once he had emptied his tank.
