Chavez Jr. comes in overweight at 170.8 at weigh-in for Reyes fight

Chavez and Reyes(Photo credit: Esther Lin/Showtime) By Dan Ambrose: Former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (48-2-1, 32 KOs) had been bragging recently about how good of shape he’s in and how he’s unbeatable when he’s at his weight, but surprisingly, Chavez Jr. failed to make weight on Friday in coming in at 170.8 pounds for his fight against Marcos Reyes (33-2, 24 KOs) on Saturday night at the Don Haskins Center in El Paso, Texas.

After stripping off clothes to get as much weight off as possible, Chavez Jr. still weighed in .8 over the limit for the fight. However, the fight will still take place. Chavez Jr. reportedly agreed to pay Reyes’ team for being overweight for the fight. Reyes weighed in at 168.4lbs.

Chavez Jr. looking to get back to his old level

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr(Photo credit: Esther Lin/Showtime) By Dan Ambrose: Former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (48-2-1, 32 KOs) is trying to get back to the level he was at before he was beaten by Sergio Martinez in 2012. This Saturday night, Chavez Jr. will be facing middleweight Marcos Reyes (33-2, 24 KOs) on Premier Boxing Champions on Showtime from the Don Haskins Center in El Paso, Texas.

It’s supposed to be a mismatch, but I don’t think there’s such a thing as a mismatch for Chavez Jr. nowadays. Every live body they throw in the ring with him has a chance of beating him.

Chavez Jr. targeting Golovkin, wants him at 168

chavez8(Photo Credit: Jayne Kamin-Oncea/SHOWTIME) By Dan Ambrose: After talking up a fight against unbeaten WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (33-0, 30 KOs) in the recent past on his Twitter account and then failing to fight him, former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (48-2-1, 32 KOs) is once again expressing interest in mixing it up with the hard hitting Kazakhstan star.

Chavez Jr. is saying that he’d like to fight Golovkin if he’s willing to come up all the way to the super middleweight division to fight him at the full weight for the class at 168 pounds. Golovkin is said to be willing to fight former IBF/WBA/WBC super middleweight champion Carl Froch at 168, so there’s a possibility he might be interested in facing Chavez Jr. at that weight as well.

Chavez Jr. to focus on boxing skills for Marcos Reyes fight

chavez9999By Dan Ambrose: The recently beaten former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (48-2-1, 32 KOs) says he’s going to be focusing on using his boxing skills in order to get hit from now on in his fights. Chavez Jr., 29, was stopped after the 9th round after he quit in his corner last April against light heavyweight Andrzej Fonfara in their fight at the StubHub Center in Carson, California.

Chavez Jr. says he got tired in that fight after the 5th round, as he didn’t train right. He says Fonfara’s bigger size was also a problem. For Chavez Jr’s next fight against little known Marcos Reyes (33-2, 24 KOs) on July 18th, Chavez Jr. will be going back to the basics by using his jab, movement, and focusing on not getting hit as much. Chavez Jr. doesn’t want to be a “Rocky” type fighter any longer.

Chavez Jr: Marcos Reyes will make it a tough battle for me

chavez555By Dan Ambrose: Next month, former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (48-2-1, 32 KOs) will be back in the ring in a 10 round bout against little known fighter names Marcos Reyes (33-2, 24 KO) on July 18th in a 10 round bout at the Don Haskins Convention Center, in El Paso, Texas, USA.

Chavez Jr, 29, cannot afford to lose this fight because if he does, he’ll likely take a big hit in his rankings. Chavez Jr. lost his last fight to light heavyweight Andrzej Fonfara after quitting on his stool after the 9th round last April. While Chavez Jr. did slip a little in the rankings, he remains ranked high at #5 WBC, #8 WBA.
