The Heavyweight Division Is Back

fury4544

By Dominic Chapman: After years of being in the darkness and outshone by the more exciting lighter weight divisions, big time heavyweight boxing looks to be back. With Wladimir Klitschko’s dominance and not so exciting fighting style, not to mention lack of challengers with real pedigree many fans have became disillusioned with the sports glamour division.

It took Britain’s Tyson Fury to dethrone the long reigning heavyweight King Klitschko in Germany and get fans talking about the heavyweights again. However with a rematch clause in the contract the two were scheduled to fight again and with the first fight not being the most entertaining of bouts, it would be a fight mainly for the hardcore boxing fans and not one to capture the public’s imagination.

Luis Ortiz vs. Malik Scott on November 12

1-OrtizLocker Room_Hoganphotos

By Scott Gilfoid: New Matchroom Sport signee heavyweight Luis “King Kong” Ortiz (25-0, 20 KOs) will have an easy first fight with his new promoter Eddie Hearn in facing #9 WBC Malik Scott (38-2-1, 13 KOs) on November 12 at the Salle des Étoiles, in Monte Carlo. Ortiz and Scott will be fighting for the vacant World Boxing Association Inter-Continental heavyweight title. It’s not a great fight though.

Scott, 35, has lost two out of his last four fights in knockout losses to Deontay “Bronze Bomber” Wilder and Dereck Chisora. I’m not sure why Scott is still ranked in the top 10 after losing those fights. You would think that the losses would have knocked Scott out of the top 15 altogether.

Luis Ortiz signs with Hearn’s Matchroom stable

ortiz553

By Scott Gilfoid: Promoter Eddie Hearn and his Matchroom Sport company just got a little richer with the signing of unbeaten World Boxing Association heavyweight champion Luis “King Kong” Ortiz (25-0, 2 KOs) on Saturday. The former Cuban amateur standout Ortiz, 37, had previously been signed with Golden Boy Promotions in the United States.

Now with the addition of Ortiz to his Matchroom Sport stable, Hearn now has three top heavyweights in IBF champion Anthony Joshua, Ortiz and Dillian Whyte. You would hope that Hearn will match Ortiz against Joshua before the Cuban fighter gets much older.

Luis Ortiz and Golden Boy Promotions part ways

By Dan Ambrose: Unbeaten interim World Boxing Association heavyweight champion Luis “The Real King” Ortiz (25-0, 22 KOs) have reportedly parted ways. According to Dan Rafael, the 37-year-old Ortiz has bought out his contract with Golden Boy and the two will now go their separate ways. It’s unknown who the Cuban Ortiz will sign with for his next promoters. But with his kind of talent, he’s likely going to have a lot of takers. The 6’4”, 240lb Ortiz would be a great addition to Al Haymon’s team of fighters. If Lou Dibella signed him, he would give Haymon an excellent heavyweight for his stable.

Here’s what Golden Boy Promotions said about Ortiz in a statement sent out to the boxing media on Tuesday:

Luis Ortiz vs. Alexander Ustinov possible for Kovalev-Ward card

Image: Luis Ortiz vs. Alexander Ustinov possible for Kovalev-Ward card

By Patrick McHugh: Heavyweights Luis “The Real King Kong” Ortiz (25-0, 22 Kos) and Alexander Ustinov (33-1, 24 KOs) could wind up on the undercard of the light heavyweight fight between IBF/WBA/WBO champion Sergey Kovalev and Andre Ward on November 19 on HBO pay-per-view at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, according to Dan Rafael.

Vlad Hrunov won a purse bid for his promoter Andrey Ryabinsky’s World of Boxing this week, and they plan on putting the fight together. What was interesting about the purse bid was that Ortiz’s promoters at Golden Boy didn’t take part in the purse bid. It makes you wonder about Ortiz’s future with the promotional giant.

The WBA heavyweight situation

haye67777

By Gav Duthie: Despite the World Boxing Association organizing a tournament in the heavyweight division to establish a single champion within their establishment the situation at present is more complicated than ever. Tyson Fury is the Super champion but the regular title is very much up for grabs. In the last 10 years the ‘Regular’ title has been held by Nikolay Valuev, Ruslan Chagaev, Alexander Povetkin, David Haye and briefly by Lucas Browne before it was stripped from him for failing a drugs test.

The predicament seemed simple, the title was handed back to Ruslan Chagaev but after failing to respond to requests to face mandatory challenger Fres Oquendo, Chagaev expressed that he has decided to retire from boxing. As a result the WBA can do one of two things:

Luis Ortiz – Alexander Ustinov to fight on 9/17

1

By Patrick McHugh: Interim WBA heavyweight champion Luis “The Real King Kong” Ortiz (25-0, 22 KOs) will be defending his title against challenger Alexander Ustinov (33-1, 24 KOs) in the co-feature bout on the Liam Smith vs. Saul “Canelo” Alvarez card in two months from now on September 17.

The Ortiz-Ustinov fight is still being put together by Golden Boy Promotions, but it’s looking very good like the two giant heavyweights will be on the card. It’s important for Golden Boy to have a solid co-feature bout because the fight card will be televised on HBO pay-per-view on 9/17.

Luis Ortiz vs. Alexander Ustinov on Canelo card on September 17

ortiz553

By Jeff Aranow: Interim WBA heavyweight champion Luis “The Real King Kong” Ortiz (25-0, 22 KOs) will be defending his interim WBA title in three months from now against #3 WBA Alexander Ustinov (33-1, 24 KOs) on the undercard of Mexican superstar Saul “Canelo” Alvarez’s next fight on September 17 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

It’s unknown right now whether this card will be televised on HBO pay-per-view. It will depend on how the 25-year-old Canelo’s opponent will be. With Golden Boy Promotions staging the fight at the MGM Grand, which has a seating capacity of only 16,800, it would appear fairly obvious that Canelo (47-1-1, 33 KOs) won’t be fighting IBF/IBO/WBA/WBC middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (35-0, 32 KOs) on this date, because that’s a fight that Golden Boy is interested in staging it at the huge 80,000 seat AT&T stadium in Arlington, Texas.
