WBA orders Lucas Browne vs. Shannon Briggs

briggs8

By Eric Baldwin: The World Boxing Association has reportedly ordered a fight between #3 WBA Lucas “Big Daddy” Browne (24-0, 21 KOs) and #5 WBA Shannon “The Cannon” Briggs (60-6-1, 53 KOs) to fight for their ‘regular’ with a deadline at the end of this year on December 31.

The two aging heavyweights must face each other by that time frame if they want to fight for the WBA belt. The 37-year-old Browne was going to be fighting Fres Oquendo, but he still reportedly isn’t ready to fight due to a shoulder problem. Oquendo will get a title shot against the winner of the Briggs vs. Browne fight.

Shannon Briggs says he’s facing Lucas Browne for WBA belt

briggs66

By Scott Gilfoid: Shannon Briggs (60-6-1, 53 KOs) is saying that he’ll be fighting former WBA heavyweight champion Lucas “Big Daddy” Browne (24-0, 21 KOs) for the vacant World Boxing Association title next. This is the WBA title that Tyson Fury recently vacated along with his WBO strap.

If the news turns out to be true, it would be pretty shocking considering how many arguably more talented heavyweights there are in the WBA’s top 15 rankings than those two guys. The 44-year-old Briggs is ranked is ranked #8 by the WBA despite the fact that he’s not beaten anyone remotely close to being a contender since launching his two-year comeback to the sport in 2014.

Hearn: Why wouldn’t WBA sanction Joshua-Klitschko?

hearn100

By Scott Gilfoid: The World Boxing Association is expected to make their decision today whether to sanction the December 10 fight between IBF heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua and Wladimir Klitschko. Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn is bellyaching something fierce about the rumors of the 40-year-old Wladimir facing Lucas “Big Daddy” Browne on December 10 in Hamburg, Germany.

Hearn has been talking about Wladimir taking on a “soft touch” instead of facing the 27-year-old Joshua. However, Wladimir appears to be making sure that he has a good Plan-B opponent in case the WBA chooses not to sanction the fight, which is clearly a very smart thing for the talented Ukrainian to do.

By Scott Gilfoid: The good news for IBF heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua and his promoter Eddie Hearn is they won’t have to wait too much longer to fight out if the World Boxing Association will sanction their fight against Wladimir Klitschko for their fight on December 10 at the Manchester Arena in Manchester, England. Wladimir Klitschko vs. Lucas Browne possible for December 10

wladimir55

By Eric Baldwin: Former WBA heavyweight champion Lucas “Big Daddy” Browne (24-0, 21 KOs) vs. Wladimir Klitschko (64-4, 53 KOs) is a possibility for the vacant World Boxing Association heavyweight title on December 10 if the WBA fails to sanction the Klitschko vs. Anthony Joshua fight for the title.

This is news from Dan Rafael. Browne, 37, would be at a huge disadvantage against Klitschko if that fight gets made. Browne is a good puncher, but he’s never fought anyone in the class of Klitschko before. Even if Wladimir chooses to throw only jabs against Browne and hold him all night long, he would likely easily beat him.

Lucas Browne / Hatton Promotions Statement

Statement by Lucas Browne: I made clear to the public last week that I intended to do all that I can to clear my name after the devastating news of the positive drug test following my successful defeat of Ruslan Chagaev for the WBA Heavyweight World Championship.

I am now able to report to you that on February 29th shortly after having arrived in Chechnya I was subjected to a randomly timed drug test by VADA. This was a test of blood and urine. The post fight test was a urine only test. I would like to again stress it was myself and my team who requested the bout be subject to VADA testing.
