Frampton’s manager hoping to lure Santa Cruz to Belfast

frampton40By Scott Gilfoid: Carl Frampton beat 36-year-old Hugo Cazares last night in 2nd round TKO in Belfast to earn a title shot against WBC super bantamweight champion Leo Santa Cruz. But not only does Frampton and his team want the Santa Cruz fight, they also want hometown advantage by having him travel all the way to Belfast, Northern Ireland and fight in front of a hostile crowd despite the fact that Santa Cruz is the champion and Frampton a mere challenger. What they want to do is offer Santa Cruz a lot of money from the expected large gate, and then hope he caves in and accepts the offer.

“We are going to make an outstanding proposal to Santa Cruz financially and hopefully he will come over to Belfast,” said Barry McGuigan, Frampton’s manager via ESPN.co.uk. “The sooner we can get it on the better. He has got the morals and I believe he genuinely wants to fight Carl. It is all about sitting and hammering out the deal.”

Mijares: I have too much experience for Santa Cruz

11 Santa Cruz and Mijares IMG_1507(Photo credit: Esther Lin/Showtime) By Dan Ambrose: 32-year-old former IBF/WBA/WBC super flyweight champion Cristian Mijares (49-7-2, 24 KO’s) thinks his experience will be the telling factor tonight in his title challenge against the younger 25-year-old Leo Santa Cruz (26-0-1, 15 KO’s) at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. Mijares has a lot of confidence going into this fight, but not much to show for in terms of wins over high quality opposition.

In his last five fights, Mijares has beaten Jovanny Soto, Carlos Joan Gaspar Jacobo, lost to Victor Terrazas, beaten a well past his prime Rafael Marquez and Eusebio Osejo.

Carl Frampton targeting Leo Santa Cruz

frampton80By Scott Gilfoid: Undefeated #2 IBF, #2 WBC, #10 WBO, Carl Frampton (17-0, 12 KO’s) says he wants WBC super bantamweight champion Leo Santa Cruz (26-0-1, 15 KO’s) and he expects to be able to get a fight against him in the next 4-5 months. Frampton fancies himself to be up to the task of beating Santa Cruz, as he thinks his style is beatable for him.

“We’re going after Leo Santa Cruz now, and I think the fight can be realistically made,” Frampton said to Sky Sports. “I think I can get Santa Cruz in 4-5 months.”

Carl Frampton: I think I can beat Leo Santa Cruz

555(Photo credit: Tom Casino/Showtime) By Scott Gilfoid: EBU super bantamweight champion Carl Frampton (17-0, 12 KO’s) has sized up WBC 122 lb. champ Leo Santa Cruz (25-0-1, 15 KO’s) after watching some of his fights and he feels he’s got the style to beat the 25-year-old Santa Cruz.

To Frampton, he sees Santa Cruz as little more than a shorter version of Antonio Margarito, a fighter known for having slow hands and a tendency to throw a lot of looping shots. Frampton thinks he’s better than Santa Cruz, and he’s really hoping he can fight him in 2014.

Top 5 Under 25: The Future Faces of Boxing

canelo677By Chester Rivers: It’s time to face reality. Floyd Mayweather Jr., Manny Pacquiao and Sergio Martinez are on their way out, and boxing desperately need some young fresh fighters to pick up were these legends will soon leave off. The following list is my top 5 candidates who, if promoted properly, could be the next face of boxing.

1). Miguel “Mikey” Garcia, age 25, (32-0, 27 KO’s) Mikey has the potential to someday top the pound-for-pound list. Garcia’s resume list former champions Orlando Salido and Juan Manuel Lopez as his victims. Mikey did have trouble making weight in his last fight which resulted in the young champion losing his title on the scales. Lucky for us Garcia has outgrown the featherweight division and will now be competing in the deeper junior lightweight division against alphabet champ Rocky Martinez. Garcia should dispose of Martinez quite easily gaining his second world title in his second division.

Leo Santa Cruz – very exciting fighter

santacruz3By Bob Smith: I am much more of a casual fan than a boxing expert, but I can say that I was very impressed by Leo Santa Cruz on the undercard of Mayweather vs. Guerrero. He is known as “El Terremoto” or the earthquake, and there is a reason for this – he averaged over 100 punches per round in his five fights in 2012 – this is an almost unbelievable work rate.

He was the bantamweight world champion until deciding to move up to junior lightweight, for similar reasons that Mayweather, Broner, and Mares have moved up – bigger paydays, better competition, more exposure, and more chances for belts. In fact, he is currently the #4 fighter in the division as of 5/27 right behind Rigondeaux, Donaire, and Victor Terrazas, but he will fight Victor Terrazas some time in the next few months.

Leo Santa Cruz and J’Leon Love on Mayweather-Guerrero card on May 4th

santacruz3By Eric Thomas: Unbeaten middleweight prospect J’Leon Love (15-0, 8 KO’s) will be in action in a scheduled 10 round bout on the undercard of the Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero card on May 4th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada, according to Dan Rafael.

Also on the same card will be former IBF bantamweight champion Leo Santa Cruz (20-0-1, 13 KO’s) possibly facing 37-year-old former two division world champion Rafael Marquez (41-8, 37 KO’s) in a fight that will take place in the super bantamweight division due to Santa Cruz having moved up in weight.

Love, 25, is coming off of a 10 round unanimous decision win over Derrick Findley last month on February 23rd. Love won the fight by the scores of 100-90, 99-91 and 99-91, but he was far from impressive in that fight.

Canelo may be replaced by Santa Cruz or Angulo on May 4th card

angulo453By Allan Fox: The co-main event on the May 4th fightcard took a hit today with the news that WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez pulling out of the card after failing to get an agreement from WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. to fight him on September 14th.

In place of Canelo in the main event, Golden Boy is reportedly thinking of adding either super bantamweight Leo Santa Cruz (23-0-1, 13 KO’s) or junior middleweight Alfredo Angulo (22-2, 18 KO’s). Both are Mexican, and it would interest the Mexican fans celebrating the Cinco de Mayo holiday during the weekend of the Mayweather vs. Robert Guerrero pay-per-view fight card.

Frampton with small window to win IBF title; Santa Cruz will be breathing down his neck

santacruz34By Scott Gilfoid: If Eddie Hearn is going to put his fighter #9 IBF Carl Frampton (16-0, 11 KO’s) in against the winner of this Saturday’s fight between #1 IBF Alejandro Lopez and #2 Jhonatan Romero for the IBF super bantamweight title, then Hearn better do it awfully quick because IBF bantamweight champion Leo Santa Cruz (23-0, 13 KO’s) is vacating his title and he’s moving up in weight to 122 lbs, and the International Boxing Federation will likely elevate Santa Cruz to at least the #3 IBF spot, if the #1 position.

While I think Frampton is a decent little fighter, I don’t like his chances against the 5’7” Leo Santa Cruz. I think it would be a good fight, but I see Santa Cruz walking through Frampton. British/Irish boxing fans might not know who Santa Cruz is, but believe me he would be pure trouble for Frampton.

Leo Santa Cruz vacating IBF title, moving to super bantamweight

santacruz3By Dan Ambrose: Having problems making weight and not happy with the lack of big name opponents, IBF bantamweight champion Leo Santa Cruz (23-0-1, 13 KO’s) is reportedly vacating his International Boxing Federation 118 pound title and moving up to super bantamweight to go after the bigger names at that weight.

It’s a wise move for the 24-year-old Santa Cruz because he was about to be stuck with another drab title defense, this one against Jaime McDonnell that would have interested no one in the United States.
