Bay Area Boxing: It’s the Take Over

Image: Bay Area Boxing: It's the Take OverLeading the charge out of the Bay Area would be 2004 Olympic Gold Medalist Andre Ward who won a very grueling (as he would say) Super Six Tournament last year defeating Carl Froch with one good hand.  Shortly after the tournament in 2011, Andre Ward received Fighter of the Year and deservingly so.

This year it’s without a doubt in my mind that another Bay Area native WBO super bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire will receive the Fighter of the Year award upon winning his fourth fight this year against Jorge Arce on Saturday December 15th at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas.

Khan: Me and Andre Ward have a similar fighting style

Image: Khan: Me and Andre Ward have a similar fighting styleBy Scott Gilfoid: Amir Khan (26-3, 18 KO’s) thinks that he and unbeaten WBA/WBC super middleweight champion Andre Ward have a similar fighting style. Khan sees a lot of himself in looking at Ward in terms of speed, foot movement and technique. I don’t see any similarities at all between Khan and Ward no matter how hard I look. Khan reminds me more of the current version of Zab Judah, the 35-year-old Judah.

Khan said to Sky Sports “He’s [Ward] a very slick fighter. We have a very similar style because we have quick hands, quick feet and we’ve been working on the same strategies.”

Will Golden Boy drop Khan if he loses to Molina on Saturday night?

Image: Will Golden Boy drop Khan if he loses to Molina on Saturday night?By William Mackay: Amir Khan (26-3, 18 KO’s) is in a dire situation right now coming into his fight this Saturday night against Carlos Molina (17-0, 7 KO’s) on Showtime at the Sports Arena in Los Angeles, California. Khan, 26, can’t afford to lose again because that would be his third consecutive loss for him. Despite those two straight losses, Khans promoters at Golden Boy had enough faith in him to put him in the main event on this card.

However, if Khan loses this fight too it might be time for Golden Boy to consider letting Khan go, because you can’t really keep pushing a fighter that has his last three fights. To be sure, Golden Boy can keep Khan on their payroll as a gatekeeper/journeyman level guy, but you can’t really continue to push someone that is losing every time out even when you try to find weak opposition for him like Molina.

Last chance Khan!

Image: Last chance Khan! For one to understand boxing in its new light these days, with all the media hype, marketing and publicity press conferences, it does not take a genius to evaluate that at the end of the day that all this is to generate the DOLLAR. For a young men like Amir Khan, it has been the case of distractions within boxing which has led to his downfall in the past year.

Of course, luck has not been on the Khan’s side either , but not offering the kid any excuses, however, with the set of skills Khan contains, which are outstanding, but he has failed to polish his most talked about defensive game.

Khan-Molina, Wilder-Price, Santa Cruz-Guevera this Saturday on Showtime

Image: Khan-Molina, Wilder-Price, Santa Cruz-Guevera this Saturday on ShowtimeBy Scott Gilfoid: This Saturday night on December 15th, Golden Boy Promotions is putting on one of their better cards on Showtime with former IBF/WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan (26-3, 18 KO’s) facing Carlos Molina (17-0, 7 KO’s), heavyweight prospect Deontay Wilder (25-0, 25 KO’s) fighting the talented Kevlin Price (13-0, 6 KO’s), IBF bantamweight champion Leo Santa Cruz (22-0-1, 13 KO’s) fighting Alberto Guevara (16-0, 6 KO’s), junior middleweight Alfredo Angulo (21-2, 18 KO’s) making another tune-up fight against Jorge Silva (19-2-2, 15 Kos) and many, many more at the Sports Arena, in Los Angeles, California, USA.

Amir Khan turns 26 today

Image: Amir Khan turns 26 todayBy William Mackay: Former IBF/WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan (26-3, 18 KO’s) turns 26-year-old today as he gets ready for his bout next Saturday night against little lightweight Carlos Molina (17-0, 7 KO’s) at the Sports Arena, in Los Angeles, California. Khan wants to end his 2-fight losing streak and his promoters at Golden Boy have picked out someone they hope will enable Khan to do that in 5’6” Molina.

Just looking at the two fighters standing next to each other is kind of unsettling because Molina looks so much smaller than Khan. He looks like a super featherweight standing next to a welterweight. Khan’s size advantage is going to be huge for this fight, and the fact that Molina can’t punch will give Khan even more of an advantage on top of that.

Khan: I’ll be a better version of myself against Carlos Molina

Image: Khan: I'll be a better version of myself against Carlos MolinaBy William Mackay: Amir Khan (26-3, 18 KO’s) believes he’s learned enough in the weeks that he’s been working with new trainer Virgil Hunter to be able to come out on December 15th against an already badly over-matched lightweight Carlos Molina (17-0, 7 KO’s) and show him a greatly improved new version of Khan. It sounds good in theory but can Khan unlearn all of his bad habits and completely change his style in one short camp? I think not.

Khan said to the Telegraph.co.uk “I’ll be wiser in this fight. You’ll see a different and much better Amir Khan. He [Andre Ward] was giving me tips, how to be skillful and smart. It’s been very helpful. LA had too many distractions for me.”

Khan gushing about his new defensive skills

Image: Khan gushing about his new defensive skillsBy Scott Gilfoid: Former IBF/WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan (26-3, 18 KO’s) says he sees a ton of improvement in his defensive skills in the short time he’s been working with his new trainer Virgil Hunter in getting ready for his December 15th fight against 5’6″ lightweight Carlos Molina (17-0, 7 KO’s) in Los Angeles.

Khan told Fighthype.com “Already I see a big difference in my defense, especially with my sparring partners.”

Gosh, Khan has made dramatic improvements with his leaky defense in just one training camp?

Hunter: For Molina to KO Khan, he’ll have to put himself in the line of fire

Image: Hunter: For Molina to KO Khan, he'll have to put himself in the line of fireBy William Mackay: Virgil Hunter, the trainer for Amir Khan (26-3, 18 KO’s), doesn’t think it’s an easy job for any fighter to knockout Khan despite the fact that Khan has been stopped twice and hurt on a number of occasions in his pro career.

Hunter thinks it takes a really brave fighter to beat Khan because they have to be willing to take his offensive firepower, which Hunter feels is quite formidable. Khan faces Carlos Molina (17-0, 7 KO’s) on December 15th at the Los Angeles Sports Arena.

Carlos Molina getting Khan at the perfect time

Image: Carlos Molina getting Khan at the perfect timeBy William Mackay: They have a saying in boxing – “Timing is everything.” This may never be more true then with the Carlos Molina (17-0, 7 KO’s) vs. Amir Khan (26-3, 18 KO’s) fight next month on December 15th at the Sports Arena, in Los Angeles, California, USA. Khan, at one time a two belt holder at 140, has now lost his last two fights and is coming off a terrible 4th round knockout loss to WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia in a fight that took place last July.

To be sure, Molina has been carefully picked by Khan’s promoter and deemed a non-threat to Khan due to Molina’s small 5’6″ size and his long two year knockout drought. However, in this case Molina’s tiny size and long period in between knockouts may not matter because he’s facing a guy with a weak chin in Khan, and who may be even more susceptible to getting knocked out due to his knockout loss to Garcia.
