By Eric Baldwin: WBA World featherweight champion Jesus Andres Cuellar (28-1, 21 KOs) successfully weighed in at 124lbs at today’s weigh-in for his title defense this Saturday night against Abner Mares (29-2-1, 15 KOs) for their fight on Showtime Championship Boxing at the USC Galen Center, in Los Angeles, California.

Premier Boxing Champions is promoting the show. Mares weighed in at 126lbs. This is going to be a really tough fight for the 31-year-old Mares, because he’s been out of the ring for over a year since his loss to Leo Santa Cruz in August 2015. That was a grueling fight that saw Mares worn down and beaten by a 12 round majority decision by the scores 114-114, 117-111 and 117-111.

By Eric Baldwin: Former three division world champion Abner Mares (29-2-1, 15 KOs) has reportedly passed his California medical exams, and he’s reportedly ready for his title shot against WBA World featherweight champion Jesus Andres Cuellar (28-1, 21 KOs) as soon as Premier Boxing Champions can give him a date to fight.

The 30-year-old Mares has had eye problems that has slowed his progress making it back into the ring. But with Mares passing his California eye exam, according to Lance Pugmire of the LA Times, he can move ahead and take the fight with the hard hitting 29-year-old Argentinian Cuellar.

By Dan Ambrose: In a big disappointment, the scheduled June 25 fight matching former three division world champion Abner Mares (29-2-1, 15 KOs) and WBA World featherweight champion Jesus Cuellar (28-1, 21 KOs) has been cancelled due to 30-year-old Mares having a medical issue that will keep him from taking the fight in the New York. According to Dan Rafael, Mares failed two New York State Athletic Commission eye exams this week.

The Cuellar vs. Mares fight was supposed to have taken place on the undercard of the Keith Thurman vs. Shawn Porter fight at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. There wasn’t a great deal of hype surrounding the fight, as most of the attention was being spent on the main event between Thurman and Porter.
