Final Press Conference(Photos credit: Will Hart/HBO) By Scott Gilfoid: Britain’s Martin Murray (29-1-1, 12 KOs) says he won’t be playing mister nice guy on Saturday night when he gets inside the ring with WBA Super World middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (31-0, 28 KOs) in their fight on February 21st at the Salle des Étoiles, Monte Carlo, Monaco.

Murray, 32, says he’ll be playing it nice during their last press conference before the fight, but once he gets Golovkin in the ring “that’s not going to stop me wanting to rip his head off.”

Martin Murray: I will beat Golovkin

Final Press Conference(Photo credit: Will Hart) By Scott Gilfoid: While WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (31-0, 28 KOs) was taking it easy today during his press conference to promote his fight on Saturday night, his opponent Martin Murray (29-1-1, 12 KOs) was working hard to intimidate Golovkin and show the fans in attendance that he’s not just going to be the sacrificial lamb coming over from the UK to be slaughtered by Golovkin on Saturday, February 21st in Monte Carlo.

Murray may end up getting smashed to bits by Golovkin, but he’s not going to let him see him sweat before they get to that point by showing fear.

Golovkin looking beyond Murray, wants Lee-Quillin winner or Froch

Final Press Conference(Photo credit: Will Hart/HBO) By Scott Gilfoid: WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovin is facing #1 WBC Martin Murray this Saturday night in Monte Carlo, but already Golovkin is looking past Murray towards bigger fights against the winner of the April 11th fight between WBO middleweight champion Andy Lee and Peter Quillin.

Golovkin also is interested in facing WBA super middleweight champion Carl Froch if he can get him to agree to the fight. In both cases, we’re probably looking at 2016 before any of those fights can take place.

Golovkin arrives in Monte Carlo for Martin Murray fight

golovkin88888(Photo credit: K2 Promotions) By Scott Gilfoid: WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin arrived in Monte Carlo on Monday to get ready for his fight this Saturday night on February 21st against No.1 WBC contender Martin Murray for their fight at the Salle des Etoiles. Unlike some fighters, Golovkin felt that he didn’t need the extra time to get acclimated to being in a new environment.

While some fighters like to arrive two weeks ahead of time for their fights in a different country, Golovkin was fine in arriving just five days ahead of time.

Gennady Golovkin – the latest sensation of a generation

By Matthew Plumridge: Boxing might not be great at many things – but one thing it does do better than any other sport is the ability to hype. Never has a sport been so good at making us think that so many will end up being amongst the chosen few.

To prove this, you only have to consider the current set of undisputed champions; Seth Mitchell at Heavyweight; Julio Cesar Chavez Jr at Middle; and the upcoming battle of the unbeatable Welterweights in Andre Berto and Adrien Broner. For what it is worth, my moneys’ on AB.

Martin Murray will need to be great to beat Gennady Golovkin

murray5By Scott Gilfoid: For #1 WBC Martin Murray (29-1-1, 12 KOs) to have a chance at beating WBA Super World middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (31-0, 28 KOs) next Saturday night on February 21st, Murray will need to be a great fighter, and not merely a good fighter.

We really don’t even know if Murray is a good fighter because he’s never really beaten anyone of note. All we’ve seen is Murray picking up wins against mediocre guys with less than spectacular credentials, such as Domenico Spada and Max Bursak. Those are middle of the road middleweights, and not the kind of guys that would give anyone problems.

Golovkin vs. Murray only one week away for HBO on 2/21

golovkin3255By Scott Gilfoid: Next Saturday night on February 21st, WBA Super World middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (31-0, 28 KOs) will be defending his WBA title against #1 WBC Martin Murray (29-1-1, 12 KOs) on HBO Championship Boxing in Monte Carlo.

Earlier today, Golovkin and Murray both weighed in for their 7-day weights. Golovkin came in at 163 pounds. Murray weighed in five pounds over the middleweight limit at 165 pounds. Golovkin has very little weight to take off for the fight, and he should have no problems.

Is Golovkin overrated?

golovkinBy Niall Kaye: Ever since our sports official inception around the year 1691 and through subsequent centuries, fans have had a voyeuristic obsession with power punchers. Think Jack Dempsey, Ernie Shavers and most notably Tyson, these men were amongst the most exciting, exhilarating and enigmatic figures the sport has seen, and their attraction was impelled exclusively by the devastating power they possessed in their fists.

But there was always a problem with pure power punchers: they are historically one dimensional, and so are beatable. In the case of WBA Super World middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (31-0, 28 KOs), the aforementioned theory stands to be proven. But I must speak directly. I fear this theory will be proven sooner rather than later.

I hope you don’t construe my directness as unkindness, nor bias. Golovkin, is of yet, untested. He is able to emphatically beat fighters who are fearful of his power, who freeze on the night and who are caught up in the hype which he has induced. These fighters have expected to be beaten, and so were dispatched accordingly.

Golovkin vs. Murray: Why is Martin such an underdog?

murray322By Gerardo Granados: On February 21 at the Salle des Etoiles, Monte Carlo in Monaco, the defending WBA – IBO middleweight champion of the world Gennady “GGG” Golovkin W31 (28)-L0-D0 will try to increase his long 18 knockout streak against the favorite son of St Helens City middleweight contender Martin Murray W29 (12)-L1-D1; also, Golovkin aims to increase his winning title defense streak to an outstanding 18 consecutive knockouts.

First of all, Martin Murray took a fight against maybe the second most avoided fighter next to bantamweight king Guillermo Rigondeaux. Let us not forget that for Murray this will be the third time that he gets a shot at a major organization championship and at his last two chances he could have been declared the winner. But why is Murray such an underdog at the betting odds? Is it because we might be overlooking a solid middleweight contender giving him just a minimal chance to win?
