Froch-Kessler II: Carl has only one way of winning this fight

froch45By Scott Gilfoid: There’s been talk of IBF super middleweight champion Carl Froch opting to choose a blend of boxing and slugging to try and beat WBA super middleweight champion Mikkel Kessler in their unification bout next month on May 25th at the O2 Arena in London, UK.

The last time Froch fought Kessler three years ago, Froch attempted to box and slug with Kessler and it failed to work, as Kessler proved to be the much better boxer of the two and was able to out-box Froch from the outside to earn a 12 round unanimous decision victory.

Froch: Ward isn’t entertaining; the Kessler fight is the proper man’s fight

ward56344By Scott Gilfoid: IBF super middleweight champion Carl Froch (30-2, 22 KO’s) doesn’t seem bothered by the fact that he was schooled by Andre Ward in a 12 round decision loss in December 2011. Froch feels that Ward spoiled his way to victory instead of fighting him toe-to-toe in a manner that he feels is manlier.

Froch said to Sky Sports “I’m not worried too much about Andre Ward. He is what he is. He’s not entertaining. You don’ feel like you’ve been in a fight against Andre Ward. The Kessler fight is a proper man’s mano a mano fight. That fight could take place on the cobbles. The boxing public is in for a treat. It’s a fight I need to have, a fight I need to win for me to be able to settle down.”

Froch vs. Kessler II set for May 25th at the O2 Arena in London

kessler32By Scott Gilfoid: The rematch between IBF super middleweight champion Carl Froch (30-2, 22 KO’s) and WBA champion Mikkel Kessler (46-2, 35 KO’s) is now official for May 25th at the O2 Arena (Millenium Dome), London, UK.

Recently there had been talk of the Froch-Kessler 2 fight taking place on April 27th, but that date would have never worked because Froch’s promoter Eddie Hearn wants the fight to be pay per view for the Brits, so the May 25th date gives them more time to market the fight to fans.

We’re still waiting to find out how much the fight will go for on PPV. The likely number will be 15 pounds.

Froch vs. Kessler 2 will be a massive fight

froch454By Thomas Cowan: After yesterday’s announcement by Eddie Hearn, promoter to Carl Froch, that the highly anticipated Brit’s rematch with Mikkel Kessler will be a pay-per-view fight there has been a certain amount of sniggering. Why would people want to pay to see to fighters nearing the end of their careers who have both been dominated by American Andre Ward?

Is a fight between two “Ward losers” going to sell out in the 17,000 capacity 02 arena in London? Frankly, both these questions are ludicrous.

Firstly, the main reason this fight will be a sell out wherever the fight takes place as well as getting thousands of PPV viewers is that the first fight was an epic war. Both warriors went toe-to-toe for 12 rounds of breathtaking action. There was no running away, no time-wasting holding on and endless jabbing to try and bore their way to a decision win. The Brit and the Dane both went for knockout and the fight was by far the most entertaining contest of the otherwise dreary, drawn-out Super Six. Fans will pay to see two great fighters engage in war even if they aren’t the best in the division.

Hearn wants Froch-Kessler II to be PPV

froch33243 - CopyBy Scott Gilfoid: The big contracts that IBF super middleweight champion Carl Froch and WBA champ Mikkel Kessler will be getting for their rematch in May will be fueled in part by pay per view sales in the UK, as it’s reportedly going to be announced soon that British fans will need to pay to see this fight.

Froch’s promoter Eddie Hearn wants the fight to be on PPV, according to the Telegraph, and it looks Sky Box Office will be showing it.

Hearn said to the telegraph.co.uk “The details in their entirety have not been signed yet, but for a fight of huge magnitude, like Froch-Kessler to take place, pay-per-view is a necessity.”

Froch-Kessler 2 = the battle of Ward’s victims

ward56344By Scott Gilfoid: It’s interesting to see all the hype that’s now being done about the May 25th Mikkel Kessler vs. Carl Froch II rematch right now because what we’re really looking at here is a kind of consolation bracket of sorts where the losers from fights against the talented American Andre Ward will now face each other with the chance of getting another fight against Ward for the winner.

Froch was whipped by Ward in December 2011 in the finals of the Super Six tournament, whereas Kessler was totally dominated by Ward in 2009 in an 11th round technical decision win. What’s interesting about Ward’s win over Froch is that Ward did it fighting with a fractured left hand for the entire fight and yet he was still able to school Froch.

Hearn: Froch is a different fighter from the one that Kessler beat in 2010

hearn343By Scott Gilfoid: Eddie Hearn, the promoter for IBF super middleweight champion Carl Froch (30-2, 22 KO’s), thinks Froch has improved since he was beaten by Mikkel Kessler (46-2, 35 KO’s) three years ago in the Super Six tournament in Herning, Denmark.

Froch lost the fight by a 12 round unanimous decision by the scores of 115-113, 116-112 and 117-111. However, Hearn thinks Froch has gotten better in winning four out of his last five fights.

Hearn said as quoted by ringtv “I really feel Carl is a different fighter now, especially in the United Kingdom. These are the kinds of fights and nights that can cement the legacy of Carl Froch.”

Froch-Kessler II waiting approval from IBF

froch457By Scott Gilfoid: The Carl Froch – Mikkel Kessler II rematch has been approved by promoters Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Sport and Sauerland Events. However, it still has to be approved by the International Boxing Federation before it can go ahead.

Hearn has to submit the paper work to them so that Froch can bypass his #1 IBF mandatory challenger Adonis Stevenson. The only reason the IBF will allow Froch to skip the dangerous Stevenson is because this is a unification bout and they give more importance to those types of fights for some reason.

Froch-Kessler II likely to happen in 2013, not this year

Image: Froch-Kessler II likely to happen in 2013, not this yearBy Scott Gilfoid: As I previously mentioned, it looks like the negotiations for the rematch between Carl Froch and Mikkel Kessler aren’t going as smoothly as some boxing fans had hoped for. Froch is still trying to drag Kessler over to Nottingham for the fight, but that may not happen because Kessler says he’d like for the fight to take place in Denmark.
