By Thomas Cowan: After yesterday’s announcement by Eddie Hearn, promoter to Carl Froch, that the highly anticipated Brit’s rematch with Mikkel Kessler will be a pay-per-view fight there has been a certain amount of sniggering. Why would people want to pay to see to fighters nearing the end of their careers who have both been dominated by American Andre Ward?
Is a fight between two “Ward losers” going to sell out in the 17,000 capacity 02 arena in London? Frankly, both these questions are ludicrous.
Firstly, the main reason this fight will be a sell out wherever the fight takes place as well as getting thousands of PPV viewers is that the first fight was an epic war. Both warriors went toe-to-toe for 12 rounds of breathtaking action. There was no running away, no time-wasting holding on and endless jabbing to try and bore their way to a decision win. The Brit and the Dane both went for knockout and the fight was by far the most entertaining contest of the otherwise dreary, drawn-out Super Six. Fans will pay to see two great fighters engage in war even if they aren’t the best in the division.
