Froch says he’ll fight Groves next unless another big fight turns up

froch4534By Scott Gilfoid: It looks like IBF/WBA super middleweight champion Carl Froch (31-2, 22 KO’s) is stuck between a rock and a hard place in terms of having to make a decision about his IBF strap. The International Boxing Federation ordered him to defend his title against his mandatory challenger George Groves (19-0, 15 KO’s), and unless Froch does that he’ll likely be stripped of the IBF strap.

Froch already maneuvered around the previous IBF mandatory Adonis Stevenson to take a second fight against Mikkel Kessler, but now Froch is going to have to face Groves or give up the IBF strap. Froch says he’ll take the fight with Groves unless another big fight falls into his lap. I think what he’s referring to is a third fight against Kessler. Froch has already said he wants that fight.

Froch says Groves is next in line, not sure when fight will take place

froch2 (2)By Scott Gilfoid: IBF/WBA super middleweight champion Carl Froch (31-2, 22 KO’s) gave a confusing interview with BBC Radio 5 today saying that his IBF mandatory challenger George Groves (19-0, 15 KO’s) is the next for him, and then in the next breath Froch starts talking about the fight possibly taking place next year.

That’s exactly next if the fight is taking place next year, is it? I mean, I know Froch’s promoter Eddie Hearn has been excited about wanting to squeeze in another fight for Froch before the end of the year, so where in the heck is Groves in the equation if Froch is talking about the fight possibly taking place next year? Sounds like the IBF may need to do some stripping if Froch chooses to put Groves on hold for another year.

Froch turns 36 today; his promoter talking Groves fight

froch4543By Scott Gilfoid: IBF/WBA super middleweight champion Carl Froch turns 36 today. His promoter Eddie Hearn is talking about possibly matching him up against his new IBF mandatory challenger George Groves. However, it’s still possible Hearn will have both fighters go in different directions instead of facing other before the end of the year.

Hearn said in an interview with Sky Sports “Both fighters have plenty of options…if it makes sense for both fighters neither has a problem with making it happen. We are in talks regarding a potential blockbuster domestic fight later this year.”

That doesn’t mean that Froch and Groves will fight each other. They both could go off in other directions, so that Groves could challenge WBO super middleweight champion Robert Stieglitz, and Froch could fight Mikkel Kessler yet again.

IBF orders Froch to face Groves next

groves45By Scott Gilfoid: If IBF/WBA super middleweight champion Carl Froch (31-2, 22 KO’s) wants to keep his IBF 168 lb. title he’s going to have to face George Groves (19-0, 15 KO’s) next, as the International Boxing Federation ordered today that 35-year-old Froch has to face the 25-year-old Groves next.

If not, then Froch gets stripped of the IBF strap. Froch and Groves must complete an agreement for their fight by July 12th of this month.

IBF chairman Lindsey Tucker said to The Sun “Adonis Stevenson was the mandatory but got tired of waiting for the opportunity to fight Froch and moved up to light-heavyweight to box for the WBC title.

Calzaghe gives Groves a chance to beat Froch

groves4534By Scott Gilfoid: Joe Calzaghe is giving unbeaten super middleweight contender George Groves (19-0, 15 KO’s) a chance of beating IBF/WBA super middleweight champion Carl Froch (31-2, 22 KO’s) if Froch were to ever agree to fight the 25-year-old Groves. Calzaghe thinks Groves could out-box the 35-year-old Froch if he fought smart.

Calzaghe doesn’t understand why Froch jumps on the case of some of the younger fighters that call him out for a fight.

Calzaghe said to Ringside Toe 2 Toe – “I think he [Groves] has a chance of beating Froch if he fights the right tactics…Froch can be out-boxed.

Hearn: Groves will have to wait until next year to fight Froch

groves43132By Scott Gilfoid: If George Groves (19-0, 15 KO’s) really has his heart set on a fight against IBF/WBA super middleweight champion Carl Froch (31-2, 22 KO’s) then he’s going to have to wait until next year in the summer, says Froch’s promoter Eddie Hearn.

He wants to match Froch up against someone else this winter, probably Mikkel Kessler again, and then look to make the Froch-Groves fight next year in the summer time in an outdoor stadium. Hearn figures that Groves should have a world title in his possession by that time, making a Groves-Froch fight even bigger.
