By Jim Dower: Eleider Alvarez is planning his first title defense of his newly won WBO light heavyweight title that he captured last Saturday night in stopping Sergey Kovalev in the 7th round. Alvarez (24-0, 12 KOs) is waiting to see if Kovalev exercises his rematch clause in his contract that he had for last Saturday’s fight.

Eleider Álvarez is the new WBO\IBA Light Heavyweight Champion, defeating Sergey Kovalev by technical knockout.
By Dan Ambrose: Sergey ‘Krusher’ Kovalev’s promoter Kathy Duva states that he had a rematch clause in his contract for his fight last night against voluntary challenger Eleider Alvarez, who stopped him in the 7th round at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
In a stunning turnaround, Eleider Alvarez (24-0, 12 KOs) of Montreal, Canada scored a seventh round knockout victory over Sergey “Krusher” Kovalev (32-3-1, 28 KOs) of Russia before a sellout crowd of 5,642 fans at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino’s Etess Arena. Alvarez now becomes the WBO and IBA World Light Heavyweight Champion.
By Eric Thomas: In a shocking upset, Eleider Alvarez (24-0, 12 KOs) destroyed World Boxing Organization light heavyweight belt holder Sergey ‘Krusher’ Kovalev (32-3, 28 KOs) by a 7th round knockout on Saturday night to claim the WBO title on HBO from the Hard Rock Hotel in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Kovalev was knocked down three times in the seventh. For a fighter that was once considered the best light heavyweight in the division, it was a sad way for the ‘Krusher’ Kovalev to lose.

Kovalev (32-2-1m 28 KOs) weighed in at 174 pounds. His opponent 34-year-old Alvarez (23-0, 11 KOs) weighed in at 174.4 pounds.
