Miguel Cotto: A great champion

By Thomas David Drury: February 9 2008 was the first time that boxers from Puerto Rico had held three of the four major welter-weight titles, WBA, IBF, WBO, when Carlos Quintana defeated Paul Williams to join Miguel Cotto and Kermit Cintron as champions in the division. Puerto Rican fighter’s have achieved numerous feats which include Wilfredo Gomez’s record for most defences in the super bantamweight division and for most successive knockouts by a title holder. Daniel Jimenez set a world record for quickest knockout in a championship fight, knocking out Herald Geier in 17 seconds (3/9/1994).

Cotto and the junior middleweight division

By Luis Berrios: Miguel Cotto the proud fighter from Puerto Rico, now a junior middleweight, people are asking “why Cotto hasn’t fight any of the best from the middleweight division?” the reason is simple, he is adapting to this weight class. Cotto moved last year to the junior middleweight division, after the Manny Pacquiao fight. What Miguel is trying to do is fight his way back to the top to get another fight against Pacquiao.

Will Cotto ever fight Lara, Angulo, Williams or Martinez?

By Dan Ambrose: Since Miguel Cotto (36-2, 29 KO’s) moved up to the junior middleweight division last year in June, Cotto has faced two less than dangerous fighters in WBA junior middleweight champion Yuri Foreman and 38-year-old Ricardo Mayorga. Cotto won those fights and some boxing fans are under the impression that Cotto is back, and that he’s a changed fighter after suffering bad beatings in defeats to Antonio Margarito and Manny Pacquiao. How people can think that based on Cotto’s less than impressive opposition in his last two fights is beyond me.

Steward sees Cotto fighting Margarito, Chavez Jr. and then Pacquiao

By Dan Ambrose: If trainer Emanuel Steward has his way his fighter WBA junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (36-2, 29 KO’s) will fight Antonio Margarito next in a rematch in July, then Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and finally a rematch with Manny Pacquiao. I hate the thought of Cotto fighting Pacquiao again without Cotto fighting someone really good that can truly test him.

Does Margarito deserve another shot against Cotto?

Image: Does Margarito deserve another shot against Cotto?By William Mackay: I don’t like the idea of 33-year-old Antonio Margarito (38-7, 27 KO’s) being given an immediate title shot against WBA junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto with Margarito coming off of a brutal 12 round decision loss to Manny Pacquiao last November. For one, I don’t like the idea of fighters that once were fighting well being given a title shot when they just got whipped. They seems so wrong to let someone fight for a title right after they’ve been soundly beaten.

Cotto changes his mind about Margarito bout

By Dan Ambrose: WBA junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto has suddenly changed his mind about fighting Antonio Margarito in the summer. Cotto was previously entertaining the idea of fighting Sergio Martinez next or at least waiting until he heard how big of an offer he could get for this fight. Now Cotto has changed his mind and will be going ahead with the Margarito rematch in the summer as his promoter Bob Arum wishes for him.

It wasn’t the plaster that beat Cotto

by Robert “Big Moe” Elmore: First, I want to congratulate Miguel Cotto on his title defense over Ricardo Mayorga. Although the prediction of a 4th round stoppage was wrong, none the less it was a good fight. But before this fight took place, there had been an out cry of a rematch with Antonio Margarito. Margarito stopped Cotto in their 2008 battle bloodying his face along the way. I watched the fight one time and then I watched it again. And I can honestly say that the possible of plaster in Margarito’s gloves made no major difference in the fight. So rather than drag this thing out let me cut right to the chase.

Cotto-Margarito II on July 16th

Image: Cotto-Margarito II on July 16thBy Dan Ambrose: The long awaited rematch between Miguel Cotto (35-2, 28 KO’s) and Antonio Margarito (38-7, 27 KO’s) will be happening on July 16th, according to Steve Kim at Maxboxing.com. This is provided that Cotto wins his fight next month against Ricardo Mayorga, and that’s a big if, because Cotto is a fighter that can be beaten on any given night if things aren’t working out for him.
