Canelo: Miguel Cotto fight could happen in September

canelo565By Dan Ambrose: Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (44-1-1, 31 KOs) says he expects to get a title shot against WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (39-4, 32 KOs) later this year in September. If it doesn’t happen then, Canelo sees the fight happening at some point in the future. He sees the fight as inevitable.

Canelo doesn’t have much to worry about because Cotto definitely will be facing him this year after the two of them get through with their next fights. Cotto faces former IBF/WBA middleweight champion Daniel Geale (31-3, 16 KOs) on June 6th at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Cotto vs. Canelo a done deal for Fall if both win next fights?

canelo6900000By Dan Ambrose: WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (39-4, 32 KOs) will be facing former WBA/WBC junior middleweight champ Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (44-1-1, 31 KOs) in a fight that will take place in the Fall if both guys get past their next opponents beforehand, according to Dan Rafael of ESPN.com. This still hasn’t been confirmed by either Cotto or Canelo though, so you have to take this boxing news with a grain of salt.

It’s unclear though if Cotto will still be in possession of his WBC 160 pound title or not. That’ll be up to the World Boxing Council, who previously said that Cotto will need to face his WBC mandatory challenger Gennady Golovkin after Cotto’s next voluntary defense.

De La Hoya: Canelo vs. Cotto fight can still happen

canelo132By Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions president Oscar De La Hoya isn’t concerned that a fight between WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (39-4, 32 KOs) and De La Hoya’s fighter Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (44-1-1, 31 KOs) can still take place despite Cotto recently signing a multi-year deal with Roc Nation Sports.

De La Hoya doesn’t see the signing as being an obstacle to the Cotto-Canelo fight getting made this year after Canelo gets done with his fight against James Kirkland on May 9th, and Cotto finishes up with his June 6th fight, which is rumored to be against 41-year-old Cornelius Bundrage.

Cotto’s adviser: Canelo fight didn’t happen due to financial side

cotto6788By Dan Ambrose: If you wonder why the Saul “Canelo” Alvarez vs. Miguel Cotto fight negotiations broke down it’s because Cotto’s management weren’t happy with the financial side. In other words, the money wasn’t right for the fight.

Canelo, 24, officially pulled out of the negotiations earlier today after Cotto and his adviser Gabby Penagaricano chose not to accept the offer made by Golden Boy Promotions. It’s unknown what the money split offer was by Golden Boy, but you can bet that it wasn’t far enough in Cotto’s direction for him to take the fight.

De La Hoya: Cotto-Canelo is off the table, 5th deadline missed by Cotto

canelo6767By Dan Ambrose: It looks like the fight between WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (39-4, 32 KOs) and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (44-1-1, 31 KOs) has finally officially bit the dust.

Golden Boy Promotions president Oscar De La Hoya is saying that the Cotto-Canelo fight is now off the table due to the 34-year-old Cotto having missed a 5th deadline to make the fight happen, according to Dan Rafael of ESPN.

“Oscar just told me no Cotto-Canelo. ‘The deal is off the table.’ Said Cotto went past 5th deadline last night. #boxing,” Rafael said on his twitter.

This comes to no surprise because the 24-year-old Canelo already gave De La Hoya his marching orders this week that he’s tired of waiting for Cotto to sign the contract for their bout, and that he wants De La Hoya to find him another opponent to fight.

Cotto-Canelo will need to move off May 2nd date for Mayweather vs. Pacquiao

canelo7344By Dan Ambrose: Manny Pacquiao’s positive news on Sunday about his fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr likely to be ready to be announced by the end of this month means that Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Miguel Cotto will need to get ready to move off the May 2nd fight date that Mayweather wants for the Pacquiao fight date.

The Mayweather-Pacquiao fight is said to be taking place on May 2nd at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. That fight obviously is a much bigger match-up then the Cotto-Canelo fight. There’s no comparison at all between them.

Cotto vs. Canelo possible for June 6th or 13th in New York

canelo63By Dan Ambrose: The mega-fight between WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (39-4, 32 KOs) and former WBA/WBC 154lb champ Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (44-1-1, 31 KOs) could be taking place on June 6th or 13th in New York rather than on May 2nd like the 24-year-old Canelo wants.

Cotto’s legal adviser Gabriel Peñagarícano told ESPN.com.ar that the Cotto-Canelo fight would wind up in New York in June. Having the fight take place in April, the Cotto vs. Canelo fight would be able to beat the Floyd Mayweather Jr vs. Manny Pacquiao fight.

Canelo needs the Cotto fight, says Sulaiman

canelo846By Dan Ambrose: With three disappointing fights against Floyd Mayweather Jr, Erislandy Lara and Austin Trout, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (44-1-1, 31 KOs) is no longer looking like the guy that will be able to carry the baton for Manny Pacquiao and Mayweather when they retire from the spot.

More and more, Canelo is looking like a fighter who was more hype than substance. Perhaps for that reason, World Boxing Council president Mauricio Sulaiman feels that the 24-year-old Canelo badly needs the fight against WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto right now.

Roach: The Mayweather fight will always be there for Cotto

roach013By Dan Ambrose: Trainer Freddie Roach prefers having his fighter WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto face Saul “Canelo” Alvarez right now rather than having him step inside the ring to face Floyd Mayweather Jr for a second time.

It’s not that Roach doesn’t want Cotto to face Mayweather again, because he definitely does. He just doesn’t want him to fight him right now. Roach feels that Cotto can beat Mayweather now that he’s training him and giving him his training advice.

Cotto beats Canelo, says Robert Garcia

cotto552By Dan Ambrose: By Dan Ambrose: Trainer Robert Garcia thinks that WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto is fighting at a really high level now with the help of his trainer Freddie Roach. Cotto has a potential fight against Mexico’s young star Saul “Canelo” Alvarez if the fight can get put together.

Cotto appears to be waiting right now to see what happens with the Floyd Mayweather Jr vs. Manny Pacquiao negotiations, because he could very well be the plan-B for Mayweather if Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum asks for too much money for the fight.
