Chavez Sr. needs to let Julio Jr. sink or swim without advice

Image: Chavez Sr. needs to let Julio Jr. sink or swim without adviceBy Dan Ambrose: If you had the chance to see the Julio Cesar Chavez Jr-Sergio Martinez 24/7 episodes on HBO as well as the Chavez Jr. vs. Martinez fight itself on September 15th last month], you’ll have no doubt observed that Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. spent a lot of time trying to help his son Chavez Jr. out by giving him expert advice on the things that he had spotted in Martinez’s game that he felt that Chavez Jr. could exploit.

In hindsight the things that Chavez Sr. said were dead on correct, such as backing Martinez up with combinations and then getting out. But Chavez Jr. often looked bored and disinterested in the advice that was given to him by his dad. It looked as if Chavez Jr. didn’t really welcome his father telling him things and that he seemed to want to do it his own way.

Chavez Jr. marijuana excuse troubling

Image: Chavez Jr. marijuana excuse troublingBy John F. McKenna (McJack): In another case of a boxer claiming not to know what he was doing was illegal, former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (46-1-1, 32 KO’s) now claims that the reason he tested positive for marijuana is that he drank the substance in his tea. Julio, the son of the Mexican superstar of the same name tested positive for marijuana in his system after losing his WBC title belt to new champion Sergio Martinez.

It is particularly troubling that Julio waited three weeks to come up with the excuse that he drank the marijuana in his tea because of insomnia and to help settle his nerves. Chavez also claims that he never smoked marijuana and checked with a doctor before drinking the marijuana laced tea. It’s almost as bad as “The dog ate my homework” excuse we used as children when we failed to complete our school assignments. The teachers of course did not believe us then and it is doubtful that very many boxing observers take Julio’s excuse seriously now.

What made the win even more impressive for Martinez was how he fought back despite being badly hurt in the 12th round by Chavez Jr.

Chavez Jr: I never smoked marijuana, I used it with tea

Image: Chavez Jr: I never smoked marijuana, I used it with teaBy Dan Ambrose: Former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. is claiming that he never smoked marijuana before, and that his positive test results for the drug from his last fight against Sergio Martinez last month was due to marijuana that Chavez Jr. had drank with tea aver speaking with a medical doctor to treat his nerves.

Chavez Jr. said to the Record.com.mx “In California it is legal cannabis (marijuana), so I was told, it would help me sleep and relax, and when I checked with the doctor told me that the only problem was the smoke, so I made a tea or few drops … and that’s what I took, but I have never smoked marijuana…I have problems with nerves…I am not a drug addict.”

Roach still unhappy with how Chavez Jr. ran the training camp

Image: Roach still unhappy with how Chavez Jr. ran the training campBy Dan Ambrose: Trainer Freddie Roach still can’t seem to forget about how his fighter former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. controlled his recent training camp with Roach, insisting on some workouts being in the living room of his rented home, skipping training sessions and having training done late at night. Roach doesn’t understand why Chavez Jr. did this for the most important fight of his career against Sergio Martinez and not for his previous fights against weaker opposition.

In an interview at Maxboxing.com, Roach said “Basically, we were powerless. [Chavez Jr.] wanted to be the boss and we [I] kinda let the fighter get away with it. So it’s a little bit our [my] fault for letting him get away with it.”

Chavez Jr. will have problems against Martinez in rematch if he fights over 180 lbs

Image: Chavez Jr. will have problems against Martinez in rematch if he fights over 180 lbsBy Dan Ambrose: Former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (46-1-1, 32 KO’s) probably is wasting his time by fighting WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (50-2-2, 28 KO’s), because the only thing that Chavez Jr. will get out of facing Martinez a second time is a nice payday. Chavez Jr. will not beat Martinez next year or the year after, not if Chavez Jr. continues to rehydrate up to 180+ to fight him.

That’s much too big to defeat a quick-footed fighter like Martinez. That’s a small cruiserweight trying to beat a quick middleweight. It’s not going to happen. Cruiserweights are slow and not nearly as fast as middleweights. But Chavez Jr. isn’t like a real cruiserweight, because a real cruiserweight isn’t losing 20 pounds to fight in the cruiserweight division, at least not the good ones. If they’re weighing 220 lbs, they’re going to fight at heavyweight where the money is a lot better.

Chavez Jr: I’m going to KO Sergio Martinez in the rematch

Image: Chavez Jr: I'm going to KO Sergio Martinez in the rematchBy Dan Ambrose: Having failed badly in in getting a win over Sergio Martinez (50-2-2, 28 KO’s) in their fight last month on September 15th, former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (46-1-1, 32 KO’s) is now promising to KO Martinez in their possible rematch next year if Chavez Jr. isn’t suspended for an entire year for his positive marijuana test.

Chavez Jr. said this as quoted by Infobae.com I’m sure I’ll knock Martinez out in the rematch. I let him go.”

I think a more accurate statement would be that Chavez Jr. wasn’t accurate enough with his punches to finish Martinez off. However, even if Chavez Jr. had landed the remaining shots that he threw in the 12th round, I still think Martinez would have survived the round because he was throwing back well and moving to avoid Chavez Jr’s desperate shots after he got back up and cleared his head.

Image: Chavez Jr. still the first choice for Sergio Martinez's next fightBy Dan Ambrose: Sampson Lewkowicz, the manager for WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (50-2-2, 28 KO’s), says that former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (46-1-1, 32 KO’s) is still the leading candidate for the 37-year-old Martinez’s next fight in 2013 despite the wait that might be involved in getting to that fight. The 26-year-old Chavez Jr. is facing a suspension for testing positive for marijuana in his last fight agaisnt Martinez on September 15th.

Lewkowicz is kicking around the idea of trying to state the Chavez Jr-Martinez II fight in Argentina rather than the United States. Martinez comes from Argentina and has a a lot of fans there that he could potentially count on filling a stadium to see him fight Chavez Jr. again.
