Trout to Golden Boy: Have faith in Canelo; let him fight me

alvarez452By Dan Ambrose: WBA World junior middleweight champion Austin Trout wants to fight Golden Boy’s star in the making WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, but he thinks there’s some doubt in the minds of Golden Boy whether they should let the young 22-year-old Alvarez face the 27-year-old defensive artist Trout.

After all, Canelo, who Trout refers to as Golden Boy’s “Golden Goose,” hasn’t laid the golden eggs for Golden Boy yet by fighting Floyd Mayweather Jr. or any of the other top fighters. Instead of laying golden eggs, Canelo has been beating a lot of smaller and older fighters.

Trout commented on his twitter “I personally don’t believe that Canelo is ducking me. I do believe that [Richard] Schaefer [the CEO of Golden Boy] and Golden Boy is though. Have faith in your boy, GB.”

Canelo vs. Trout is a bad match-up for Golden Boy

alvarez1By Dan Ambrose: WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo”Alvarez said yesterday that he’ll most likely be facing WBA junior middleweight champion Austin Trout on the undercard of Floyd Mayweather Jr’s next fight on May 4th in Las Vegas, as long as Mayweather signs a contract to face him in September.

The Canelo-Trout fight is a potential nightmare for Golden Boy Promotions, Canelo’s promoters, because Trout is a highly skilled fighter who specializes in making his opponents miss and then hitting them with counter shots. Canelo could lose this fight and put Golden Boy Promotions in the situation where a beaten Canelo would then be fighting Mayweather in September.

Canelo: I’ll fight Trout on May 4th if Mayweather will fight me in September

canelo1By Dan Ambrose: WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (41-0-1, 30 KO’s) is poised to agree to fight on the Floyd Mayweather Jr. HBO pay per view undercard on May 4th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada, provided Mayweather agrees to fight him in September.

Canelo told the record.com.mx “If you do not sign to face me in September, I promise not to fight on May 4th…I do not need to be co-feature for Floyd Mayweather, but we must do our part…It’s almost certainly going to be against him [Trout on May 4th]. I’m just waiting to confirm that we have signed two [Mayweather and Trout.”

Will Canelo still get the Mayweather fight if he loses to Trout?

alvarez56By Allan Fox: There’s a possibility WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez will be fighting on May 4th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. According to reports, Canelo will on the card if he can get Mayweather Jr. in September. Canelo could end up fighting WBA junior middleweight champion Austin Trout, and then moving forward to fight Mayweather on September 14th.

So the deal would be that Canelo fights on the May 4th card then he gets the Mayweather fight in return. What’s not known is whether Canelo would still get the Mayweather fight in September even if he gets beaten by Trout or whoever Golden Boy Promotions digs up for him to fight on that date.

Austin Trout: I haven’t been contacted for Saul Alvarez fight

trout35By Dan Ambrose: In a sign that Golden Boy Promotions might be looking elsewhere for easier marks for their Golden One, WBA World junior middleweight Austin Trout (26-0, 14 KO’s) says he hasn’t even been contacted by the promoters of WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (41-0-1, 30 KO’s) for a fight on May 4th. Trout says he’s hoping they’ll contact him about the fight but he’s not going to just sit around waiting.

Trout said to ESPN.com “You’re going to have to ask Oscar De La Hoya and Canelo because Team Trout is ready and waiting on the call to say Canelo is ready to do it as well. If it doesn’t happen, we’re not going to wait though. Sooner or later he [Canelo] is going to have to fight me. I’m a champion. I’m going to take the other belts that are not his belt, and there will be nothing left to do but to get in and fight.

Will boxing fans respect Saul Alvarez if he ducks Austin Trout?

canelo45By Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions has done a good job of building up red-headed WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez by making the right fights for him at the right time in his career. In other words, Canelo hasn’t been put in with the best at 154, such as Erislandy Lara, Austin Trout, and Vanes Martirosyan.

In fact, Canelo has only been in with one legit 154 pound fighter in Ryan Rhodes, and that guy was at the end of his career. Boxing fans want to see Canelo step it up against a guy from his own division in WBA junior middleweight champion Austin Trout, but that might not happen for reasons that are still unknown.

Schaefer doesn’t see Canelo vs. Trout taking place

trout45By Dan Ambrose: Despite WBA junior middleweight champion Austin Trout’s comments that a fight between him and WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez is close to being made for May 4th. Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer, the promoter for Alvarez, says he doubts that fight will take place. He does say that Trout is one of the options that he’s considering for Alvarez’s next fight date, but it’s still not likely.

Sports Illustrated writer Chris Mannix said on his twitter “Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer tells SI that NoDoubtsTrout is ‘being considered’ for Canelo but ‘at this point, don’t think it will happen.’”

Trout replied to the twitter, saying “There you go y’all kill all that excitement.”

Saul Alvarez is tailor-made for Austin Trout

alvarez45By Dan Ambrose: WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (41-0-1, 30 KO’s) is a decent champion and he’s done a great job of beating the welterweights that Golden Boy Promotions has lined him up with for him to win the World Boxing Council 154 pound title and hold onto it for an entire year, but if Golden Boy goes ahead and matches him up against WBA World junior middleweight champion Austin Trout (26-0, 14 KO’s) on May 4th, then I see Alvarez losing badly and getting exposed in the process. Alvarez is too flat-footed, slow and stamina-plagued to beat a fighter in Trout’s class.

Alvarez, 22, is kind of in a bad position right now to where he kind of has to fight Trout to avoid looking bad in the eyes of boxing fans. The plan was that he was supposed to fight the winner of the Miguel Cotto vs. Trout battle, at least that’s what the idea was.

Austin Trout still waiting to see if Canelo will fight him on May 4th

trout8By Dan Ambrose: WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (41-0, 30 KO’s) has already been confirmed for the May 4th undercard of the Floyd Mayweather Jr. fight at the MGM Grand, in Las Vegas, Nevada. We’re still waiting to find out who the 22-year-old Canelo will be fighting on that date. WBA World junior middleweight champion Austin Trout (26-0, 14 KO’s) is hoping that Canelo and his promoters at Golden Boy will select him to face Canelo on this date. However, Trout says nothing is official yet whether he’ll get the fight, according to RingTV.

Canelo told RingTV that there can’t be any talks with Golden Boy about a fight with Alvarez until he finds out whether Miguel Cotto will choose to fight him again to try and avenge his loss to Trout from December 1st of this month. Cotto had a rematch clause in the contract for that fight and it runs out on January 14th or 15th. If Cotto doesn’t choose to use it, then Trout will be available to fight Alvarez.
