Trout: Canelo won’t have his usual size advantage; let’s see how he deals with it

trout333By Dan Ambrose: WBA junior middleweight champion Austin Trout (26-0, 14 KO’s) correctly points out that WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (41-0-1, 30 KO’s) won’t have a size advantage over him in their fight next month on April 20th like Canelo has typically enjoyed for pretty much all of his career.

There have been some exceptions now and then where Canelo wasn’t the taller fighter like in his bout with a past his best 5’11” Kermit Cintron in November 2011, but mostly it’s been Canelo fighting lighter and/or shorter guys than him.

Trout: I already beat Canelo’s brother; now it’s his turn

111(Photo credit: Leopoldo Gonzalez) By Dan Ambrose: WBA junior middleweight champion Austin Trout (26-0, 14 KO’s) will be looking to go 2 for 2 when he faces WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (41-0-1, 30 KO’s) on April 20th at the Alamodome, in San Antonio, Texas, USA.

Trout already beat Canelo’s brother Rigoberto Alvarez by a lopsided 12 round unanimous decision two years ago in February 2011, and now Trout is going to beat the younger Alvarez in Canelo next month to wipe out the last remaining fighter from the family.

Trout said at the latest press conference “I have already defeated his brother [Rigoberto] and taken his belt, and I plan on making it two for two against the Alvarez’s in my quest to be the best. I have no doubt I’ll retain my title and take his with me.”

It’s true that Trout certainly did beat Canelo’s brother two years ago in one of Trout’s easiest fights.

Canelo wants Mayweather, Maravilla or Cotto in September, says trainer

alvarez1By Dan Ambrose: WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez’s trainer Chepo Reynoso says they’re still targeting Floyd Mayweather Jr. for September 14th despite Mayweather choosing not to face Canelo on May 4th.

Canelo will have to beat WBA junior middleweight champion Austin Trout (26-0, 14 KO’s) next month on April 20th, of course, for Canelo to move forward for a bout against Mayweather. If Canelo can’t get Mayweather, then he wants to face former WBA junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto or WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez.

Canelo: I know how to fight Trout

alvarez45By Dan Ambrose: WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (41-0-1, 30 KO’s) says he’s done his research on WBA junior middleweight champion Austin Trout (26-0, 14 KO’s) by watching his fights, and he figures he knows enough to beat him when they face each other on April 20th at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.

Canelo said to RingTV “He [Trout] knows to hold you. He’s a southpaw and he has a lot of tricks. But I’ve been working on those things…I’ve been ringside and seen him fight a few times, in person, so I know how to fight him.”

Nelson: Canelo makes too many mistakes; Trout will beat him

canelo11By Dan Ambrose: Junior middleweight contender Willie Nelson, #5 WBC, says he sees WBA junior middleweight champion Austin Trout (26-0, 14 KO’s) out-boxing WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (41-0-1, 30 KO’s) next month in their fight on April 20th. Nelson believes that Trout is just too skilled for the mistake-prone Canelo, and he’s predicting that Trout will win this fight by a 12 round decision.

Speaking with thaboxingvoice.com, Nelson said “I don’t think too much of Canelo. He’s a young fighter; he has lots, lots and lots of bad habits that he makes in the ring. I see Austin Trout winning a 12 round decision.”

De La Hoya: I’m going to spar with Canelo for Trout fight

dela hoya324By Dan Ambrose: In a show of support for his young red-haired star, Golden Boy Promotions president Oscar De La Hoya says he’s going to spar with WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (41-0-1, 30 Ko’s) to get him ready for his unification clash against WBA junior middleweight champion Austin Trout (26-0, 14 KO’s) on April 20th at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.

De La Hoya said on his social media site, “For Canelo’s fight against the Dangerous Trout, I’m going to spar with Saul. I’ll send video soon. Let’s go San Antonio.”

De La Hoya must really worried for Canelo if he’s volunteering to do some sparring with him because a loss for who Trout calls Golden Boy’s Golden Goose [Canelo] would be disastrous in terms of slowing down Canelo’s progress into turning into a pay-per-view star along the lines of Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao.

Canelo to use left hooks to try and beat Trout on April 20th

canelo56By Dan Ambrose: WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (41-0-1, 30 KO’s), who WBA champion Austin Trout (26-0, 14 KO’s) sees as a slightly larger version of Miguel Cotto, plans on using some of Cotto’s ideas to try and beat Trout in their fight on April 20th at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.

Specifically, Canelo thinks Trout is vulnerable to left hooks because Cotto was able to land those kinds of shots from time to time early in the fight before Trout adapted to what he was doing and dominated him badly for the last six rounds of the fight.

Canelo said to RingTV “I think it’s [throwing left hook’s] going to be one of the main points as I train for this fight.

Trout: I want Mayweather after I beat Canelo

trout5423By Dan Ambrose: WBA World junior middleweight champion Austin Trout (26-0, 14 KO’s) wants to be next in line to face unbeaten Floyd Mayweather Jr. on Showtime/CBS if or when Trout beats the highly hyped but untested Golden Boy promoted WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (41-0-1, 30 KO’s) on April 20th in San Antonio, Texas.

Trout said to Fighthype.com “I know he’s [Mayweather] got a six-fight deal, and I would love to land on one of those spots. If he wants to make me wait, I’m not opposed to taking on other champions, the people with the belts [at junior middleweight].”

Canelo wants Cotto, Sergio Martinez or Angulo in September if he beats Trout

alvarez4343By Dan Ambrose: WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (41-0-1, 30 KO’s) already has several opponents in mind that he’d like to face on September 14th provided that he gets past WBA junior middleweight champion Austin Trout (26-0, 14 KO’s). Canelo his next fight will be his first pay-per-view bout that he headlines, and he doesn’t care that Floyd Mayweather Jr. has already picked out September 14th well ahead of time. Canelo says he’s still going to fight that day.

Canelo said to RingTV “I can fight Miguel Cotto, I can fight Sergio “Maravilla” Martinez…Maybe even [Alfredo] Angulo.”

Cotto and Angulo are obvious choices for Canelo, but if he picks out Sergio Martinez then he’s going to take a beating and likely end up looking much worse than former WBC junior middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. did in getting beaten by Martinez last September.
