Lederman: Canelo is going to destroy Trout on April 20th

alvarez4532By Dan Ambrose: Harold Lederman, HBO’s unofficial ringside scorer, believes that WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (41-0-1, 31 KO’s) will make easy work of WBA junior middleweight champion Austin Trout (26-0, 14 KO’s).

Lederman thinks the 22-year-old Canelo will be too strong for the more experienced and arguably more talented Trout in their fight at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas. It doesn’t matter that Canelo has never beaten anyone that you could call remotely good or that he’s looked flat-footed and one-paced in many of his fights. Lederman still thinks Canelo will win.

Trout: Canelo is going to be an easy fight for me

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERABy Dan Ambrose: WBA World junior middleweight champion Austin Trout (26-0, 14 KO’s) is putting in hard workouts in his sparring sessions to get ready for his April 20th unification bout against WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (41-0-1, 30 KO’s) at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.

Trout already saw Canelo’s fighting style as one that he could easily negate, but with his recent sparring sessions against fighters with the same style as Canelo, Trout is even more certain that he’ll have an easy time dominating the orange-haired Canelo on April 20th.

Canelo-Trout 30-day weigh-in: 166.5 lbs.

Web-P3142364By Dan Ambrose: WBA junior middleweight champion Austin Trout (26-0, 14 KO’s) weighed in today for his 30-day weigh-in at 166.5, a mere 12.5 pounds over the 154 pound weight limit for his April 20th fight against WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (41-0-1, 30 KO’s). Canelo weighed in at exactly the same weight at 166.5.

Trout, 27, will likely hold his weight around the mid-160 region, as he’ll have no problem stripping down 10 to 12 pounds of water weight when it comes time to dehydrate the week of his fight with Canelo at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.

Trout, 5’10”, is a big junior middleweight, but he’s very agile for the weight that he carries. He’s not like a tank with the weight carries. He’s able to glide around the ring effortlessly to shoot out his jab, right hook and left hand.

Merchant: I won’t be surprised if Canelo loses to Trout

Web-P3142309By Dan Ambrose: Former HBO analyst Larry Merchant says he wouldn’t be surprised in the least if WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (41-0-1, 30 KO’s) gets beaten next month by WBA champion Austin Trout (26-0, 14 KO’s) on April 20th in their Texas based fight.

Merchant understands fully why Canelo’s promoters at Golden Boy Promotions were dead set against putting their fighter in with Trout because he’s a clever boxer and there’s a good chance that Canelo ends up getting beaten in this fight.

Merchant said to esnewsreporting.com “I like Canelo…It’s a dangerous fight, and if he lost it wouldn’t be the biggest shock in the world.”

The Mexican Style of Boxing: Canelo Alvarez

Web-P3142506By Hector Gonzalez: To discredit Mexican Boxers or their style of fighting is like chopping off a whole part of a body. Boxing’s rich history has depended on Mexican fighters for over 100 years, in that time providing a rich and aesthetically pleasing style of fighting. Most Mexican boxers are described as boxer-punchers, some of them are extremely technical while some unorthodox.

While the many styles that come from Mexico vary there is one thing that stand out in Mexican fighting, it tents to be a very proud style of fighting often leading to dramatic fights.

It’s been interesting reading some of the build up to Alvarez vs. Trout. I see many fans commenting on Alvarez’s style making references to Alvarez’s Mexican style of fighting, calling him a ‘brawler’, and how a technician like Trout will dismantle the Mexican body puncher.

Why do some of Canelo’s fans have a hard time accepting that he may lose to Trout?

Web-P3142517By Dan Ambrose: I’ve noticed that when you discuss the possibility of WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (41-0-1, 30 KO’s) losing his April 20th fight against WBA junior middleweight champion Austin Trout (26-0, 14 KO’s) Austin Trout, some of Canelo’s fans start to lash out and name call. Is it because Canelo has orange hair that his fans react some bitterly?

It’s hard to understand what makes Canelo’s loyal fan base get testy when you point out he’s in trouble in the Trout bout. It’s better to tell the truth about Canelo than to build him up based on nothing. You don’t see this when other Mexican fighters are critiqued like Juan Manuel Marquez, and it makes you wonder what exactly it is about the red-haired Canelo that causes some of his fans to want to insult when you point out the possibility that he may lose and lose badly to Trout in this fight.

Trout capable of out-boxing Canelo for long stretches

SanAntonio_0U9C2337_send(Photo: Stephanie Trapp/SHOWTIME) By Dan Ambrose: WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (41-0-1, 30 KO’s) really is in a situation where he’s going to need to KO WBA junior middleweight champion Austin Trout (26-0, 14 KO’s) on April 20th if he wants to get the win without controversy because he simply doesn’t have the boxing skills to beat Trout by a 12 round decision at the Alamodome, in San Antonio, Texas, USA.

If this was a three-round fight, then I’d give Canelo a good chance of winning because he could turn it into one of those Prizefighter type of fights where the most aggressive guy for three rounds wins the fight. But this isn’t a three round fight; it’s for 12 rounds, and Canelo will need boxing skills in order for him to be able to win a decision over Trout unless he’s somehow able to KO him. I don’t see that happening.

Canelo doesn’t look confident for Trout fight

austin1(Photos: Stephanie Trapp/SHOWTIME) By Dan Ambrose: In comparing the face-offs of WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (41-0-1, 30 KO’s) with WBA junior middleweight Austin Trout (26-0, 14 KO’s) to how Canelo usually looks when he’s facing an over-matched opponent, I’ve noticed that he doesn’t look at all cocky and smug this time around compared to his past fights.

If anything, I think Canelo seems worried and possibly afraid for what may happen when he meets Trout in the ring on April 20th at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas. It’s like night and day watching Canelo’s face-offs with Josesito Lopez, Shane Mosley, Matthew Hatton and Kertmit Contron, to name just a small handful of his over-matched opposition Golden Boy has fed him in the past two years.

Canelo looked absolutely cocky in those face-offs, like he just knew he was going to win those fights easily.

12K tickets sold for Canelo vs. Trout on 1st day

McAllen_0U9C3732_send(Photos: Stephanie Trapp/SHOWTIME) By Dan Ambrose: Over 12 thousand tickets were sold on the first day after being put on sale for the April 20th unification clash between WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (41-0-1, 30 KO’s) and WBA champion Austin Trout (26-0, 14 KO’s).

Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer told ESPN the 12 thousand tickets have been sold for the fight that will take place for the 72,000 seat stadium at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas, but the stadium has been scaled back to hold only 30,000. In other words, Golden Boy and Canelo are making the tickets extra cheap just to sell out less than half of the stadium.

So what does that tell you about Canelo’s popularity if Golden Boy is dropping the prices at a bargain basement price for the fight? I don’t know, but I think it gives a good indication that Canelo isn’t popular enough at this time to draw huge amounts of boxing fans if the fight were to take place with regular priced tickets.

Trout vs. Canelo: Why isn’t Austin the favorite?

trout111By Jamie Hesford: Ever since the Saul “Canelo” Alvarez vs. Austin Trout fight was rumored I had my doubts that this fight would be made, even more so when the complications arose. My primary concern being that Canelo has been making himself known by fighting well known but faded boxers. Names such as Shane Mosley and Kermit Cintron.

He failed to stop Mosley and never appeared able to wobble the aging fighter. Don’t get me wrong he wins his fights with relative ease but Trout is a different kettle of fish (pardon the pun).

Trout has the big win against Miguel Cotto which was a fantastic result and fully deserved, plus he beat him more convincingly than Floyd Mayweather did. Other than that, his other wins are less impressive but good wins non the less and to his credit his record is far less padded than that of Alvarez. He has reached the same level with almost half the amount of fights but the same amount of time. So on paper it is very close.
