David Price Stepping in the Right Direction

price2By Michael Byrne: David Price (15-0, 13 KO’s) will meet Tony Thompson (36-3, 24 KO’s) in the Echo Arena on February 23rd. It would seem Price’s promoter, Frank Maloney, is finally willing to put his prize possession in a big fight.

Price finally met with a ‘decent’ record in mid-2011 when he was put in with late replacement Tom Dallas, who was 15-0 at the time, but Dallas had never fought anyone of note, either. After putting him away in 2 rounds, Price has stayed with domestic level fighters in John McDermott, Sam Sexton, Audley Harrison, and Matt Skelton. These four lasted a grand total of 7 rounds against the very heavy-handed Price.

David Price faces Tony Thompson in Liverpool on February 23rd

By Scott Gilfoid: Unbeaten heavyweight prospect David Price (15-0, 13 KO’s) still isn’t being matched tough as he’s facing 41-year-old Tony Thompson (36-3, 24 KO’s) on February 23rd at the Echo Arena in Liverpool, England. This is some kind of unreal string of old fighters that Price is building up with him recently beating 40-year-old Audley Harrison, 45-year-old Matt Skelton and now fighting 41-year-old Tony Thompson.

Price-Thompson: Is David stunting his career with weak opposition?

price23By Scott Gilfoid: The trainer wheels are still very much on despite unbeaten British heavyweight David Price (15-0, 13 KO’s) about to turn 30 in July, and there’s seemingly no end in sight with his never-ending soft opponents for the former 2008 British Olympian. Price will be fighting 41-year-old Tony Thompson (36-3, 24 KO’s) on February 23rd at the Echo Arena in Liverpool, England in what is supposed to be a step up fight for the 6’8” Price. How a fighter that looks as shot as Thompson can be any kind of a step up fight is beyond me.

Price may be doing a good job of padding his record and convincing the kool-aid drinkers who don’t have a clue that Thompson is no longer what he once was many years, but isn’t fooling me. This isn’t helping Price improve. It’s actually hurting him because it’s stunting his career by causing him to stay in the same place in his boxing development instead of improving.

Tony Thompson – David Price a done deal for February 23rd in Liverpool

price3By Scott Gilfoid: 41-year-old heavyweight Tony Thompson (36-3, 24 KO’s) has worked out a deal to face unbeaten British heavyweight David Price (15-0, 13 KO’s) on February 23rd at the Echo Arena, in Liverpool, UK, according to Dan Rafael. Thompson reportedly wasn’t happy with the $40,000 that was offered to him and he felt that he deserved more than this to take on the 29-year-old Price.

The Echo arena has a seating capacity of 11,000 and if Price can sell out the arena that’s a pretty healthy gate. I don’t blame Thompson for wanting more money. He deserves a good payday for this fight if Price is a big ticket seller.

David Price sees himself capturing the EBU heavyweight title in 2013

price45By Scott Gilfoid: 29-year-old heavyweight prospect David Price (15-0, 13 KO’s) has set a goal for himself to capture the EBU heavyweight title in 2013. That’s one of Price’s goals, as well as fighting in a heavyweight title eliminator bout. Price will turn 30 in July 2013, and that’s kind of old for a fighter that is looking to capture an EBU heavyweight title. That’s kind of ripe for a fighter looking to win an EBU title.

Fighters usually capture that belt in their early 20s and then move on to bigger and better things, yet Price is looking to fight for the EBU title as a 30-year-old. That’s interesting, and I think kind of goal that would be better forgotten about, at least that’s what I would recommend if I was Price’s promoter.

Tony Thompson looking to get better deal for David Price fight

thompson323By Scott Gilfoid: According to Dan Rafael of ESPN, 41-year-old Tony Thompson (36-3, 24 KO’s) has reportedly been offered $40,000 to fight unbeaten British and Commonwealth heavyweight champion David Price (15-0, 13 KO’s) on February 23rd in the 8000 seat Echo Arena, in Liverpool, England.

Thompson hasn’t signed the contract yet and he wants to get a better deal, because he feels he’s worth more than just $40,000.

Thompson told ESPN “I know the fight is worth more than that, so I’m still trying to negotiate. I want to take the fight but I have other offers that are just as viable.”
You can’t blame Thompson for wanting to get more because $40,000 isn’t really that much money for the fight.

British Heavyweight Weekend: What did we learn?

Image: British Heavyweight Weekend: What did we learn?By Paul McT: Both Tyson Fury and David Price were in action over the last two days, both came away with a win but what did each fight say about how far these prospects have come?

Friday night boxing in Britain is uncommon, but a welcome addition nonetheless. Friday’s action was interesting, with Price fighting a tough weathered fighter in Matt Skelton, and Andrew ”Freddie” Flintoff  facing off against Richard Dawson, a fellow novice. The less said about the Flintoff fight the better, although I myself appreciate the publicity boxing received.

David Price: More of the same

Yet another brutal knockout victory for the softly spoken Price showcased his power, again. As impressive as his power is, the recent lack of rounds is dangerous, we have yet to see him being pushed or even have his defence tested.

Tony Thompson isn’t a step up fight for David Price

Image: Tony Thompson isn't a step up fight for David PriceBy Scott Gilfoid: It’s looking like unbeaten heavyweight David Price (15-0, 13 KO’s) will be taking his padded record into a fight against 41-year-old Tony Thompson (36-3, 24 KO’s) in February. Thompson, 6’5″, is being mentioned as the possible next opponent for the 6’8″ Price, and a lot of Price’s boxing fans see this as a big step up fight for Price.

I hate to rain on Price’s parade, but Thompson is not a step anymore, he’s more of a straight step for Price from 45-year-old Skelton to 41-year-old Thompson. This would have been a step up for Price four years ago when Thompson was still looking good and fighting on a high level, but his fight against Wladimir Klitschko last July proved that Thompson isn’t the same fighter he was in the past. He looks so much slower now, and he doesn’t throw punches like he used to.

Price obliterates Skelton; 41-year-old Tony Thompson next

Image: Price obliterates Skelton; 41-year-old Tony Thompson nextBy William Mackay: British and Commonwealth heavyweight champion David Price (15-0, 13 KO’s) did what many boxing fans expected him to do tonight by blowing away Matt Skelton (28-7, 23 KO’s) a the Aintree Equestrian Centre, Liverpool, Merseyside, United Kingdom.

Price badly hurt Skelton with a series of powerful body shots in the 2nd round that sent Skelton down on the canvas in pain. The referee stopped the fight at that point. Skelton’s corner threw the towel in previous to the knockdown.
