Pacquiao still determined to retire after Bradley fight

pac563By Chris Williams: Manny Pacquiao (57-6-2, 38 KOs) insists that he still plans on retiring after he fights Timothy Bradley (33-1-1, 13 KOs) for the third time in their fight on April 9 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum and trainer Freddie Roach both believe that Pacquiao won’t retire, and for that reason they’re not selling his third fight with Bradley as his final one. They see Pacquiao coming out of retirement to resume his career.

“I don’t care what others think but as for me, I will retire after the Bradley fight),” said Pacquiao to philboxing.com.

Pacquiao almost has to retire after the Bradley fight, because if he doesn’t hang up the gloves, his promoter Arum is likely going to lean on him to try and get him to fight WBO light welterweight champion Terence Crawford, who is one of Arum’s promising fighters in his Top Rank stable.

Khan expects Canelo PPV numbers to beat Pacquiao-Bradley 3 PPV numbers

khan55By Chris Williams: Amir Khan (31-3, 19 KOs) believes that Bob Arum, the promoter for Manny Pacquiao, made a mistake in failing to sign him for Pacquiao’s next opponent on April 9. Arum had the chance of getting Khan as Pacquiao’s next opponent for a fight that likely would have made huge money on HBO PPV.

Instead of doing that, Arum went with one of his own Top Rank stable fighters in WBO 147lb champion Tim Bradley as Pacquiao’s next opponent. Pacquiao has already fought Bradley twice previously, and there is not much interest from the fans in seeing a third fight between them.

In the meantime, Khan will be fighting WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs) on May 7 on HBO pay-per-view from the T-Mobile Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. Khan expects his fight against Canelo will bring in more PPV buys than the Pacquiao-Bradley 3 fight.

Arum: I didn’t say HBO didn’t accept Khan as an opponent for Pacquiao

Image: Arum: I didn’t say HBO didn’t accept Khan as an opponent for PacquiaoBy Chris Williams: Top Rank promoter Bob Arum says HBO didn’t reject Amir Khan (31-3, 19 KOs) as an opponent for Manny Pacquiao’s next and perhaps final fight of his career on April 9 on HBO PPV. Arum says he was told by them that WBO welterweight champion Tim Bradley was a more difficult opponent for Pacquiao, and a fighter that would bring in more sales than Khan or Terence Crawford.

Arum said previously that the cable and satellite distributors had rejected Khan as an opponent for Pacquiao. If that’s the case, then it’s going to be bad if the Khan vs. Saul “Canelo” Alvarez fight brings in many more pay-per-view buys than the Pacquiao-Bradley fight on HBO PPV.

Tim Bradley vacates WBO 147lb title

bradley99999By Chris Williams: Tim Bradley (33-1-1, 13 KOs) has vacated his WBO welterweight title as of Tuesday.

Bradley, 33, had little choice but to give up his WBO 147lb title because he chose to bypass his #1 WBO mandatory challenger Sadam Ali in favor of fighting Manny Pacquiao on April 9. If Bradley had taken the Ali fight, which has to be seen as a 50-50 fight, he wouldn’t have gotten the third fight against Pacquiao. The money for the Pacquiao fight is obviously much more than what Bradley would have received for facing Ali.

Roach to start training Pacquiao on February 14 in Philippines

pac3366By Chris Williams: Trainer Freddie Roach will be flying over the Philippines on February 14 to start training Manny Pacquiao in General Santos for his fight against Tim Bradley (33-1-1, 13 KOs) on April 9 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. Pacquiao and Bradley are knotted up at 1-1 in the two fights they’ve had with each other. Pacquiao wants to break that tie and end his career and his Bradley series with a victory.

It’s probably not the smartest thing for Pacquiao to do in choosing to train in the Philippines, where he’ll have tons of distractions from boxing fans. He’s also running for a political seat in the senate in an election in May.

You have to wonder whether Pacquiao is looking to kill two birds with one stone by campaigning for the senate spot while also training for the Bradley fight.

Who is the Top welterweight in the division?

bradley2222222By Tim Fletcher: With Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao clearing out of the sport, it leaves a lot of unknowns about who the top guy is at 147. While some people believe that Tim Bradley is the natural guy to be seen as the replacement for Mayweather, there’s a lot fans that believe that the winner of the Keith Thurman vs. Shawn Porter fight will determine who the best overall fighter is at 147.

I’m sure IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook would have something to so about that, however, because he already beat Porter in 2014. If Thurman defeats Porter, he would still have a question mark over his head.

Atlas won’t be a factor in Pacquiao-Bradley 3, says Penalosa

atlasBy Tim Fletcher: Former world champion Gerry Penalosa doubts the impact new trainer Teddy Atlas will be able to make with WBO welterweight champion Tim Bradley (33-1-1, 13 KOs) in his third fight with Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao (57-6-2, 38 KOs) in their rematch on April 9 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Penalosa thinks that Bradley has a lot of belief and trust in Atlas at this point of their teaming up with one another, but he doesn’t see Atlas as being capable of improving or changing Bradley enough for him to defeat Pacquiao in this fight.

The problem that Atlas has in his efforts to improve Bradley and give him a different look than before is that he’s already given different looks in past fights with Pacquiao. We’ve seen Bradley box, slug and move in his two fights with Pacquiao.

Arum says Pacquiao has full range of motion in surgically repaired shoulder

arum5By Chris Williams: Top Rank promoter Bob Arum is excited about his fighter Manny Pacquiao (57-6-2, 38 KOs) after he was recently given clearance from his surgeon for him to start training for his April 9 fight against WBO welterweight champion Timothy Bradley (33-1-1, 13 KOs) for their fight on HBO pay-per-view at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The surgeon checked out Pacquiao’s surgically repaired right shoulder and have given him the green light to start training. This is the same shoulder that Pacquiao suffered a torn rotator cuff during or before his fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. last May. Arum is pleased about Pacquiao being ready to go for this fight, and he feels that the boxing fans are going to see a great Pacquiao.

I’m not sure if that’s going to be the case though, because Pacquiao hadn’t looked great in many years. The last time Pacquiao looked really good was in 2009 in his fight against Miguel Cotto. Since that fight, Pacquiao has performed in a so-so fashion. The fights where Pacquiao has shined were in mismatches against a faded Shane Mosley, and mediocre fighters Chris Algieri and Brandon Rios.

Pacquiao says he wants to KO Bradley, Roach pleased

pac3366By Chris Williams: Trainer Freddie Roach says that former eight division world champion Manny Pacquiao has told him that he’ll be looking to score a stoppage on April 9 in his third fight against WBO welterweight champion Tim Bradley on HBO pay-per-view from the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Pacquiao would do well to try and get the 5’6” Bradley out of there, because the last thing he needs is to lose the fight by a controversial decision like he did in their first fight in 2012.

Bradley will be looking to score a knockout on a body shot in this fight, so it makes sense for Pacquiao to look for a KO as fast as he can in this third and likely final fight between them.

Roach: This isn’t the end for Pacquiao

pac63By Chris Williams: Trainer Freddie Roach is holding out hope that his fighter Manny Pacquiao, who obviously pays him very, very well, will continue his pro career beyond his third fight against WBO welterweight champion Timothy Bradley on April 9. Pacquiao will be running for a senate seat in the Philippines in May, and Roach isn’t sure whether he would be able to continue his career if elected into that position.

However, Roach still thinks that Pacquiao won’t be able to resist the idea of fighting while holding office in the senate. He just thinks Pacquiao will continue fighting. You can call it wishful thinking on Roach’s part, because the chances aren’t too good that Pacquiao will continue his career beyond his third fight against Bradley, which few boxing fans want to see.
