Jose Pedraza vs. Stephen Smith tonight on Showtime

smith44(Credit: Stephanie Trapp/SHOWTIME) By Scott Gilfoid: #1 IBF Stephen Smith (23-1, 12 KOs) will be challenging for a world title tonight against IBF super featherweight champion Jose “Sniper” Pedraza (21-0, 12 KOs) on Showtime Championship Boxing from the Foxwoods Resort, in Mashantucket, Connecticut. Smith, 30, has won his last 10 fights since being whipped by Lee Selby by an 8th round knockout in 2011.

Unfortunately, Smith hasn’t been taking on what I feel are the best fighters during that stretch so it’s hard to know whether he’s improved or not. You can argue that Smith did very little to earn a title shot against the hard hitting Pedraza, as all Smith had to do in order to get the fight with Pedraza was beat these guys: 34-year-old Devis Boschiero, Barrington Brown (6-10), Jacek Wylezol (11-8), and Pedro Navarrete (28-18-3).

Liverpool – Home of UK Boxing

bellew5By Rachel Aylett: With the recent successes of the Smith brothers, I thought it would be good to have a look at the best fighters currently plying their trade out of Liverpool, currently the hub of boxing in the UK. I have categorized them into five groups, as you will see below.

World level

Tony Bellew, 20-1-1 (12). In some ways Bellew is lucky in that he fights in the light-heavyweight division, one of the weakest in boxing. This is a double-edged sword however as it also means there are fewer opportunities to secure big purses. Bellew has been promised a shot at the winner of Saturday night’s WBC title fight between fearsome puncher Adonis Stevenson and former IBF champion Tavoris Cloud.

Wednesday 27th April

Last night saw an old fashioned tare up between featherweights John Simpson (British champion) and Stephen Smith (Commonwealth champion). The fight was a close contest through the vast majority of the fight but Smith was the quickest to hit top gear. The home fighter took most of the early rounds with quick hands and decent power, wobbling the Scottish Simpson on a few occasions.

Boxing News24 interview with Stephen Smith

By Liam Santiago: On October 30th, Stephen Smith will fight on the undercard of his brother’s British title fight, at the Echo arena, Liverpool. Although it will only be the Liverpool prospect’s eighth fight, he is already looking very promising in the pro ranks. Also on the bill will be Stephen’s younger brother Liam, James DeGale, Frankie Gavin and Tony Belew, along with the British welterweight clash between Michael Jenkins and Kell Brook. Stephen Smith was kind enough to let me ask him a few questions.
