Canelo-Cotto almost a done deal for March 8th!

canelo7657By Dan Ambrose: The March 8th mega fight between former WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-1-1, 30 KO’s) and former three division world champion Miguel Cotto (38-4, 31 KO’s) is almost a done deal, according to the WBC. The fight is expected to be announced in the coming days by Golden Boy Promotions.

Cotto and Canelo have met with Golden Boy in Los Angeles, and things are looking good.

Both fighters are kind of going into this fight in less than optimal conditions career-wise, since Canelo was beaten badly by Floyd Mayweather Jr. in losing a one-sided 12 round decision last September, and Cotto has lost two out of his last three fights.

Trout: I could’ve done better against Mayweather than Canelo

canelo65By Dan Ambrose: Former WBA junior middleweight champion Austin Trout (26-1, 14 KO’s) wasn’t impressed at all in the way that Saul “Canelo” Alvarez fought Floyd Mayweather Jr. last September in a 12 round decision losing effort. Trout says Canelo’s performance not only made him look bad, but it also made himself look bad because he had lost to Canelo last April, albeit by a decision that Trout didn’t agree with.

Trout said this via Golden Boy Promotions twitter “I kept thinking ‘@caneloOfficial is making us both look bad’ during his fight with Floyd Mayweather. I could’ve done better.”

There’s no question that Trout would have done better than Canelo, because he wouldn’t have made the mistake of going to the ropes for breathers the way that Canelo did on numerous occasions and letting Floyd tee off on him from that position.

Austin Trout doubts Canelo will fight him again

trout77By Dan Ambrose: Former WBA junior middleweight champion Austin Trout (26-1, 14 KO’s) was amused recently when he heard Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer saying that Saul “Canelo” Alvarez could end up facing the winner of Trout’s December 7th fight against Erislandy Lara (18-1-2, 12 KO’s) at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Trout doesn’t see Canelo fighting him or Lara, but he’s hoping that Schaefer will make that fight if he gets past Lara. Trout says he feels that he didn’t lose his fight against Canelo earlier this year. He initially agreed that he lost, but after watching the fight on replay, Trout felt that he either won the fight or it should have been scored draw.

Andrade says he’d beat Mayweather, Canelo and Cotto

andradeBy Dan Ambrose: #2 WBO Demetrius Andrade (19-0, 13 KO’s) will be facing #1 WBO Vanes Martirosyan (33-0-1, 21 KO’s) this Saturday night for the vacant WBO junior middleweight title on HBO at the American Bank Center, in Corpus Christi, Texas, USA. While Andrade still still hasn’t beaten Martirosyan, he already believes that he’ll beat Floyd Mayweather Jr., Miguel Cotto, Erislandy Lara and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez if given the chance.

The chances of Andrade getting fights against any of them are quite low, even if he stops Martirosyan on Saturday night. Andrade doesn’t have the name attract interest from any of those fighters except for perhaps Lara.

Canelo needs 3 big names for his PPV bouts in 2014

canelo878By Dan Ambrose: With former WBA/WBC light middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-1-1, 30 KO’s) announcing last week that he plans on fighting three times in 2014 with all of the fights being pay-per-view bouts, it’s put a ton of pressure on Canelo, his team and Golden Boy Promotions to try and dig up three big names for him to fight in order for his PPV cards to be a success.

The problem Canelo has is it’s going to be tough for Golden Boy to find him three big names in one year.

Canelo to fight three times in 2014 – all on PPV

canelo544By Dan Ambrose: Former WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-1-1, 30 KO’s) announced his next three fight dates for 2014, and every one of them are on pay-per-view. The 23-year-old Canelo had his first headlining fight on PPV last September in his mega-fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. on Showtime in Las Vegas, and now Canelo figures that he’s popular enough for all of his fights to be on PPV.

On his twitter, Canelo announced the following dates for his next three fights: March 8th, July 26th and November 22nd.

Canelo training for Cotto or Sergio Martinez

canelo5443By Dan Ambrose: Former WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-1-1, 30 KO’s) is already back in the gym training for his next fight which will be against either WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez or Miguel Cotto. Canelo will be meeting with Golden Boy Promotions president Oscar De La Hoya in their office in Los Angeles to sign a contract for his next fight and it’s expected to be either Cotto or Sergio, according to Esto.

Canelo’s adviser Eddy Reynoso said this via Esto “It will be a big fight, possibly against Cotto or Martinez of Argentina.”

The red-headed Canelo took the past month off after his disappointing 12 round majority decision defeat to Floyd Mayweather Jr. last month in Las Vegas, Nevada. Canelo, 23, was convinced that he was going to win the fight, but he ended up getting totally dominated by the 36-year-old Mayweather.

Prediction on Golden Boys future plans

broner999Golden Boy promotions last grand event “The One” didn’t live up to hype and the action didn’t play as we expected. Although others may have different opinions, that’s what I thought of the event. Golden Boy had yet to release news regarding their future events and they surprised me and I’m sure many hardcore boxing fans with 2 stacked cards for December of this year.

December 7th will be featuring a co main event that  gave me butterflies and is a fight I’ve been anticipating for months now. Austin Trout (26-1, 14 KO’s Vs Erislandy Lara (18-1-2, 12 KO’s) for the WBA interim title.

Like many I was hoping that fight would have been put on “The One” rather than Carlos Molina vs Ishe Smith but what’s happened has happened. But that fight could be a fight of the year due to Trout and Lara’s slick style of fighting. And I was also amused by the twitter trash talk between the two.

How Golden Boy ruined Canelo Alvarez

canelo89By Eric Johnson: A couple of months ago, right after “The One” was announced. I wrote an article titled “Canelo’s Instant Fan base”, which you can revisit with this link. http://www.boxingnews24.com/2013/06/canelos-instant-fan-base/. It was an article about how at time Mexican fighters are thought out to be the next great Mexican champion. Prematurely given the torch, well before proving themselves worthy.

I stressed that every Mexican fighter isn’t the next Chavez, Sanchez or Olivaras. I remember in 2011, when Victor Ortiz was the hottest Welterweight in the fight game. He was coming off fight of the year against then undefeated titlist Andre Berto. He was the champion and had all the confidence in the world when he went up against Floyd Mayweather Jr. In the end, he succumbed to the moment and left with a loss. This past September we watched Canelo Alvarez fall to the same fate, and there is no one but Golden Boy Promotions to blame. Here’s why.

Fans want Canelo-Cotto, not Cotto-Martinez

canelo76By Dan Ambrose: It looks like Bob Arum of Top Rank, Lou Dibella and Sampson Lewkowicz may be talking about a fight that boxing fans aren’t all that interested in seeing with the Miguel Cotto vs. Sergio Martinez idea. According to a poll at RingTV, boxing fans much prefer to see Cotto fight Saul “Canelo” Alvarez than Sergio Martinez. 48.8 percent of the fans polled picked Cotto-Canelo as the fight they want to see, whereas only 30.1 percent want to see Cotto fight the aging 39-year-old Martinez.

Cotto’s adviser Gaby Penagaricano also seems intrigued at the idea of Cotto and Canelo mixing it up, saying to RingTV “We need to know what makes the most sense for Miguel. I think that [a fight] with Canelo] would be a very big fight.”
