Canelo vs. Cotto bout expected to be announced next week

canelo901By Dan Ambrose: A mini-mega fight between Miguel Cotto (38-4, 31 KO’s) and former WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-1-1, 30 KO’s) is expected to be announced this week for March 8th, according to Husleboss. The fight will be on Showtime pay-per-view from the MGM Grand, in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA. This fight pits two former victims of Floyd Mayweather Jr. to face off. The winner could find himself back in with Mayweather, as it would be the most appealing option for them.

Golden Boy Promotions recently offered Cotto $10 million+ to take the fight with Canelo, and it seemed pretty obvious that was going to take it. He said he wanted to think it over, because he was also considering a fight against WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez for his 160 lb. belt.

Mundine wants Canelo, Cotto or Mayweather next

mundine6712By Allan Fox: Former WBA super middleweight champion Anthony Mundine (45-5, 27 KO’s) has set his sights on a fight against one of the top fighters in boxing in Floyd Mayweather Jr., Saul “Canelo” Alvarez or Miguel Cotto, following Mundine’s 6th round stoppage win over 42-year-old Shane Mosley last Wednesday night at the Allphones Arena, Olympic Park, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.

While it may have seen as if the 38-year-old Mundine was merely cherry-picking an older fighter to try and get himself in the thick of things at 147 and 154, Mosley was actually highly ranked by the WBC at #5 and WBA at #6 in the 147 lb. division. Mundine’s win, whether people like it or not, puts him among the big names in the sport.

Mayweather Sr: Pacquiao needs to beat Canelo or Guerrero to redeem himself for Floyd Jr. fight

canelo785By Chris Williams: Floyd Mayweather Sr. wasn’t impressed with Manny Pacquiao’s opponent Brandon Rios last Saturday night, as he feels that Rios showed that he didn’t have any skills in that fight. Mayweather Sr. says that fight wasn’t nearly enough for Pacquiao to show that he’s redeemed himself from his losses to Tim Bradley and Juan Manuel Marquez.

Mayweather Sr. says that if Pacquiao wants to redeem himself and get a bout against Floyd Mayweather Jr., then he’s going to need to beat Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and/or Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero. If he can beat one or both of them, then Mayweather Sr. says Pacquiao deserves a fight against Floyd Jr.

Canelo PPV fight at MGM Grand in Las Vegas on March 8th

canelo84By Dan Ambrose: Former WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-1-1, 30 KO’s) has decided to fight at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada, for his next fight on March 8th next year. It’s going to be a pay-per-view bout against a still to be determined opponent. This will be Canelo’s first fight where he himself is the main attraction in a PPV bout.

In his last fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. last September, it was Mayweather who was considered the main draw. This time it’s going to be Canelo, and it’ll be a rest to his drawing power whether he can bring in the fans to purchase his fight on PPV.

Miguel Cotto must go for both Canelo and Martinez in 2014

cotto22By Robbie Bannatyne: Many articles I have read recently on the topic of Miguel Cotto- including a recent blog posting by ESPN’s Dan Rafael- insist that the Puerto Rican, three weight world champion, will have to make a choice between a fight with Saul Alvarez or Sergio Martinez.

However, my overwhelming feeling is the two do not need to be mutually exclusive. Miguel Cotto could conceivably fight Canelo Showtime PPV on March 8th the date proposed by Richard Schaefer of Golden Boy Promotions- before turning his attentions to securing a PPV showdown with Sergio Martinez later in 2014.

Canelo-Cotto almost a done deal for March 8th!

canelo7657By Dan Ambrose: The March 8th mega fight between former WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-1-1, 30 KO’s) and former three division world champion Miguel Cotto (38-4, 31 KO’s) is almost a done deal, according to the WBC. The fight is expected to be announced in the coming days by Golden Boy Promotions.

Cotto and Canelo have met with Golden Boy in Los Angeles, and things are looking good.

Both fighters are kind of going into this fight in less than optimal conditions career-wise, since Canelo was beaten badly by Floyd Mayweather Jr. in losing a one-sided 12 round decision last September, and Cotto has lost two out of his last three fights.

Trout: I could’ve done better against Mayweather than Canelo

canelo65By Dan Ambrose: Former WBA junior middleweight champion Austin Trout (26-1, 14 KO’s) wasn’t impressed at all in the way that Saul “Canelo” Alvarez fought Floyd Mayweather Jr. last September in a 12 round decision losing effort. Trout says Canelo’s performance not only made him look bad, but it also made himself look bad because he had lost to Canelo last April, albeit by a decision that Trout didn’t agree with.

Trout said this via Golden Boy Promotions twitter “I kept thinking ‘@caneloOfficial is making us both look bad’ during his fight with Floyd Mayweather. I could’ve done better.”

There’s no question that Trout would have done better than Canelo, because he wouldn’t have made the mistake of going to the ropes for breathers the way that Canelo did on numerous occasions and letting Floyd tee off on him from that position.

Austin Trout doubts Canelo will fight him again

trout77By Dan Ambrose: Former WBA junior middleweight champion Austin Trout (26-1, 14 KO’s) was amused recently when he heard Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer saying that Saul “Canelo” Alvarez could end up facing the winner of Trout’s December 7th fight against Erislandy Lara (18-1-2, 12 KO’s) at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Trout doesn’t see Canelo fighting him or Lara, but he’s hoping that Schaefer will make that fight if he gets past Lara. Trout says he feels that he didn’t lose his fight against Canelo earlier this year. He initially agreed that he lost, but after watching the fight on replay, Trout felt that he either won the fight or it should have been scored draw.

Andrade says he’d beat Mayweather, Canelo and Cotto

andradeBy Dan Ambrose: #2 WBO Demetrius Andrade (19-0, 13 KO’s) will be facing #1 WBO Vanes Martirosyan (33-0-1, 21 KO’s) this Saturday night for the vacant WBO junior middleweight title on HBO at the American Bank Center, in Corpus Christi, Texas, USA. While Andrade still still hasn’t beaten Martirosyan, he already believes that he’ll beat Floyd Mayweather Jr., Miguel Cotto, Erislandy Lara and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez if given the chance.

The chances of Andrade getting fights against any of them are quite low, even if he stops Martirosyan on Saturday night. Andrade doesn’t have the name attract interest from any of those fighters except for perhaps Lara.

Canelo needs 3 big names for his PPV bouts in 2014

canelo878By Dan Ambrose: With former WBA/WBC light middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-1-1, 30 KO’s) announcing last week that he plans on fighting three times in 2014 with all of the fights being pay-per-view bouts, it’s put a ton of pressure on Canelo, his team and Golden Boy Promotions to try and dig up three big names for him to fight in order for his PPV cards to be a success.

The problem Canelo has is it’s going to be tough for Golden Boy to find him three big names in one year.
