By Dan Ambrose: The March 8th mega fight between former WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-1-1, 30 KO’s) and former three division world champion Miguel Cotto (38-4, 31 KO’s) is almost a done deal, according to the WBC. The fight is expected to be announced in the coming days by Golden Boy Promotions.
Cotto and Canelo have met with Golden Boy in Los Angeles, and things are looking good.
Both fighters are kind of going into this fight in less than optimal conditions career-wise, since Canelo was beaten badly by Floyd Mayweather Jr. in losing a one-sided 12 round decision last September, and Cotto has lost two out of his last three fights.
By Dan Ambrose: Former WBA junior middleweight champion Austin Trout (26-1, 14 KO’s) wasn’t impressed at all in the way that Saul “Canelo” Alvarez fought Floyd Mayweather Jr. last September in a 12 round decision losing effort. Trout says Canelo’s performance not only made him look bad, but it also made himself look bad because he had lost to Canelo last April, albeit by a decision that Trout didn’t agree with.
By Dan Ambrose: Former WBA junior middleweight champion Austin Trout (26-1, 14 KO’s) was amused recently when he heard Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer saying that Saul “Canelo” Alvarez could end up facing the winner of Trout’s December 7th fight against Erislandy Lara (18-1-2, 12 KO’s) at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.
By Dan Ambrose: #2 WBO Demetrius Andrade (19-0, 13 KO’s) will be facing #1 WBO Vanes Martirosyan (33-0-1, 21 KO’s) this Saturday night for the vacant WBO junior middleweight title on HBO at the American Bank Center, in Corpus Christi, Texas, USA. While Andrade still still hasn’t beaten Martirosyan, he already believes that he’ll beat Floyd Mayweather Jr., Miguel Cotto, Erislandy Lara and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez if given the chance.
By Dan Ambrose: With former WBA/WBC light middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-1-1, 30 KO’s) announcing last week that he plans on fighting three times in 2014 with all of the fights being pay-per-view bouts, it’s put a ton of pressure on Canelo, his team and Golden Boy Promotions to try and dig up three big names for him to fight in order for his PPV cards to be a success.
By Dan Ambrose: Former WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-1-1, 30 KO’s) announced his next three fight dates for 2014, and every one of them are on pay-per-view. The 23-year-old Canelo had his first headlining fight on PPV last September in his mega-fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. on Showtime in Las Vegas, and now Canelo figures that he’s popular enough for all of his fights to be on PPV.
By Dan Ambrose: Former WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-1-1, 30 KO’s) is already back in the gym training for his next fight which will be against either WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez or Miguel Cotto. Canelo will be meeting with Golden Boy Promotions president Oscar De La Hoya in their office in Los Angeles to sign a contract for his next fight and it’s expected to be either Cotto or Sergio, according to Esto.
Golden Boy promotions last grand event “The One” didn’t live up to hype and the action didn’t play as we expected. Although others may have different opinions, that’s what I thought of the event. Golden Boy had yet to release news regarding their future events and they surprised me and I’m sure many hardcore boxing fans with 2 stacked cards for December of this year.
By Eric Johnson: A couple of months ago, right after “The One” was announced. I wrote an article titled “Canelo’s Instant Fan base”, which you can revisit with this link. http://www.boxingnews24.com/2013/06/canelos-instant-fan-base/. It was an article about how at time Mexican fighters are thought out to be the next great Mexican champion. Prematurely given the torch, well before proving themselves worthy.
By Dan Ambrose: It looks like Bob Arum of Top Rank, Lou Dibella and Sampson Lewkowicz may be talking about a fight that boxing fans aren’t all that interested in seeing with the Miguel Cotto vs. Sergio Martinez idea. According to a poll at RingTV, boxing fans much prefer to see Cotto fight Saul “Canelo” Alvarez than Sergio Martinez. 48.8 percent of the fans polled picked Cotto-Canelo as the fight they want to see, whereas only 30.1 percent want to see Cotto fight the aging 39-year-old Martinez.
