Roach says Canelo, Golovkin or Chavez Jr is Cotto’s possible next opponent

roachBy Dan Ambrose: Trainer Freddie Roach still isn’t willing to display his cards about how he plans on telling his fighter WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (39-4, 32 KOs) to fight next in December. Roach went on a scouting run last night at Madison Square Garden in New York to watch WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin’s fight against Daniel Geale.

Roach had seen Golovkin on video, but he wanted to see him live in order to get a better estimation of his power and to hear the sound of his punches.

Roach had previously mentioned Saul “Canelo” Alvarez’s name as a potential opponent for Cotto to fight in December, but a new name is former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. He hadn’t been talking about the much, much bigger Chavez Jr as a potential opponent for Cotto, perhaps due to Chavez Jr’s 6’1”, 190+ frame.

Will Cotto or Canelo fight Golovkin next?

golovkin45By Cameron Gillon: Last night at Madison Square Garden in New York City America, power punching Gennady ‘GGG’ Golovkin (30-0, 27 KOs) made short work of Australia’s Daniel Geale (30-3, 16 KOs) to retain his WBA and IBO middleweight world titles in a 3rd round knockout. I myself made a prediction of a 8th or 9th round KO for Golovkin.

I don’t think many thought he would win the fight that quickly as some thought that Geale was a bit of a step up to the type of opposition Golovkin has faced, but it’s not 16 fights in a row that Gennady Golovkin has won by the way of knockout or a referee stopping the fight taking the run all the way back to 2009. Straight after the win Golovkin was interviews by HBO commentator Max Kellerman and when asked who he would like to face next, he said he would like a unification fight against the other champions in Peter Quillin, Sam Soliman or Miguel Cotto but the name that stood out was Cotto.

Chavez Sr comments on Canelo vs. Lara fight

canelo037By Francisco Gurrola: Watching the TV show “Golpe a Golpe, I was very interested as to what the comments would be about the Saul “Canelo” Alvarez vs Erislandy “The American Dream” Lara fight. My first Impressions on the commentators was that none of them were fully satisfied with the fight at the MGM Grand on July 12th; as if something was missing, something was incomplete, perhaps as if the fight didn’t even happen.

When the ESPN commentators asked Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. about the fight his expressions said it all. These aren’t exact words, but from a recap the legend suggested that “Canelo” Alvarez did not do enough to come out victorious; at the same time he also acknowledged that Lara was on the same boat as Canelo.

Dela Hoya may not agree to a Canelo-Golovkin Fight

canelo14By Idris Morrey: The kind of talent waiting to face Saul “Canelo” Alvarez is growing steadily by the day. Names are coming up and they have convincing records to deserve a match-up with the hard hitting Mexican.

The worrying bit is whether Canelo Alvarez’s promoter and Golden boy president Oscar Dela Hoya will really accept to let lose one of his from from the stable to face the dangerous middleweight fighters. From earlier on, it was expressed during the All Access Showtime episodes that De La Hoya was against Canelo fighting the Cuban Boxer Erislandy Lara. From his style, the left- handed Lara has been a dreaded fighter. Oscar publicly confessed that he did not want Canelo to face the Cuban. In their recent fight, it became evident that Dela Hoya’s fear was real from the beginning

Demetrius Andrade still hoping to get Canelo or Lara fight

andrade76666By Dan Ambrose: WBO junior middleweight champion Demetrius Andrade (21-0, 14 KO’s) is hoping that former WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez or Erislandy Lara (19-2-2, 12 KO’s) will step up to face him now that the two fighters have settled their differences in their recent bouts.

Andrade wants Golden Boy Promotions president Oscar De La Hoya to match Canelo up against him next. Andrade will put his WBO 154 pound title on the line so that the 24-year-old Canelo will have a chance to capture the belt if that’s what he wants.

Mancini – Canelo’s an ordinary fighter; Lara beat him

canelo06By Dan Ambrose: Former WBA lightweight champion Ray Mancini thinks that Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (44-1-1, 31 KOs) is an ordinary fighter with marginal skills, and that he should have been given a defeat in his fight against Erislandy Lara this month.

Mancini, like many other boxing experts, feels that Lara out-boxed Canelo for 12 rounds, but ultimately lost the fight to the house fighter, the guy that brings in more money for the sport of boxing.

Mancini thinks that Canelo’s trainers haven’t taught him the things that he needs to know, and that they were exposed for what they didn’t tell him in Canelo’s loss to Floyd Mayweather Jr. Mancino thinks Canelo is a big puncher, but not a skilled one and not one that can handle any kind of movement.

Maidana thinks Canelo and Guerrero were afraid of Mayweather

_DSC7977(Photo credit: Idris Erba) By Chris Williams: Marcos Maidana (35-4, 31 KO’s) isn’t willing to give Floyd Mayweather Jr (46-0, 26 KOs) full credit for his wins over Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero in 2013 for some reason. Rather than admitting that Mayweather did a great job of beating Canelo and Guerrero due to his boxing skills being too much for them to handle, Maidana says he thinks Mayweather beat them because they might been afraid of him.

They didn’t fight at the top of their game because they were simply too afraid of Mayweather because of his legend rather than who he actually was. Maidana says the reason he did so well against Mayweather because he showed him no respect and went right at him.

Is Canelo on his way to being the next superstar?

canelo0256By Mauricio Carranza: Former WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (44-1-1, 31 KO’s) is by far the most famous and recognized Junior middleweight on the planet as of today.

I say that fully knowing that Floyd Mayweather Jr is a welterweight and defeated Canelo at 152lbs, which in my eyes does not make Floyd a Jr. Middleweight champion. And also Floyd hasn’t defended either of his WBA and WBC 154 pound titles that he won off of Canelo last September in beating him by a 12 round majority decision.

Cotto interested in Chavez Jr and Canelo bouts

canelo001010101By Dan Ambrose: WBC middleweight title holder Miguel Cotto (39-4, 31 KOs) says that Golden Boy fighter Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and the Top Rank promoted Julio Cesar Chavez Jr are both on his target list as potential opponents for him to step into the ring against. Cotto says he wants to rekindle the Mexico vs. Puerto Rico rivalry.

Cotto, 33, is currently on vacation, but once he comes back he’s going to be sitting down and making a decision about who he’ll be facing in his next fight. December 6th is the target date for Cotto’s next fight. It’s unclear whether he’ll be choosing to defend his WBC middleweight title or not for his next fight.

Is Kirkland vs. Canelo a toss up?

canelo45By Bob Smith: Obviously, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (44-1-1, 31 KOs) is a very skilled and talented boxer who has had an impressive string of wins, and just barely did enough to outpoint Trout and Lara. His only loss is to Floyd Mayweather Jr, but really who can fault him for that, and after all, he is still learning and is only 24 years old.

Canelo is also a naturally big junior middleweight, who rehydrates to the mid-160s or even the low 170s on fight night, and has not only tremendous power, very skillful combinations, and in addition a decent jab and good inside game. Kirkland, by contract, is a typical brawler, who goes non-stop in attack mode after round 1, and is relatively easy to hit. So how could a fight between Canelo and Kirkland be a toss up? Should a contest between them not be a clear Canelo victory?
