Canelo’s message to GGG

1-DSC07313By Dan Ambrose: WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez addressed WBC mandatory challenger Gennady “GGG” Golovkin directly during an interview this week, telling GGG that he’ll “eventually” get the fight against him, but it’s going to take time.

It’s unknown if Canelo is speaking in code by saying that it’ll eventually happen, which could be code for ‘it’s not going to happen in 2016, buddy.’ We’re going to see how serious Canelo is in wanting to defend his WBC middleweight title against Golovkin, because Canelo is going to need to make a decision about the Golovkin fight 15 days after his next title defense against Amir Khan on May 7.

Loeffler: Saunders an option for GGG if no Canelo or Khan fight

saunders43By Jeff Aranow: Tom Loeffler of K2 Promotions says WBO middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders is an option for his fighter IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin if he can’t get the winner of the May 7 fight between WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Amir Khan.

That’s the first priority for Golovkin because he wants the fight against the winner of the Canelo vs. Khan fight so that he has a chance to win the WBC 160lb title inside the ring rather than picking it up from the World Boxing Council stripping Canelo or Khan of the WBC belt for them having failed to face Golovkin.

“We would still be very interested in a fight there with Saunders,” Loeffler said to skysports.com. “If [Canelo or Khan] doesn’t happen, for whatever reason, then Saunders would be at the top of our list to unify the middleweight division. Gennady is the type of fighter that doesn’t care where he fights.”

Breidis Prescott: Canelo stops Khan in six

1-DSC07354By Dan Ambrose: Colombian knockout artist Breidis Prescott is predicting a sixth stoppage victory for WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs) in his fight against Amir “King” Khan (31-3, 19 KOs) on May 7. Prescott expects the 25-year-old Canelo to be too big and too strong for Khan to handle his power.

Prescott knows Khan well from having destroyed him in one round in their fight eight years ago in 2008. In that fight, Prescott dropped Khan hard with a left-right combination in the 1st round. When Khan got back to his feet, Prescott dropped him again and got a stoppage.

Golovkin’s promoter says Khan could be a target

Image: Golovkin’s promoter says Khan could be a targetBy Dan Ambrose: Amir Khan (31-3, 19 KOs) could find himself in the target sights of unbeaten IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (34-0, 31 KOs) in the very near future if Khan pulls off a huge upset of WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs) on May 7 in their fight on HBO pay-per-view in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Golovkin is the WBC mandatory challenger, and it’s already been mandated by the World Boxing Council that the WBC middleweight champion must face Golovkin next. This means that whoever holds the WBC 160lb title will be in the hot seat and will need to face Golovkin next.

Canelo: I know I will be triumphant on May 7

canelo555(Photo credit: Golden Boy Promotions) By Dan Ambrose: WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs) has largely been silent in helping out with the promotion of his own fight against Amir Khan (31-3, 19 KOs) on HBO PPV on May 7.

However, on Thursday, Canelo made some rare comments about his first title defense against Khan, and he let the fans know that he believes he’s going to come out the winner and he’s not looking past the blazing fast Khan for their fight at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Khan: I’m looking to nullify Canelo’s attributes

khan2344555(Photo credit: Golden Boy Promotions) By Dan Ambrose: Challenger Amir Khan (31-3, 19 KOs) says he’s working on what he considers the perfect game plan to defeat WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs) on May 7 on HBO PPV.

Khan, 29, isn’t giving away his strategy that he and trainer Virgil Hunter have that they’ll be using to beat the 5’9” Canelo on 5/7, but it’s unlikely that they’ll be reinventing the wheel for this fight. The blueprint in how to beat Canelo was already created by Floyd Mayweather Jr. in 2013, and it was followed well by Erislandy Lara in his fight with Canelo in 2014.

David Lemieux vs. Glen Tapia added to Canelo-Khan card

lemieux33332By Dan Ambrose: A week after failing to make weight for his 163lb catch-weight fight against James De Lara Rosa, former IBF middleweight champion David Lemieux (34-3, 31 KOs) has been added to the May 7 fight card headlined by WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs) vs. Amir “King” Khan (31-3, 19 KOs).

Lemieux, 27, will be fighting the struggling junior middleweight Glen Tapia (23-2, 15 KOs), who is coming off of a 4th round knockout loss to Michel Soro last May. Tapia, 26, has not fought since then. The Lemieux vs. Tapia fight will be televised on HBO pay-per-view, along with the Canelo-Khan fight, at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Danny Garcia: Khan has the style to beat Canelo

garcia55By Dan Ambrose: WBC welterweight champion Danny Garcia thinks Amir Khan (31-3, 19 KOs) has the perfect style to hand WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs) a defeat in their upcoming fight on HBO pay-per-view on May 7.

Garcia sees the 29-year-old Khan as the more talented fighter than the heavier Canelo. Garcia rates Khan as a better fighter than Canelo despite his three previous defeats in his career. What Garcia doesn’t know how Khan will be able to handle the superior size and power of the 25-year-old Canelo, especially in the later rounds of their fight.

Garcia thinks Khan might have problems taking Canelo’s heavy shots in the last part of the fight.

Khan: It’s going to be amazing to be middleweight champion

Image: Khan: It's going to be amazing to be middleweight championBy Scott Gilfoid: Amir Khan (31-3, 19 KOs) firmly believes that he’ll be unseating WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs) on May 7 in their fight on HBO PPV.

Khan’s belief that he’ll be the new WBC middleweight champion is so strong that he’s now talking as if it’s already a proven fact rather than just a pipe dream on his part. That sad thing about Khan’s thoughts of being the new WBC champion is he’s probably going to wind up getting his hopes smashed apart by a right hand from the 25-year-old Canelo, and then wind up having to go back to another long four-year rebuilding phase in his career.

Khan says his power has tripled

1-CaneloKhanNYPC_Hoganphotos8By Dan Ambrose: In what could be a bad sign for WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, his opponent Amir “King” Khan is saying that he feels that his power is almost at triple strength of what it normally is because he’s eating more, not having to cut weight and he’s building his power through exercises.

Canelo and Khan will be facing each other in less than two months at a catch-weight of 155lbs on May 7 on HBO pay-per-view. The fight will take place at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
