Canelo’s trainer says they won’t fight GGG at 160

1-CaneloKhanNYPC_Hoganphotos9By Chris Williams: It looks like IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (34-0, 31 KOs) is going to need to swallow his pride and agree to some kind of catch-weight if he wants to fight WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs) in September for the WBC title.

Canelo’s trainer Eddy Reynoso says they absolutely will not fight Golovkin at 160. They feel comfortable at 155lbs, and even at 154. With that said, Reynoso says the negotiation will be very important between the two fighters. Golovkin might want to give in to Canelo if he really wants this fight.

Matthysse could fight in September on Canelo-Golovkin card

matthysse567676By Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya believes that 33-year-old Lucas Matthysse (37-4, 34 KOs9 could be ready to return to the ring later this year on a pay-per-view card in September. The PPV card would be Gennady Golovkin vs. the Golden Boy promoted Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, if that fight takes place then.

Matthysse suffered a fractured orbital bone in his 10th round knockout loss to unbeaten Ukrainian Viktor Postol last October in their fight for the vacant WBC light welterweight title. Matthysse was dropped in the 10th round after getting hit with a solid right hand to his left eye.

Matthysse then stayed down and was counted out. The injury to Matthysse’s eye has kept him out of action ever since. It’s unknown if he’ll be physically or mentally ready to fight in September or not.

Amir Khan: “I think I’ve got faster”

YouTube video

By Dan Ambrose: Amir Khan (31-3, 19 KOs) has steadily been bulking up ever since his May 7 fight against WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs) was finalized. Khan is clearly bigger than he’s ever been, and he looks nothing like the slim fighter that we all know since he turned pro in 2005.

Brook wants Khan to beat Canelo

1-IMG-20160317-WA0006By Scott Gilfoid: For all the back and forth talk that has gone on between Amir Khan (31-3, 19 KOs) and IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook (35-0, 24 KOs) over the years, you would think that Brook would want Khan to lose his fight against WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs) on May 7.

Instead of wanting Khan to lose, Brook is pulling for him to beat Canelo. Of course, Brook has selfish reasons for wanting Khan to win. He wants to then face Khan and beat him later on and get the glory from being the guy that beats Khan.

Brook doesn’t say whether he would be willing to move up to the full weight for the middleweight division to face Khan for the WBC 160lb belt. We do know that Brook’s promoter Eddie Hearn is interested in matching Brook up against IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin at a catch-weight of 157lbs. Nevertheless, perhaps the catch-weight only applies to Golovkin and not to Khan.

Hopkins talks Canelo-Khan fight

1-DSC07364By Dan Ambrose: Bernard Hopkins believes that WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez’s loss to Floyd Mayweather Jr. three years ago left a bad taste in his mouth from that experience. Canelo doesn’t want to go through that feeling again in his next fight against Amir Khan, and he’s going to be wanting to get him out of there fast so that he doesn’t have that same experience for a second time.

Hopkins sees Canelo as the fresher of the two fighters despite the fact that he has more fights under his belt than Khan. Perhaps one reason why Canelo comes across to Hopkins as the younger fighter of the two is because he’s not had to take too much punishment in his fights. Canelo is frequently been heavier than his opposition.

Catchweights, the bane of modern boxing?

1-DSC07269By Adam Godfrey: The definition of a catchweight, according to multiple online dictionaries scoured by yours truly are, frankly, rubbish. They do not convey the spirit of the reason why catchweights exist. You’ll have to confirm this for yourselves. The point is that anybody who has followed boxing for any amount of time should instinctively understand what a catchweight is as a matter of definition.

A catchweight is a weight agreed between two boxers or their negotiators that does not fall in line with usual weight stipulations assigned by a pair of boxer’s divisions. However, even this definition is lacking, as anybody who has an interest in the sweet science inherently understands the nuances of what a catchweight really is; it is a tool to bring two fighters together who would usually fight in different divisions so that they can face off on an even playing field.

Canelo-Khan undercard fights

canelo945By Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions is stacking the undercard for the May 7 Saul “Canelo” Alvarez vs. Amir Khan card on HBO pay-per-view. They were unable to get the heavyweight match-up between interim WBA champion Luis “The Real King Kong” Ortiz vs. Alexander Ustinov. The undercard is a mixed bag with the wrong guys fighting each other, and in the case of David Lemieux, he’s fight a junior middleweight rather than a middleweight in Glen Tapia. How do you have a PPV card on HBO where the first two fights involve fighters facing smaller guys in what appear to be mismatches? That just strikes me as wrong. Lemieux should have been put in with Curtis Stevens, and Canelo should be fighting at least a middleweight.

Nevertheless, they were able to get the following fights: Former IBF middleweight champion David Lemieux vs. Glen Tapia, welterweight Mauricio Herrera vs. Frankie Gomez, and former middleweight world title challenger Curtis Stevens vs. Patrick Teixeira.

Salka: Canelo will win the fight against Khan

1-DSC07279By Dan Ambrose: Super featherweight Rod Salka (21-3, 4 KOs), who is known for being the opponent for Danny Garcia in 2014 in a catch-weight, says that he sees WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs0 defeating Amir Khan (31-3, 19 KOs) in their fight on May 7.

Salka thinks Khan has the better boxing skills than Canelo. However, he still thinks Canelo is still going to get to Khan eventually and beat him. Salka is hoping that Khan can win the fight somehow, but he’s not willing to bet on that happening.

Canelo’s message to GGG

1-DSC07313By Dan Ambrose: WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez addressed WBC mandatory challenger Gennady “GGG” Golovkin directly during an interview this week, telling GGG that he’ll “eventually” get the fight against him, but it’s going to take time.

It’s unknown if Canelo is speaking in code by saying that it’ll eventually happen, which could be code for ‘it’s not going to happen in 2016, buddy.’ We’re going to see how serious Canelo is in wanting to defend his WBC middleweight title against Golovkin, because Canelo is going to need to make a decision about the Golovkin fight 15 days after his next title defense against Amir Khan on May 7.

Loeffler: Saunders an option for GGG if no Canelo or Khan fight

saunders43By Jeff Aranow: Tom Loeffler of K2 Promotions says WBO middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders is an option for his fighter IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin if he can’t get the winner of the May 7 fight between WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Amir Khan.

That’s the first priority for Golovkin because he wants the fight against the winner of the Canelo vs. Khan fight so that he has a chance to win the WBC 160lb title inside the ring rather than picking it up from the World Boxing Council stripping Canelo or Khan of the WBC belt for them having failed to face Golovkin.

“We would still be very interested in a fight there with Saunders,” Loeffler said to skysports.com. “If [Canelo or Khan] doesn’t happen, for whatever reason, then Saunders would be at the top of our list to unify the middleweight division. Gennady is the type of fighter that doesn’t care where he fights.”
