Haye: Khan has a massive shot of beating Canelo

khan234566By Dan Ambrose: Heavyweight contender David Haye is giving Amir Khan (31-3, 19 KOs) a great shot of unseating WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs) in their fight next month on May 7 on HBO PPV. Haye acknowledges that boxing fans believes he’s insane for picking such an underdog like the 29-year-old Khan, but he doesn’t care.

Haye, 35, just believes that Khan has the kinds of skills that will give the much heavier Canelo fits when the two fighters get inside the ring at the T-Mobile Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Arum: Pacquiao would beat Canelo like he did Oscar

arum83By Dan Ambrose: Top Rank promoter Bob Arum still believes a match can be made between his fighter Manny Pacquiao (57-6-2, 38 KOs) and WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs) if Pacquiao gets past Tim Bradley (33-1-1, 13 KOs) in their fight this Saturday night on HBO pay-per-view, and if Pacquiao chooses to continue his career.

Arum isn’t sure whether Pacquiao would decide on fighting Canelo or if he would elect to fight the lighter WBO light welterweight champion Terence Crawford in a fight at 140. Arum says he would back Pacquiao in whatever fighter he chooses he wants to fight.

Arum says Pacquiao would fight Canelo at 155

Arum44By Dan Ambrose: Top Rank promoter Bob Arum says his number one money maker former eight division world champion Manny Pacquiao (57-6-2, 38 KOs) would fight WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs) at 155lbs if that fight happens, Arum says he and Pacquiao couldn’t try and get the 25-year-old Canelo to come down in weight to fight because he feels it would be unfair to him by asking him to do this.

Pacquiao is supposedly retiring after his third fight against Tim Bradley (33-1-1, 13 KOs) on April 9 on HBO pay-per-view. However, with the way that Arum seemed to get really energized when asked about a hypothetical fight between Pacquiao and Canelo, it seems only obvious that the 84-year-old Arum REALLY wants that fight to happen.

Golovkin: Canelo can fight at 155, I’ll fight at 160

golovkin123By Dan Ambrose: It’s not looking like IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (34-0, 31 KOs) is going to give into Saul “Canelo” Alvarez’s wish to have his fight against Golovkin staged at a catch-weight of 155lbs later this year.

Golovkin says that if Canelo must fight at 155, then he’s welcome to go ahead and fight at that weight, but he’s going to fight at the full weight of 160lbs for the middleweight division. Golovkin will not be giving Canelo a handicap by melting down to 155lbs in order to give him the advantage, even though Golovkin says he’s been weighing in at 164 and 165 recently.

Golovkin would only need to drop 10 pounds to take the fight at 155 for Canelo. However, Golovkin is an old school fighter, and he doesn’t believe in fighting at catch-weights.

Khan: I won’t make mistakes against Canelo

1-CaneloKhanLAPC_Hoganphotos2By Dan Ambrose: Amir Khan (31-3, 19 KOs) blames his past three defeats on him making mistakes while trying to do too much against opponents he was expected to beat. Khan says he always felt like he had to take the lead in his fights by pushing a fast pace against opponents he was expected to handily beat.

This caused him to take more risks in order to impress the fans and show them that he was the better fighter. But in the case of his May 7 fight against WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs), Khan is the underdog in this fight and he feels like he doesn’t need to take any chances. Khan says he knows better than to take a bunch of risks because he knows it could end with him getting knocked out.

De La Hoya: Lemieux-Tapia winner could face Canelo

Boxing: Golovkin vs LemieuxBy Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya revealed earlier today that the winner of the May 7th fight between former IBF middleweight champion David Lemieux (34-3, 31 KOs) and junior middleweight Glen Tapia (23-2, 15 KOs) could be in line to face WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs) in the future at some point. It would be an impossible situation for Lemieux to fight Canelo in his special weight class of 155lbs. Lemieux couldn’t even make the recent catch-weight of 163lbs for his last fight. How is he going to melt down to Canelo’s 155lb weight division?

Judging by how things went for Lemieux in his recent fight against Gennady “GGG” Golovkin, you would have to think that the fight will be taking place soon. Golden Boy can’t afford to wait too long before they match Lemieux with Canelo.

Khan still undecided about whether to fight Golovkin

khan12344By Dan Ambrose: Amir Khan (31-3, 19 KOs) is totally confident that he’ll send the younger 25-year-old Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs) down to his second career defeat on May 7 in their fight on HBO PPV. Khan says he’s not going to let a younger, smaller fighter like Canelo beat him. What Khan isn’t sure about is whether he should keep the WBC middleweight title he wins off Golden Boy Promotion’s flagship fighter Canelo or not.

If Khan chooses to keep the WBC strap, it’s going to come with a great responsibility because he’ll need to defend the belt against the WBC #1 mandatory challenger Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (34-0, 31 KOs) in his very next fight. Khan says he’s not sure whether he’ll do that or not. He wants to beat Canelo, and then make a decision with his team based on how he performed in the fight against Canelo.

Hearn: Khan is going to get knocked out by Canelo

hearn44444By Dan Ambrose: Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Sport thinks Amir Khan (31-3, 19 KOs) is going to taste defeat against WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs) in their fight on May 7.

Hearn, who promotes IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook, believes that Khan will have his moments early in the fight, and will likely out-box the 25-year-old Canelo. However, at some point in the fight, Khan will need to exchange shots with Canelo, and when that happens, Hearn expects Khan to get knocked out by one of Canelo’s heavy shots.

Hearn notes that Floyd Mayweather Jr. was able to out-box Canelo in their fight in 2013, but that wasn’t Khan. That was Mayweather. Hearn doubts that Khan will be able to do the same thing that Mayweather did against the younger Canelo three years ago.
