Saunders: I’ll fight Golovkin

saunders97By Scott Gilfoid: WBO middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders (23-0, 12 KOs) says he’ll gladly give IBF/IBO/WBA/WBC middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (35-0, 32 KOs) the fight he wants if he’s paid rightly, and if he has a say so on the venue for the fight. Saunders, 26, says he would even come to the United States to fight Golovkin if he’s paid well enough.

Saunders says he was contacted by Golovkin’s management after he won the WBO title last December in beating champion Andy Lee. However, Saunders says all he was offered for the Golovkin fight was $1 million to 1.5 million. Saunders didn’t see that as a lot of money for a unification fight against a popular fighter like Golovkin.

Boxing Fans must force the Canelo vs. Golovkin fight

Image: Boxing Fans must force the Canelo vs. Golovkin fightBy Robbie Bannatyne: Boxing is a business, a sport where financial imperatives take precedence over the principles of elite athletic competition where the best should be duty bound to face the best.

The murky waters of the boxing world were muddied further with the news that Canelo has vacated his WBC middleweight title, in what seems to many, a naked attempt to navigate his way around a fight with mandatory challenger, Gennady “GGG” Golovkin.

Golovkin: Who do my fans want to see me fight next?

golovkin633By Dan Ambrose: Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (35-0, 32 KOs) added another belt to his fast accumulating collection of middleweight titles with the addition of the WBC 160lb strap, courtesy of Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. Golovkin picked up the WBC title the easy way when Canelo chose to give the title up after the World Boxing Council gave him and his promoters Golden Boy Promotions a deadline of May 24 to be done with the negotiations with Golovkin or else they would send it to a purse bid.

Canelo chose to vacate at this point, a move that many boxing fans see as a cowardly fight ducking move on his part. Supposedly, Canelo and Golden Boy Promotions are still interested in negotiating a fight with Golovkin.

Canelo is NOT a chicken!

Image: Canelo is NOT a chicken!By Manuel Perez: Boxing fans have been attacking Saul “Canelo” Alvarez ever since he gave up his WBC middleweight title on Wednesday. The fans are calling the super star Canelo a chicken and a ducker because he gave up his WBC title after being given a deadline for his negotiations with interim WBC middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin for their proposed fight. Let me make this clear; Canelo is not a chicken!

Canelo is a smart business man and he made the right move by choosing to give up the WBC middleweight title rather than be pressured with artificial deadlines created by the World Boxing Council for him to complete the negotiations with Golovkin.

Is Canelo ducking Golovkin?

canelo6463By Gerardo Granados: What is the meaning of traditions in pro boxing? Are we as fight fans willing to accept drastic changes in the attitude of prize fighters? Are we the older fight fans condemn to only have nostalgic memories of past brave sons of boxing?

By now, all boxing fans must know that Canelo Alvarez vacated his WBC middle strap. Yeah sure, Saul stated that he did it to help out with the negotiations, because a dead line was affecting them, later on he also stated he would fight Golovkin but only under his terms. Wasn’t Alvarez given many extensions by the WBC to fight Golovkin and as a result, he got the chance to fight against Amir Khan with the mere promise to fight Golovkin next?

Golovkin with backup plan if Canelo fight doesn’t happen

golovkin823By Dan Ambrose: Newly crowned WBC middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin and his promoter Tom Loeffler are still going to attempt to negotiate a fight against Mexican star Saul “Canelo” Alvarez despite him giving up the WBC title today. The main reason Golovkin was interested in fighting the 25-year-old Canelo was because he had the WBC 160lb title that he wanted.

Canelo chose to give the WBC belt up without a fight on Wednesday, effectively handing it over to GGG in a move that some fans see as submissive move. Canelo talked boldly in his statement to the media about why he was giving up his WBC title. Canelo even said this in his statement: “I fear no man. Never has that been more true than today. I will fight GGG, and I will beat GGG, but I will not be forced into the ring by artificial deadlines.”

Actions speak louder than words. If Canelo was truly unafraid of Golovkin, you would think that he would hold onto the WBC title and stick it out in the negotiations, even if that meant that it had to go to a purse bid on May 24.

WBC recognizes Gennady Golovkin as new 160lb champion

golovkin633By Dan Ambrose: It didn’t take the World Boxing Council long to recognize Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (35-0, 32 KOs) as the new WBC middleweight champion earlier on Wednesday. Moments after Saul “Canelo” Alvarez made an announcement that he was vacating his WBC title, the WBC announced that Golovkin is now the new WBC middleweight champion.

It didn’t take long at all for the WBC to give Golovkin the belt. It’s a good thing because it would have been a tragedy if Golovkin had to fight Canelo at a catch-weight in order to fight for the vacant WBC middleweight title.

The Pound for Pound List analyzed; Swiftly

garcia55By The Sandman: With Floyd “Money” Mayweather Jr. now retired, the sport speculates who will be the next best pound for pound fighter. He is already here; Danny “Swift” Garcia.

There is no other fighter that has a better resume than Danny Garcia. Danny Garcia started his career fighting tough opponents on a moment’s notice. Imagine the Errol Spence and Phil Le Greco fight, where Phil Le Greco was given 2 weeks to prepare. Danny Garcia was Phil Le Greco, fighting difficult fighters like Nate Campbell, on a short notice. The difference is that Danny Garcia continued winning.

The winning streak continued with his first high profile fight was against the Mexican legend, Erik Morales.

Canelo vacates WBC title to have more time to negotiate Golovkin fight

Image: Canelo vacates WBC title to have more time to negotiate Golovkin fightBy Dan Ambrose: In a statement released moments ago, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez announced that he’s vacating his WBC middleweight title so that he can have more time to negotiate a fight against interim WBC middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin without the fast approaching deadline that the World Boxing Council had put in place before a scheduled May 24 purse bid.

Canelo says he’s still interested in negotiating the fight with Golovkin. He just doesn’t want the pressure from the WBC in their purse bid. The question now is whether Canelo was serious about still wanting to negotiate the fight with Golovkin. The fact that Canelo gave up the WBC title without asking for an extension is an odd one because the WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman surely would have given Canelo an extension if he had asked for it.

Statements from Canelo Alvarez and Oscar De La Hoya

Image: Statements from Canelo Alvarez and Oscar De La HoyaLOS ANGELES (May 18, 2016) – Ring Magazine and Lineal Middleweight World Champion Canelo Alvarez today issued the following statement:

“After much consideration, today, I instructed my team at Golden Boy Promotions to continue negotiating a fight with Gennady ‘GGG’ Golovkin and to finalize a deal as quickly as possible. I also informed the WBC that I will vacate its title. For the entirety of my career, I have taken the fights that no one wanted because I fear no man. Never has that been more true than today. I will fight ‘GGG,’ and I will beat ‘GGG’ but I will not be forced into the ring by artificial deadlines. I am hopeful that by putting aside this ticking clock, the two teams can now negotiate this fight, and ‘GGG’ and I can get in the ring as soon as possible and give the fans the fight they want to see.”
