Stevenson conquers Bika, is Kovalev next?

stevenson2By Allan Fox: Making his 5th defense of his World Boxing Council 175 pound title, Adonis Stevenson (26-1, 21 KOs) was victorious in defeating former WBC 168 pound champion Sakio Bika (32-7-3, 21 KOs) by a unanimous 12 round decision on Saturday afternoon at the Pepsi Coliseum, Quebec City, Quebec, Canada.

Stevenson, 37, unloaded everything but the kitchen sink in the fight in vying to become the first fighter to ever stop the 35-year-old Bika, but it wasn’t meant to be. Bika visited the canvas twice in the fight. He took Stevenson’s best shots and kept coming forward with a determined look on his face.

Stevenson can’t afford to look past Bika, because this is probably the best fighter that Stevenson has ever fought before. Stevenson has fought better boxers than Bika in the past like Chad Dawson and bigger punchers like Tony Bellew, but none of the opponents that Stevenson has faced had the punch resistance and the toughness that Bika possesses.

Stevenson, 37, says he wants the fight to be a toe-to-toe war with Bika.

With the way that Bika fights, I don’t think Stevenson will have any other choice but to make the fight a war. Even if he wants to play it safe by standing on the outside to pot shot all night long, Bika is going to crowd him a lot in this fight and nail him with big looping bombs.

Bika, 35, acknowledges that Stevenson can really punch, but he feels he’s going to be able to take anything he can dish out. But Bika has doubts whether Stevenson will be able to take his own punching power when the two of them get inside the ring.

Stevenson, 37, is one of the older top fighters in the light heavyweight division, but he still has a lot of hand speed to go along with his impressive punching power. Whether he can score a knockout over a fighter with a tough chin like Stevenson is something we’re going to find out on Saturday.

Stevenson didn’t say much about Kovalev’s win other than him just not being all too impressed with what he saw in that fight from the Russian fighter.

If Stevenson, 37, is going to score a knockout over Bika then he’s going to need to put his own chin on the line in this fight, because Bika isn’t someone like Chad Dawson who will fold up the first time he gets with a single hard shot.
