Roy Jones Jr. vs. Rodney Moore tonight

jones5

By Patrick McHugh: Roy Jones Jr. will be continuing his long 27-year pro career tonight in his fight against cruiserweight Rodney Moore at the Pensacola Bay Center in Pensacola, Florida. Like in his last fight against Vyron Phillips, who was making his pro debut, the 47-year-old Jones (63-9, 46 KOs) has what looks to be a sure thing win against his journeyman opponent Moore (17-11-2, 7 KOs).

Jones doesn’t plan on retiring after the fight with the 40-year-old Moore unless he tastes defeat. He doesn’t want to retire just yet. Jones’ love for the sport is too strong for him to walk away from boxing just yet.

It’s unclear how much money Jones is making from his mismatches against hopelessly over-matched fighters like Moore and Phillips, but it must be enough for him to want to continue his career.

Ward: I’m a combination of Mayweather, Jones Jr and Hopkins

ward4555

By Patrick McHugh: Andre Ward (30-0, 15 KOs) broke down the guys that he’s patterned his fighting style after last night following his 12 round decision win over Alexander Brand at the Oracle Arena in Oakland, California. Ward said that he’s a combination of Floyd Mayweather Jr., Roy Jones Jr. and Bernard Hopkins. It was interesting to hear Ward explain where he got his fighting style.

Hopkins is someone that jumps out at you when you look at how Ward fought last night and in his previous fights. Mayweather and Jones Jr. are fighters that completely different from how Ward fights like. I don’t see any of those fighters’ styles inside Ward’s style.

Bradley: Kell Brook has an chance against Golovkin

Image: Bradley: Kell Brook has an chance against Golovkin

By Dan Ambrose: Both Roy Jones Jr. and Tim Bradley both are on the same side in their belief that undefeated 30-year-old IBF welterweight champion Kell “Special K” Brook (36-0, 25 KOs) has a good chance of beating knockout artist IBF/IBO/WBA/WBC middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (35-0, 32 KOs) on September 10 at the O2 Arena in London, England.

Bradley takes a rather simplistic outlook to the Golovkin-Brook fight by pointing out that Brook has two hands like GGG, and ties his shoes like him. In other words, Brook has a chance because he breathes oxygen, drinks water, has two eyes, a nose and ears. He exists on earth, so therefore he has a chance.

Roy Jones Jr. says Crawford would give Errol Spence Jr. trouble

jones8

By Dan Ambrose: You can include HBO commentator Roy Jones Jr. being firmly a true believer in WBC/WBO light welterweight champion Terence “Bud” Crawford (29-0, 20 KOs) after his 12 round unanimous decision last night over former WBC 140lb champion Viktor Postol (28-1, 12 KOs) in their fight on HBO pay-per-view. Jones not only sees the 28-year-old Crawford as the No.1 fighter at light welterweight now, but he also thinks he would give major problems to the top three welterweights in the division, including unbeaten #2 IBF Errol Spence Jr. (20-0, 17 KOs).

Crawford beat the one-dimensional and quite slow Postol by a 12 round unanimous decision by the scores of 118-107, 117-108 and 118-107. The Crawford vs. Postol fight took place at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nwevada. The fight was televised on HBO PPV for $49.99 to $59.99. For boxing fans wanting entertainment/excitement, the gave very little of that due in part to Crawford’s constant movement, clinching and Postol’s inability to cut off the ring to force Crawford to fight.

Roy Jones Jr. vs. Rodney Moore on August 13

jones5

By Allan Fox: 47-year-old former four division world champion Roy Jones Jr. (63-9, 46 KOs) will be back inside the ring next month on August 13 against 40-year-old journeyman Rodney Moore (17-11-2, 7 KOs) in Pensacola, Florida.

This figures to be a mismatch for Jones Jr., as Moore hasn’t exactly been the busiest of fighters during the last 13-years of his career. Moore has lost his last nine fights since 2003. He was inactive from 2003 to 2005, and then from 2005 to 2012.

Jones expects Canelo to avoid Golovkin fight for Pacquiao payday

golovkin901By Dan Ambrose: HBO commentator Roy Jones Jr. doubts that WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez will choose to fight interim WBC champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin if Canelo can get past his fight in two weeks against Amir Khan, because Jones believes that Canelo will be facing Manny Pacquiao for much more money. Golovkin looked sensational last night in dispatching Dominic Wade (18-1, 12 KOs) in two rounds in a fight televised by HBO Boxing from The Forum in Inglewood, California. The win by Golovkin may have scared Canelo off unfortunately.

There’s little doubt that Pacquiao’s promoters at Top Rank would make the fight between Pacquiao and Canelo if the Filipino star chooses to return to the ring this year. However, Pacquiao is now retired and is supposed to be going into a life of politics in the Philippines.

Pacquiao is not likely going to come back to the sport to fight a dangerous opponent like Canelo, who would have at least a 20-pound weight advantage over him, possibly even as 25lb weight advantage. That would be an unreal circus-like fight.

Roy Jones Jr. thinks Canelo shouldn’t fight Golovkin now

canelo555By Dan Ambrose: Boxing great Roy Jones Jr. thinks it makes a lot of sense for WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez to take the bigger money fights against guys like Manny Pacquiao than taking a dangerous fight against IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin. Jones doesn’t think the fight against Golovkin will bring in $50 million for Canelo like a fight against Pacquiao.

“I couldn’t milk the cow like Mayweather because I didn’t have the patience…same thing except there’s one x-factor…the x-factor for Canelo…I can make this $50 million and then fight Triple G,” said Jones to Fighthype.com.

Jones Jr: It’s unfair for Ward to fight Kovalev right now

1-WardBarrera_Hoganphotos3By Dan Ambrose: HBO commentator Roy Jones Jr. says it’s unfair for boxing fans to put pressure on former WBA/WBC super middleweight champion Andre Ward (29-0, 15 KOs) for him to go and fight unbeaten IBF/WBA/WBO light heavyweight champion Sergey “Krusher” Kovalev right now because he thinks Ward should be able to have another tune-up to get as sharp as possible before he takes the fight.

Jones points out that Ward just came off of a nine-month layoff from the sport to beat Sullivan Barrera (17-1, 12 KOs), and he thinks he needs at least one more tune-up before he gets inside the ring with Kovalev.
