Warren wants Burns to fight again before Christmas

Image: Warren wants Burns to fight again before ChristmasBy Scott Gilfoid: Promoter Frank Warren is interested in seeing new World Boxing Organization super featherweight champion Ricky Burns (29-2, 7 KO’s) back in action before Christmas. Burns defeated WBO super featherweight champion Roman Martinez (24-1-1, 15 KO’s) by a narrow 12 round unanimous decision on Saturday night at the Kelvin Hall, in Glasgow, Scotland. The margin of victory was pretty close, with the 27-year-old Burns getting the win by the scores of 115-112, 115-112 and 115-113. I’d like to see a rematch in Puerto Rico, because all those screaming Scottish fans, singing songs and chanting incessantly, really seemed to help Burns raise his game. If this fight had taken place in a neutral venue, I think Martinez would have won it. As it was, Burns won the bout by a razor thin margin.

Burns-Martinez: Ricky shocks the world, so where does he go from here?

Image: Burns-Martinez: Ricky shocks the world, so where does he go from here?By Peter Wells: Firstly i’d like to congratulate Ricky Burns on a sensational performance last night in front of a great supportive crowd. Burns can now hold his head high being 1 of 3 Great British world champions. It was very hard to see a way to give this fight to Ricky before hand, but after that performance it’s hard to understand why we doubted him. Like so many fighters, when they move up in class it brings the best out of them, and that happened again last night.

Image: Martinez-Burns: Ricky takes a huge jump up in class By Peter Wells: At the age of 27 Scottish boxer Ricky Burns finds himself at a position he never fought he’d be at. The Commonwealth Super Featherweight champion has managed to get a WBO Super Featherweight title shot, and not only that he has got the shot at home in Glasgow.

Burns is just 1 of 3 Great British fighters to have world title challenges coming up, Jason Booth takes on IBF Super Bantamweight champ Steve Molitor next week while Rendall Munroe takes on Japanese World Boxing Council (WBC) Super Bantamweight champion in October, and also Munroe is the only British challenger who has to travel away from home.

Nicky Cook v Roman Martinez – Martinez TKO4

cook4343By James Hughes: As well as former champions, this card also went badly for reigning champions; Nicky Cook followed Bradley Pryce out of the door early on the way to losing his title to the mandatory challenger, Roman ‘Rocky’ Martinez. Cook was unable to make a voluntary defence of his title late last year, so he ended up facing as tough a first defence as any fighter is likely to get. Unfortunately, it’ll be his only defence title.
