Image: Martinez-Burns: Ricky takes a huge jump up in class By Peter Wells: At the age of 27 Scottish boxer Ricky Burns finds himself at a position he never fought he’d be at. The Commonwealth Super Featherweight champion has managed to get a WBO Super Featherweight title shot, and not only that he has got the shot at home in Glasgow.

Burns is just 1 of 3 Great British fighters to have world title challenges coming up, Jason Booth takes on IBF Super Bantamweight champ Steve Molitor next week while Rendall Munroe takes on Japanese World Boxing Council (WBC) Super Bantamweight champion in October, and also Munroe is the only British challenger who has to travel away from home.

The champion tonight is very familiar with fighting in Britain, where he won the world title off Nicky Cook 18 months ago. Both fighters are 27 but the Puerto Rican has much more experience at top level. He’s 24-0-1(15), but is much more powerful than his record suggests. He was being beaten by Nicky Cook before a peach of a left hook caught Cook by surprise.

Martinez is not entirely impressed with having to travel; being the challenger he believes Burns should be the away fighter. Rocky as he is known as does not need the crowd to influence the judges; he lets his fists do that. Martinez is on fire when he makes his opponent trade with him.

One has the feeling this could turn out like Mitchell-Katsidis, where you have Mitchell who tries to box on the outside but the on coming fighters ends up being too much and once the trade game starts it’s all over.

The question is can Burns stay busy enough for 12 rounds to keep Rocky off him? He could crumble under the pressure or he could just loose his way early.

As much as I want Burns to pull it off, there is no doubt that Ricky Burns will fight brave, he’ll look good for a few rounds but the intense pressure from Rocky will break him. Expect Burns to finish on his back after 8 rounds.
