By Dan Ambrose: Former WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia (31-0, 18 KOs) will be taking a step up in competition this Saturday night when he faces Robert Guerrero (33-3-1, 18 KOs) for the vacant WBC welterweight title at the Staples Center, in Los Angeles, California.

Normally, this wouldn’t be considered a step up for a fighter to be facing a fading fighter like Guerrero, but for Garcia, it has to be seen as a step up. Garcia has been fighting guys like Paulie Malignaggi and lightweight Rod Salka recently in record-padding fights.

By Dan Ambrose: The struggling Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero (33-3-1, 18 KOs) will be trying to turn his career around this Saturday against unbeaten and very lucky Danny Garcia (31-0, 18 KOs) at the Stables Center in Los Angeles, California. Guerrero is seen by a lot of fans as the B-side victim in this fight against Garcia, and people doubt that he can win the fight. The Guerrero vs. Garcia fight will be televised on Premier Boxing Champions on Fox.

The two fighters will be facing off for the vacant WBC welterweight title that was recently stripped from Floyd Mayweather Jr. It would be a big feather in Guerrero’s cap if he could beat Garcia and prove the doubters wrong in this fight. It’s unfortunate but, Guerrero has not looked good in his last four fights.

By Dan Ambrose: Ruben Garcia, the trainer/father of #6 WBC Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero (33-3-1, 18 KOs), took a shot at #2 WBC Danny Garcia (31-0, 18 KOs) this past week in saying he’s not Puerto Rican and he doesn’t know what he is.

Garcia’s parents are Puerto Rican, but he was born in the United States. Garcia and Guerrero will be facing each other this Saturday night on Premier Boxing Champions on Fox at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California.

“We got a lot of Latinos, Chicanos and all the Mexicanos and all the haters, especially all the haters,” Ruben said to Martin Gallegos. They’re going to find out when we win and they’re going to come from us, bro. All the haters and the doubters. I think they’re [the fans] going for us. This guy [Garcia] doesn’t speak a Latin word or Puerto Rico. Like they say, he’s not a real Puerto Rican. He just says he is but he’s not. I don’t know what he is. We haven’t figured that out yet. He’s got to find it out. It’s going to be his nightmare. He’s going to figure it out quick,” Ruben said.

Guerrero will need to show the boxing world that they were wrong to see him as a washed up fighter that was only picked out for the 27-year-old Garcia in order to get a sure thing title. With the way that Guerrero has looked recently in his last four fights, it is hard to argue in his favor for not being an over-the-hill fighter.

By Dan Ambrose: The WBC did Danny Garcia and Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero (33-3-1, 18 KOs) a huge gift by allowing them to fight for their vacant WBC welterweight title on January 23.

On Tuesday of this week, the WBC announced that they were letting the Garcia-Guerrero fight be for the vacant WBC 147lb strap. The move let Guerrero skip over four higher ranking contenders in the WBC rankings.

By Dan Ambrose: The World Boxing Council has revealed that unbeaten #2 WBC Danny Garcia (31-0, 18 KOs) and #6 WBC Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero (33-3, 18 KOs) will be fighting for the vacant WBC welterweight [147 pound] title when they face each other on January 23 on Premier Boxing Champions on Fox Sports from the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California. This WBC stripped Floyd Mayweather Jr. of the WBC 147lb title due to him retiring. This past week, the WBA rejected the idea of having the Garcia-Guerrero fight as a title fight for their WBA “super” welterweight title. However, the WBC didn’t feel the same way and is allowing Garcia and Guerrero to fight for their vacant WBC 147lb title.

In addition to Guerrero and Garcia fighting for the vacant WBC welterweight title, the WBC will make the Jermell Charlo vs. John Jackson fight be for the vacant WBC junior middleweight title. This fight makes more sense because Charlo is ranked #1 by the WBC and Jackson #2.

The WBC’s rankings for 154 is a little mixed up, because you can make an argument that Jackson does not rate a No.2 ranking after his knockout loss to Andy Lee.

Guerrero, 32, surprised a lot of people recently with his comments about him believing in his mind that Mexicans are better at the sport than Puerto Ricans. The comments have put a lot of pressure on the shoulders of Guerrero, whose career looks to be sinking fast with him having lost 2 out of his last 4 fights.
