By Sean McDaniel: A potential fight between WBC junior middleweight champion Saul Alvarez (36-0-1, 26 KO’s) and two-time former world champion Ricardo Mayorga (29-8-1, 23 KO’s) is rumored to be taking place in June. Mayorga, 38, was recently stopped in the 12th round by WBA junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto in his last fight on March 12th. After the bout, Mayorga spoke of retirement and wanting to look for new profession.

Cotto-Mayorga brings in good PPV numbers
By Jason Kim: Last Saturday night’s pay-per-view attraction between WBA junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (36-2, 29 KO’s) and 38-year-old former two division world champion Ricardo Mayorga (29-8-1, 23 KO’s) brought in good PPV numbers, says Dan Rafael of ESPN. Rafael is reporting that the Cotto-Mayorga fight brought in between 200-250 thousand buys. These are really good numbers for a match-up between an older fighter like Mayorga and Cotto.
Mayorga not retiring, says he has three fights planned
By Dan Ambrose: 38-year-old Ricardo Mayorga (29-8-1, 23 KO’s) has changed his mind about retiring from boxing after his 12th round stoppage loss to WBA junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto last Saturday night. After the fight, Mayorga said that he was going to start looking for a job as he was retiring. However, Mayorga has suddenly had a change of mind and says he’s got “Two easy fights and one hard fight” according to primerahora.
Cotto beat Mayorga the only way he could by fighting defensively
By Dan Ambrose: Since his recent hard fought 12th round knockout win over the tough Ricardo Mayorga last Saturday night at the MGM Grand, in Las Vegas, Nevada, there has been a lot of questions about why WBA junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (36-1, 29 KO’s) didn’t fight more aggressively in the fight to try and take Mayorga out earlier.
Cotto might have lost to Mayorga if not for Steward
By Tim Nielsen: WBA junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto likely would have been knocked out or badly beaten up by 38-year-old Ricardo Mayorga if not for his new trainer Emanuel Steward, who has worked wonders in making Cotto a more defensively oriented fighter. Last Saturday night, Cotto took a lot of punishment early on from the determined Mayorga, as he tore into Cotto in rounds one through four.
Cotto beats Mayorga, but fails to show he deserves Pacquiao rematch
By Jason Kim: WBA junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (36-2, 29 KO’s) did what he had to do to stop 38-year-old Ricardo Mayorga (29-8-1, 23 KO’s) in the 12th round last Saturday night in Cotto’s tune-up bout at the MGM Grand, in Las Vegas, Nevada. Fighting for the first time since last June, Cotto faced an aging Mayorga, who came into the fight a whopping 10-1 underdog. Mayorga didn’t fight like someone with those kinds of odds going against him, as he really took the fight to the much younger 30-year-old Cotto and had him on the run for most of the fight.
Cotto gets all he can handle from Mayorga
By Dan Ambrose: Coming into the fight a huge favorite, WBA junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (36-2, 29 KO’s) failed to prove that he deserved to be a big favorite by struggling to beat 38-year-old Ricardo Mayorga (29-8-1, 23 KO’s) by a 12th round stoppage last Saturday night in Las Vegas, Nevada. Indeed, the fight was stopped after Mayorga injured his left hand when he apparently got it tangled with one of Cotto’s own shots. Mayorga landed the better combinations in the fight and got the most applause during the night’s action.
Cotto vs. Mayorga: Fight or Circus?
By Laz Perez: What we witnessed last night with WBA junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto stopping 38-year-old Ricardo Mayorga in the 12th has to be one of the most eye raising incidents in recent boxing history. What was expected to be an all-out brawl and exchange of overhand rights and looping left hooks to the body was more of a circus than a fight. Set at $40+ and on Showtime PPV with Hall of Famers Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield and other Hollywood stars and of course a Miguel Cotto event would no be complete without the ghost of Christmas Past, Antonio Margarito.
Will Cotto mentally crumble under Mayorga’s brutal attacks tonight?
By Dan Ambrose: We just saw how WBA junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (35-2, 28 KO’s) was dominated by challenger Ricardo Mayorga (29-7-1, 23 KO’s) in their press conferences together. It got so bad that Cotto wouldn’t even stand and look Mayorga in the eyes for the traditional face-off photo sessions. That’s really bad. Mayorga in turn sees this as a sign of cowardice, and says he’s going to knock Cotto out. He offered a rose at their last press conference, treating him with contempt.
Mayorga hoping to get a Pacquiao fight if he destroys Cotto tonight
By Dan Ambrose: Top Rank promoter Bob Arum has already said that the winner of tonight’s fight between WBA junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (35-2, 28 KO’s) and challenger Ricardo Mayorga (29-7-1, 23 KO’s) may get a shot against his cash cow Manny Pacquiao in the near future. But will Arum actually allow Pacquiao to fight Mayroga, a non-Top Rank fighter? I have my doubts. I think it makes for a good soundbite Arum talking about possibly matching Mayorga up with Pacquiao if he beats Cotto, but I just can’t see that happening.
