Canelo has to be favored over Cotto, says Malignaggi

Image: Canelo has to be favored over Cotto, says MalignaggiBy Dan Ambrose: With two months to go before the November 21st clash between WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (40-4, 33 KOs) and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KOs), there is a great deal of indecision about which of these two fighters will emerge as the winner in their bout on HBO pay-per-view from the Mandalay Bay Hotel & Casino, Events Center, in Las Vegas, Nevada.

While some boxing fans believe that Cotto’s experience and brute power will be enough for him to get the victory, other fans see the 25-year-old Canelo’s youth and size being too much for the 34-year-old Cotto.

Paulie Malignaggi vs. Laszlo Fazekas on September 26th

malignaggi454By Jim Dower: With two knockout losses in his last two fights, former two division world champion Paulie Malignaggi (33-7, 7 KOs) will be back in the ring this month against 25-year-old Hungarian journeyman Laszlo Fazekas (27-21-1, 17 KOs) in a scheduled eight round bout at the Teatro Principe, in Milan, Lombardia, Italy.

It’s unclear what Malignaggi, 34, hopes to gain in moving this far down the foot chain in terms of his opposition. Malignaggi was stopped in the 9th round by former WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia last August at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Malignaggi to fight on September 26th in Italy

malignaggi133By Allan Fox: Former two division world champion Paulie Malignaggi (33-7, 7 KOs) will be back inside the ring later this month against an opponent still to be determined in a six round fight on September 26th at the Teatro Principe, Milan, Lombardia, Italy.

Given that Malignaggi will be fighting a six round fight, it’s likely that he’ll be facing a weaker 2nd or 3rd tier fighter rather than a top tier guy. But even against a weaker opponent, you just never know what you’re going to get with Malignaggi at this point in his career. He’s up there in age and he’s not a puncher. Any fight could turn out to be a difficult one for him.

Danny Garcia interested in Thurman and Porter fights

EW5G6839(Photo credit: Lucas Noonan/Premier Boxing Champions) By Dan Ambrose: Fresh off of his 9th round stoppage win over high level journeyman Paulie Malignaggi (33-7, 7 KOs) last Saturday night, former 140lb champion Danny Garcia (31-0, 18 KOs) says he’s willing to face WBA welterweight champion Keith Thurman or former IBF 147lb champ Shawn Porter next, as long as his adviser Al Haymon is interested in making one of those fights for him.

Garcia says he’s willing to do whatever Haymon wants to do. That could be a good thing or could be a bad thing if Haymon elects to continue to be very strategic in the types of fights he makes for Garcia.

Malignaggi: I’m probably not going to fight again

5H6A1120(Photo credit: Lucas Noonan/Premier Boxing Champions) By Dan Ambrose: It looks like we’ve seen the last of former two division world champion Paulie Malignaggi (33-7, 7 KOs) following his 9th round stoppage loss to former light welterweight champion Danny Garcia (31-0, 18 KOs) tonight on Premier Boxing Champions on ESPN from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Malignaggi offered very little resistance to the 27-year-old Garcia, and about all he did was move around the ring trying to avoid getting hit. Malignaggi said after the fight that he thinks that he won’t be fighting again.

Danny Garcia stops Malignaggi in ugly mismatch

5H6A1261(Photo credit: Lucas Noonan/Premier Boxing Champions) By Dan Ambrose: In a mismatch along the lines of the Rod Salka fight, former light welterweight champ Danny Garcia (31-0, 18 KOs) battered and beat a bloody over-the-hill 34-year-old Paulie Malignaggi (33-7, 7 KOs) by a 9th round TKO tonight on Premier Boxing Champions on ESPN from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

This fight was really sad to watch if you were a Malignaggi fan because he had absolutely nothing to keep Garcia off of him. Even when Malignaggi landed cleanly, he had no power to speak of and Garcia was able to just walk through the shots as if they were nothing.

Weights: Garcia 146.6, Malignaggi 146.8; Jacobs 159.8, Mora 159.2

EW5G0358(Photo credit: Lucas Noonan/Premier Boxing Champions) By Dan Ambrose: Former WBC 140lb champion Danny Garcia (30-0, 17 KOs) made weight on Friday for his welterweight clash against Showtime analyst and part-time boxer Paulie Malignaggi (33-6, 7 KOs) for their fight on Saturday night on Premier Boxing Champions on ESPN from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Garcia weighed in at 146.6lbs. For his part, Malignaggi weight in slightly heavier at 146.8lbs. Malignaggi looked thinner than Garcia, but surprisingly he was heavier.

This is pretty much the end of the line for Malignaggi if he loses this fight. He’ll still likely get fights against top contenders if he gets beaten, but a defeat here will make it impossible for Malignaggi to get a crack at a world title because he’ll not be ranking in the top 15.
