Does Mayweather need to piggy-back on popular fighters like Hatton and De La Hoya to sell tickets?

By Dave Lahr: Judging by how poorly the ticket sales have gone fore Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Juan Manuel Marquez bout for September 19th, I’m starting to wonder whether Mayweather is in fact a huge pay-per-view attraction. Marquez may not be a big star, but he’s certainly popular enough to create a big PPV gate if he were matched against Oscar De La Hoya or say Ricky Hatton.

De La Hoya: “I’m Convinced He [Marquez] Will Win This Fight”

marquez4435543By Jason Kim: Oscar De La Hoya is completely sold on Juan Manuel Marquez being able to pull off an upset on September 19th against Floyd Mayweather Jr. at the Staples Center, in Los Angeles, California, saying in a Thursday conference call “I’m convinced he [Juan Manuel Marquez] will win this fight.” De La Hoya was especially impressed with Marquez after seeing how he packed on nine pounds of muscle to his small lightweight frame, and is now weighting close to the 144 pound catch weight limit.

De La Hoya feels that the two years that Mayweather has been out of the ring, along with Floyd’s rib injury will lead to Marquez, 36, pulling off the upset at the MGM Grand, in Las Vegas, Nevada.

News – De La Hoya Plans on Staying Retired; Green gunning for Froch

By Jason Kim: Oscar De La Hoya (39-6, 30 KO’s) says he doesn’t plan on coming out of retirement, and that he will be moving from Puerto Rico to Los Angeles to be closer to his company Golden Boy Promotions, according to the Daily news. De La Hoya is said to be happy in retirement, and still somewhat in shock that he’s not competing anymore, saying “I still say to myself, ‘wow, I’m not fighting ever again.”
