De La Hoya: Mayweather isn’t invincible; Canelo could dethrone him

de la hoya2By Dan Ambrose: Oscar De La Hoya of Golden Boy Promotions isn’t coming right out and tipping his fighter WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO’s) to beat Floyd Mayweather Jr. (44-0, 26 KO’s) on September 14th, but he sure is dropping a lot of hints about who he’s favoring in this fight.

A Canelo victory over Mayweather Jr. would be HUGE for Golden Boy, because it would give them a young fighter that they could turn into pay per view riches for the next 10 years before the competition catches up to him, making it too hard to maneuver him without him suffering defeats left and right.

De La Hoya 100% certain Canelo will beat Mayweather on September 14th

delahoya454By Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy promoter Oscar De La Hoya has recently said he’s not pulling for either fighter in the September 14th mega fight between Golden Boy fighter WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO’s) and mega star Floyd Mayweather Jr. (44-0, 26 KO’s), but that’s not keeping De La Hoya from telling the boxing world who he thinks is going to win that fight.

De La Hoya believes that the 22-year-old Canelo will absolutely, 100% beat the 36-year-old Mayweather when the two meet at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

De La Hoya: Canelo will be faster at 152 for Mayweather

canelo95By Dan Ambrose: Oscar De La Hoya of Golden Boy Promotions says that the catch-weight fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez was fair because the two of them agreed to fight at the mid-point between 147 and 154, and De La Hoya sees Canelo being faster at 152 rather than 153 the weight he weighed in at for his fight with Austin Trout last April.

De La Hoya said to laceupboxing.com “You’re going to see a Canelo like no other. Canelo had no problem making 154 for Trout. At 152, he’s going to be faster. It [the catch-weight] was only fair. Mayweather wanted 147 and Canelo wanted 154. It was fair to meet right in the middle.”

Looking Back – 18th September 1999: Oscar De La Hoya vs Felix Trinidad

By Peter Wells (twitter- @boxingpeter): With the upcoming latest installment of the Mexico-Puerto Rico rivalry coming up on June 15th when Mikey Garcia of Mexico takes on Juan Manuel Lopez of Puerto Rico, I felt it fitting to look back at a much talked about Mexico-Puerto Rico match-up which I had yet to witness until today.

That match-up was between two of their respective nations greatest treasures as National icons, Oscar De La Hoya and Felix ‘Tito’ Trinidad faced off in Las Vegas. A fight still talked about to this very day, not entirely for the drama in the ring but the controversial scoring that gave Felix Trinidad a majority decision win. The general consensus was that the fight was either a draw or a close victory for De La Hoya.

De La Hoya: Canelo is no Ortiz or Marquez

alvarez4332By Dan Ambrose: Oscar De La Hoya of Golden Boy Promotions feels that his #1 fighter WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez won’t meet the same fate as past victims of Floyd Mayweather Jr. like Victor Ortiz and Juan Manuel Marquez. De La Hoya thinks because Canelo comes from the streets of Mexico that it makes him different with a better chance of beating Mayweather than the other guys.

De La Hoya said to RingTV “Canelo is no Victor Ortiz. Canelo is no Marquez…Canelo comes from the streets of Mexico…he has bad intentions, let me tell you. This kid is a street guy who had bad intentions…the question is, is Mayweather going to beat Canelo solely on experience. I would guess that I think not.”

De La Hoya: Mayweather-Canelo is a huge step forward for boxing at Golden Boy

floyd#5By Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions promoter Oscar De La Hoya is putting Golden Boy’s “Golden Goose” WBA/wBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO’s) in a tough, tough fight on September 14th against Floyd Mayweather Jr. (44-0, 26 KO’s) at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Canelo just barely got past his last opponent Austin Trout in a fight with open scoring in San Antonio, Texas. I thought the fight was scored poorly by the three judges, two of which had Canelo up by huge margins after the 4th and 8th rounds despite Trout doing the better work and landing more punches.

De La Hoya believes Canelo is fighting Mayweather at the right time

canelo7By Chris Williams: Oscar De La Hoya of Golden Boy Promotions believes that WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez is getting Floyd Mayweather Jr. at the right time in Mayweather’s career with him showing signs of aging at 36 and with Canelo coming off of a 12 round unanimous decision win over WBA junior middleweight champion Austin Trout last April in San Antonio, Texas. Trout is the perfect opponent for Canelo to get ready for Mayweather.

De La Hoya said to RingTV.com “I don’t think it’s too soon [for Canelo]. I think that it’s the perfect moment…Canelo is only getting better…this is the perfect time, the perfect time.”

De La Hoya: Canelo has Cotto and Mayweather as options for his next fight in September

IMG_2483(Photo credit: Sumio Yamada) By Allan Fox: Oscar De La Hoya, the promoter for WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO’s), says that Miguel Cotto and Floyd Mayweather Jr. are the two leading candidates for Canelo’s next fight in September.

De Hoya and Golden Boy are waiting for the outcome of Mayweather’s fight next month against Robert Guerrero before they make a move to set up an opponent for Canelo in September.

De La Hoya said to elnuevodia.com “They are both options [Cotto and Mayweather], but Canelo Alvarez has said he wants to fight the best and the best currently is Floyd Mayweather. Then we have to see what will happen on May 4 because it is not guaranteed to win. Guerrero is complicated. If there is a day where you can lose your undefeated record, Floyd will be on May 4.”

De La Hoya thinks Malignaggi has a chance against Broner

malign1By Scott Gilfoid: Unlike most other boxing fans who see WBA welterweight champion Paulie Malignaggi (32-4, 7 KO’s) as having virtually no chance of beating undefeated challenger Adrien Broner (26-0, 23 KO’s) in their fight on June 22nd, Oscar De La Hoya of Golden Boy Promotions feels that the 32-year-old Malignaggi is a live dog and can win this fight at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

De La Hoya said to Fighthype.com “Don’t underestimate him [Malignaggi]. What’s exciting is that if it goes well [and Broner wins]…he goes back down to 140. He’s in the mix down there.”

De La Hoya: Canelo is on the path to become a superstar

1321(PHOTO CREDIT: Gene Blevins – Hoganphotos/Golden Boy Promotions) By Dan Ambrose: Showing a big hint of favoritism to his young fighter WBC junior middleweight Saul “Canelo Alvarez (41-0-1, 30 KO’s) at today’s media workout to promote Canelo’s fight with WBA 154 lb. champion Austin Trout (26-0, 14 KO’s) this month on April 20th at the Alamodome, in San Antonio, Texas, Golden Boy Promotions president Oscar De La Hoya said “Canelo is on the fight path and April 20th is going to show is if he’s able to make that jump.”

I have a strong feeling that Canelo’s path is about to get blocked in a major way by the 27-year-old Trout in this fight. There honestly hasn’t been much of a path for Canelo aside from a bunch of easy fights against washed up smaller fighters and tiny handful of guys at 154 that were well past their best by the time Canelo fought them.
