Canelo: Oscar is getting me May 2nd and September fight dates

canelo06By Dan Ambrose: Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (44-1-1, 31 KOs) still insists that he’ll be fighting on May 2nd and in September of next year despite the fact that Floyd Mayweather Jr has already said that he plans on fighting on those dates next year.

Canelo wants to fight on the Mexican holidays in May and September, and he sees it as a case of him wanting to take the dates due to him being Mexican. However, it might end up biting Canelo in the backside if he does try and compete with the popular Mayweather because it’ll mean that Canelo’s pay-per-view numbers for those months will likely wind up much smaller than they would be if he were to fight on another date.

Not buying Oscar’s “All terms agreed” message

delahoya7777By Robert “Big Moe” Elmore: If anybody has studied my writings, I always champion for fighters to be more active in their careers. Saul “Canelo” Alvarez with the help of Oscar De La Hoya, seems to be taking that approach. But his approach comes with a twist. He wants to reclaim the Mexican holidays (Cinco De Mayo and Mexican Independence Day) away from the current occupant Floyd Mayweather. Oscar told fighthype.com that Canelo has agreed to all terms.

Ring Magazine online, my main source, tells an entirely different story. Let’s point out a few facts here. Fact one, Todd Du Boef and Gabriel Penagaricano (Cotto’s advisor) are leading negotiations for this fight. Not Arum. He was simply brought on to help move things along. Fact two; they are still negotiating and Cotto has not been informed yet of negotiations. Fact three; the venue has not been decided upon.

De La Hoya expects Cotto-Canelo to draw over 1 million PPV buys on HBO

canelo67By Dan Abrose: Golden Boy Promotions president Oscar De La Hoya is confident that the proposed May 2nd showdown between WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (39-4, 32 KOs) and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (44-1-1, 31 KOs) will bring in over 1 million pay-per-view buys on HBO, and give the two fighters the biggest paydays of their careers.

The Cotto-Canelo fight likely won’t do nearly as well as when the two fighters each fought Floyd Mayweather Jr . However, they’ll be getting a much bigger purse split in facing each other than they did against Mayweather, and that ultimately could mean a bigger payday for them if the fight does as well on HBO PPV as De La Hoya seems to think it will.

De La Hoya: Hopkins isn’t ready to retire yet

kovalev555By Jim Dower: Golden Boy Promotions president Oscar De La Hoya says that 49-year-old Bernard Hopkins (55-7-2, 32 KOs) isn’t ready to retire from boxing just yet after his one-sided 12 round unanimous decision loss to WBO light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev (26-0-1, 23 KOs) last Saturday night at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Hopkins was knocked down in the 1st round, and ended up losing the fight by the scores of 120-106, 120-107 and 120-107.

De La Hoya thinks that Hopkins would have won last Saturday night had he been in the ring with any other top light heavyweight or even against some of the top super middleweights like Carl Froch or Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.

De La Hoya thinks Canelo-Cotto is fight boxing fans want to see, not Mayweather-Pacquiao

canelo90By Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions president Oscar De La Hoya says that the fight that boxing fans are craving to see right now is a clash between WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (39-4, 32 KOs) and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (44-1-1, 31 KOs) rather than Manny Pacquiao vs. Floyd Mayweather Jr.

De La Hoya thinks that the Canelo-Cotto fight can bring in over 2 million pay-per-view buys despite the fact that neither Canelo or Cotto have proven themselves capable of drawing above 300,000 PPV buys when they were the A-side of a PPV card.

De La Hoya points out that they both want to get a fight against superstar Floyd Mayweather Jr, and they’ll need to prove themselves if they want to get that fight.

De La Hoya: I have no doubt Canelo and Golovkin will fight

golovkin667(Photo credit: Sumio Yamada) By Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions president Oscar De La Hoya says that former WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (44-1-1, 31 KOs) will wind up facing each other, according to Dan Rafael of ESPN. Just when they’ll face each other is anyone’s guess.

It might not be a great fight if Canelo gets whipped by WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto first in their proposed fight next year in May. Once the red-haired Canelo has been beaten for the second time, it’ll no longer be nearly as interesting for Golovkin to fight him.

Is the Loss of Cinco De Mayo Oscar De La Hoya’s Fault?

delahoya7777By Michael Herron: In boxing May 5th or Cinco de Mayo has become synonymous with a big fight and big night of boxing! The date, which is often mistaken as Mexico’s Independence Day, commemorates the Mexican army’s unlikely victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. The event is a source of national pride as it re-imagines a Mexican David defeating a French Goliath. In boxing it is not uncommon that on this date the sports major attraction will face off with his greatest rival, the fervor is increased tenfold when one or both participants are of Mexican descent.

In recent years however boxing’s Cinco de Mayo weekend has not been the legendary night of Mexican fighters that many believe it should be but in fact has become a showcase for an African American fighter, boxing’s top pay-per-view attraction Floyd “Money” Mayweather. Is it necessary to note that Mayweather is an African American? Yes, because boxing is a very nationalistic/patriotic sport and nationalism is the reason some fights are bigger than others. Major boxing events taking place on Cinco de Mayo and the September 16th Mexican Independence Day are the very definition of nationalism in sports.

De La Hoya: I’m losing patience with Mayweather-Pacquiao fight

floyd98By Chris Williams: Golden Boy Promotions president Oscar De La Hoya says he’s losing patience waiting for a mega fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr and Manny Pacquiao to happen. De La Hoya says he’s been waiting for ages for the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight to happen, but he’s now no longer looking forward to that fight.

Instead, De La Hoya is looking towards a fight that his company Golden Boy will be putting together with Top Rank in early next year between Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto.

De La Hoya: I have to do what Canelo asks me

canelo898999By Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions president Oscar de La Hoya says that the reason he opted to move his star Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (44-1-1, 31 KOs) over to HBO from Showtime is that Canelo asked him to make the move is because De La Hoya didn’t want to upset the 24-year-old Canelo and jeopardize his relationship with the red-headed star.

De La Hoya wasn’t willing to take the risk of saying no to Canelo and potentially mess things up for himself.

De La Hoya said that he wanted to work with HBO anyway, so it wasn’t a situation where it was important for him to risk his relationship with Canelo by saying no.
