Orlando Salido defends WBO 130lb title vs. Roman Martinez on Saturday

salido2by Robert Earle Stanton – Author of “Selling the Pain” – For a guy that started in 1996 and lost his first fight to hold a record of 6-5-1 by 1998 to take a break of around two years to go on and beat 44-3-1 Regilio Tuur to then beat 28-4-1 Alfred Kotey, getting up off the canvas to do so, it would seem he would get his dream in a shot for the WBA/IBF featherweight titles in ’04 yet lose a UD to 42-2-1 Juan Manuel Marquez. That was not the end.

He would come off that fight with a big win over Cesar Soto in ’05 and in ’06 he would win the IBF featherweight title over 19-1-1 Robert Guerrero by UD yet test positive for steroids and it would be turned into a NO CONTEST.

Salido and Martinez Gear up for War on April 11!

salido2By Everest Castaneda: WBO super featherweight champion Orlando “Siri” Salido’s (42-12-2, 29 KOs) first title defense will be held in San Juan, Puerto Rico on April 11 against tough, former WBO super featherweight champion Roman “Rocky” Martinez (28-2-2, 17 KOs). Although Salido had “two offers on the table” since being elevated to full WBO champion, his manager, Sean Gibbons, in an interview by ESPN.com, decided that Martinez “…will be there mixing it up with Orlando. They can both crack.”

Since losing his title to former WBO super featherweight champion, Miguel Angel “Mikey” Garcia (34-0, 24 KOs), Martinez has had one win by knockout over journeyman Herbert “Sensational” Quartey (12-11, 9 KOs). Although Quartey was riding a 2 fight win streak at the time, we’ve seen him get completely dismantled in his last fight by up-and-coming prospect Lamont Roach Jr. (6-0, 3 KOs); thereby, making Martinez’s most recent victory rather lackluster.

Salido stops Kokietgym in 11th, captures interim WBO super featherweight title

kokietgym6By Dan Ambrose: In an exciting back and forth fight, former WBO featherweight champion Orlando Salido (42-12-2, 29 KOs) has to climb up off the deck on three separate occasions to eventually wear down and stop 33-year-old former world title challenger Tersak Kokietgym (53-5-1, 33 KOs) in the 11th round on Saturday night to win the interim WBO super featherweight title at the Auditorio Municipal in Tijuana, BC, Mexico.

Both Salido and Kokietgym hit the deck in the opening round with big power shots. Salido, a notorious slow starter, was then knocked down in the next round in getting put down by a big shot in the 2nd. Salido paid Kokietgym back in the 4th by dropping him. But a round later, Salido was knocked down again. This was the third and final time Salido hit the deck, because after this knockdown he finally get his act together and started punishing Kokietgym with body shots while staying in close.
