Mikey Garcia says Thurman vs. Porter could have been scored a draw

Thurman vs Porter

By Allan Fox: Former two division world champion Mikey Garcia says he thinks last months’ exciting welterweight clash between WBA champion Keith “One Time” Thurman and Shawn Porter was so close that it could have been scored a draw.

Thurman won the fight by a 12 round unanimous decision by the scores of 115-113, 115-113 and 115-113. The general consensus from the boxing fans is that Thurman did just enough to squeak out a narrow victory. However, there were a great many fans that felt the fight could have been scored a draw. This writer had Porter winning six rounds.

Mikey Garcia wants Terry Flanagan

mikey

By Scott Gilfoid: Unbeaten former two division world champion Mikey Garcia (34-0, 28 KOs) hasn’t fought in two years, but he’s already targeting WBO lightweight champion Terry Flanagan (30-0, 12 KOs) to go after his scalp and take his WBO title from him before moving up to light welterweight. Garcia, 28, isn’t ranked in the top 15 by the World Boxing Organization at the moment, which could make it kind of tough on him to get a crack at Flanagan’s title unless a fight can be worked out between them anyway.

Garcia will be fighting next month against Elio Rojas (24-2, 14 KOs) on July 30 on the undercard of the Leo Santa Cruz vs. Carl Frampton card at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. That should be a very wasy fight for Garcia, as Rojas is not a major talent in the sport.

Mikey Garcia vs. Elio Rojas on July 30

mikey

By Dan Ambrose: 28-year-old former two division world champion Mikey Garcia (34-0, 28 KOs) will be restarting his career on July 30th against 34-year-old light welterweight Elio Rojas (24-2, 14 KOs) in a scheduled 10 round fight on Showtime Boxing on the undercard of the Leo Santa Cruz vs. Carl Frampton featherweight fight at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Garcia hasn’t fought since his 12 round decision win over Juan Carlos Burgos in January 2014. Garcia hasn’t fought since then because he was embroiled in promotional issues with his past promoters at Top Rank. All that is now behind him, and he’s hoping to regain his place in the sport as one of the best fighters. Garcia says his fight against Rojas will be at light welterweight.

Mikey Garcia to fight in July or August

garcia324

By Dan Ambrose: Former two-division world champion Mikey Garcia (34-0, 28 knockouts) will be finally back inside the ring either next month in July or in August against an opponent still to be determined. The 28-year-0old Mikey has been out of action for the last two and half years since January 2014. He had promotional issues with his former promoters at Top Rank.

Garcia still hasn’t signed with any promoters yet. Mayweather Promotions are interested in signing him. He also could sign with manager Al Haymon. Garcia last fought at super featherweight, but he’s now exacted to campaign two divisions above that weight class at light welterweight (140).

He’ll be training with his older brother Robert Garcia in Riverside, California. Garcia wants to win titles at 135 [lightweight], 140 and 147 before his career is over. It’s going to be difficult for Garcia to win belts at 140 and 147 though, because those guys can punch and they can take a good shot at well.

Krzysztof Glowacki vs. Steve Cunningham possible for April

1-Garcia_Cunningham_7-22-15_18425By Allan Fox: After sitting out of action for the past six months due to injury related problems, WBO cruiserweight champion Krzysztof Glowacki (25-0, 16 KOs) will be looking to return to the ring in April against former IBF cruiserweight champion Steve Cunningham (28-7-1, 13 KOs) in a voluntary defense.

Glowacki, 29, won the WBO cruiserweight title last August with an 11th round stoppage win over former champion Marco Huck. Glowacki has been dealing with an injury to his left elbow and wrist, which required surgery to repair. He’s been rehabbing the problem since then. It’s only now that Glowacki is able to get ready to return to the ring.

Mikey Garcia will be better than before, says Robert G.

garcia324By Dan Ambrose: Trainer Robert Garcia says former two division world champion Mikey Garcia (34-0, 28 KOs) is ready to make a comeback after sitting outside of the ring for the past two years. It’s unclear if the now 28-year-old Mikey will still be with Top Rank when he does return to the ring.

Mikey hasn’t fought since beating Juan Carlos Burgos by a 12 round unanimous decision in January 2014. That’s a long time to be outside of the ring, and you have to figure that Garcia won’t be the same fighter that he was before the long layoff. Robert believes that Mikey will be better than he was before.

He bases this opinion on how Mikey has been looking in the gym while sparring with different people. Robert says that he never sees Mikey lose a round in sparring. That sounds nice, but sparring is a much different thing than fighting. We also don’t know who Mikey has been sparring with in the last two years.

Mikey Garcia says he’ll face Crawford if Top Rank lets him walk away

garcia7867By Dan Ambrose: Former two division world champion Mikey Garcia (34-0, 28 KOs) says he’ll gladly face WBO light welterweight champion Terence Crawford (27-0, 19 KOs) next if his promoter Bob Arum of Top Rank will let him end his contract and walk away from the company so that he can look in another direction with his career.

Garcia, 28, hasn’t fought since January of 2014 in beating Juan Carlos Burgos by a 12 round decision. Since then, Garcia hasn’t fought since then due to him having promotional problems with Top Rank. Garcia wants to move on and Top Rank doesn’t appear to be interested in letting him. It’s unclear whether Garcia will sacrifice his career this way or if he’ll eventually give in and continue the remainder of his contract with Top Rank.

Mikey Garcia moving up to 140 pound division

mikey8By Dan Ambrose: After sitting out of the ring for an entire year, former two division world champion Mikey Garcia (34-0, 28 KOs) says he plans on moving up two divisions to campaign as a light welterweight at 140 pounds.

Garcia, 27, wants to take a catch-weight fight under the full 140 pound limit for his first fight back, and then after that fight for a world title against one of the light welterweight champions.

Garcia hasn’t fought since beating Juan Carlos Burgos by a 12 round unanimous decision last year in January when he defended his WBO super featherweight title for the last time.

WBO makes Orlando Salido new 130lb champ; Mikey Garcia moving to light welterweight

salido2By Dan Ambrose: On Tuesday, World Boxing Organization (WBO) president Paco Valcarcel revealed that the WBO has made Orlando Salido (42-12-2, 29 KOs) the new WBO super featherweight champion. Valcarcel also said that the current WBO 130 pound champion Mikey Garcia is moving up to light welterweight [140].

In other words, Mikey will be skipping the lightweight [135] pound division completely. Presumably, Valcarcel had previously spoken with Mikey to find out what his plans are before making this announcement.
