Predatory Provodnikov makes Mike Alvarado his Prey

provodnikov83By Robbie Bannatyne: Styles make Fights.

This is the truest cliché of all in boxing. And it was perfectly applicable to the hellacious battle between Mike Alvarado and Ruslan Provodnikov, in Denver, Colorado, last Saturday night.

The fight, which was valid for Alvarado’s WBO Light Welterweight title, had been billed as a bone fide fight of the year candidate ever since it was announced by Top Rank promotions. Those predictions proved to be spot on as it was a war of attrition from the beginning to the brutal end.

Alvarado-Provodnikov fight draws 1.2 million views on HBO

provodnikov999By Dan Ambrose: Last Saturday night’s bout bout between former WBO light welterweight champion Mike Alvarado (34-2, 23 KO’s) and Ruslan Provodnikov (23-2, 16 KO’s) drew an impressive 1.2 million viewers on HBO. The totals equals the amount of viewers that tuned in to watch Alvarado’s previous fight against Brandon Rios last March on HBO.

What this means is that there’s a good possibility that HBO will be televising an Alvarado-Provodnikov rematch in the future or they’ll at least continue to televise Alvarado’s fights despite him quitting after the 10th round.

There’s no question that HBO will continue to show Provodnikov’s fights because he’s really impressed the network with his performances in the Tim Bradley and now the Alvarado fight.

The week in Boxing

provodnikov518By Rachel Aylett: On revisiting the big fight of the week, I would like to give enormous credit to new WBO light-welterweight champion Ruslan Provodnikov. I noted whilst watching his fight against Mike Alvarado that the Siberian Rocky is almost unrecognizable from the fighter that was soundly outpointed on ESPN’s Friday Night Fights in January 2011 by Mauricio Herrera. That was a fan friendly fight, as are all of Ruslan’s engagements, but the Russian lost clearly and was out-skilled by the fringe contender from the US.

After seeing that fight it was hard to imagine that Provodnikov, just over two years later, would be able to give Timothy Bradley 12 rounds of hell and then batter renowned tough guy Alvarado to defeat on his home patch. In those days the Siberian looked like just another tough guy brawler. However, Ruslan’s transfer to the Freddie Roach stable in January 2012 along with the associated invaluable sparring he has done with Manny Pacquiao during that period, looks to have benefited him immeasurably.

Provodnikov sees no point in fighting Alvarado again

provodnikov600By Chris Williams: If Top Rank promoter Bob Arum wants newly crowned WBO light welterweight champion Ruslan Provodnikov (23-2, 16 KO’s) to fight his stable fighter Mike Alvarado (34-2, 23 KO’s) then he’s probably going to have to open up his wallet wide and dig deep to find enough change to make it appealing to Provodnikov to take the fight because he’s not interested in facing Alvarado again.

Provodnikov feels his win was convincing enough to suggest that there’s no point in a rematch between them. Instead of fighting Alvarado again, Provodnikov would like to face either Manny Pacquiao or Tim Bradley. Unfortunately, those are two names that Arum isn’t mentioning for Provodnikov to fight right now.

Alvarado and Provodnikov: Sometimes your best isn’t enough

alvarado56By Jay McIntyre: While this Saturday’s fight between Mike Alvarado  (34-2, 23 KO’s) and Ruslan Provodnikov (23-2, 16 KO’s) was indeed a display of courage under fire, I couldn’t help but revise my earlier prediction (Mike Alvarado by decision) by the end of the first round. I know that it was a hasty reassessment, but in this case it proved to be a valid one.

Going into the fight I saw Mike Alvarado as having three variables favouring him. To begin with, he was fighting not only in his home state, but with the familiar advantages of training at the ‘mile high’ elevation and then fighting there as well. Secondly, Alvarado, if he intended to box, would have a staggering six inch reach advantage. Lastly, there was the noticeable absence of Freddie Roach from Ruslan’s corner (even though a capable replacement was deputized for the role).

Alvarado didn’t have to trade punches with Provodnikov

provodnikov100By Babatis Banda: Mike Alvarado (34-2, 23 KO’s) was broken down by the ruthless Russian Ruslan Provodnikov (23-2, 16 KO’s). It was a good and exciting fight. For the casual fan, this was all that constitutes boxing, heavy exchanges and blood.

For an educated fan with an eye for skill, this was yet another senseless war, the kind that is crippling both physically and emotionally, a complete Gatti style that excites everybody and leaves the boxer to fight physical health and mental problems. More often than not, boxers who have such a terrible career while offering a casual fan excitement either end up depressed, physically sick or take their lives.

Provodnikov´s relentless pressure stops Alvarado

provodnikov10By Gerardo Granados: Last night at Denver, Colorado, U.S.A.; the Siberian Rocky Ruslan Provodnikov defeated the defending champion Mike Mile High Alvarado by TKO10. In a fight that lived up to the expectations and none of the boxing fans got bored by the superb performance of these two ring warriors. I have no doubt that this one is a serious candidate for the fight of the year award.

I can´t recall the last time that two fighters who fought each other were candidates for the fight of the year award after being involved in two different fights that are solid candidates for the award in the same year: Mike Alvarado vs. Brandon Rios, Ruslan Provodnikov vs. Tim Bradley and Mike Alvarado vs. Ruslan Provodnikov fights.

The real heavyweight battle

By Jamie Eskdale: Boxing fans are being denied the right to see some real exciting fights because of Promotional stables unwilling or just out right refusing to work together. Last night Ruslan Provodnikov (23-2, 16 KO’s) battered Mike Alvarado (34-2, 23 KO’s0 into submission to claim the WBO junior welterweight title.

Alvarado: It wasn’t worth taking the punishment

provodnikov7By Eric Thomas: Former WBO light welterweight champion Mike Alvarado (34-2, 23 KO’s) came out and admitted after his 10th round knockout loss to Russian Ruslan Provodnikov (23-2, 16 KO’s) last night that he felt it wasn’t worth it for him to continue fighting after the beating he took in the 10th round. Alvarado was asked by referee Tony Weeks if he wanted to continue fighting and he said no, according to Weeks.

This was one of the better fights for HBO. Compared to recent bout between Tim Bradley and Juan Manuel Marquez, this fight was leagues above it in excitement. The crowd at the 1STBANK Center, Broomfield, in Denver, Colorado, USA, was loud and energetic up until the very end of the fight.
