Golovkin is just too dangerous for Miguel Cotto, says Robert Garcia

golovkin1By Dan Ambrose: Trainer Robert Garcia thinks that WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (39-4, 32 KO’s) avoid fighting WBA 160-pound champion Gennady Golovkin (29-0, 26 KO’s) because he sees Golovkin as far too dangerous for the 5’7” Cotto to fight. Golovkin isn’t old and coming off of major knee surgeries, and he feels that he would be too much for Cotto to do with.

Instead of Cotto fighting Golovkin and likely getting knocked out in 2-3 rounds, Garcia thinks Cotto would be better off fighting Floyd Mayweather Jr in a rematch or facing Saul “Canelo” Alvarez if the fight can be put together.

“I think triple G is just too dangerous [for Cotto],” said Garcia. “He [Cotto] could fight Mayweather again. That’s a fight that people would buy. Cotto vs. Mayweather again. Cotto vs. Canelo. It would be huge – Puerto Rico vs. Mexico.”

Aftermath: Cotto vs. Martinez – A Perfect Storm

martinez6367By Jay McIntyre: The greatness of an individual has often been attributed to that person being either in eventful circumstances or having an event-making personality. But this is an oversimplification because true greatness often requires an alignment of both.

William Shakespeare’s manipulative Roman character, Cassius, once remarked to his would-be conspirator that “the fault, dear Brutus, lies not in our stars, but in ourselves, that we are men.” When looking at what fighters are capable of accomplishing in the ring, sometimes their greatest achievements arise from the perfect combination of preparation and opportunity. A fighter can only rise so high on talent and guidance alone.

Jeff Mayweather: Roach didn’t improve Cotto; Martinez wasn’t 100% for fight

martinez906By Chris Williams: Jeff Mayweather says that trainer Freddie Roach hasn’t made any real changes to Miguel Cotto at all, and that the reason why he beat WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez last Saturday night was more of a situation of Martinez not being 100% after coming off two knee surgeries and a long 14 month layoff rather than Cotto being a rejuvenated fighter because of Roach’s training.

“Everyone thought that Martinez would win based on him coming back [from the injuries] 100%, and obviously he didn’t,” Jeff said to Hustleboss.com.

Roach doesn’t want Cotto-Pacquiao rematch

roach67By Alon Calinao Dy: After the impressive performance of Puerto Rican boxer Miguel Cotto over former WBC champion Sergio Martinez last week at the Madison Square Garden in New York, USA, legendary trainer Freddie Roach does not see any possibilities that both his fighters Cotto and Pacquiao are going to fight for the second time, for Filipino boxing icon to win his ninth world boxing crown.

According to some reports, Top Rank Promoter Bob Arum is trying hard to persuade Mexican boxing legend Juan Manuel Marquez to fight superstar Pacquiao for a fifth time. However, fans say that Marquez is asking for $20 million, which is a huge amount of money that would eventually cut the purse of Pacquiao if he is going to agree to this demand.

Roger Mayweather: Floyd Jr would whip Cotto again

cotto674By Chris Williams: Roger Mayweather, the uncle and trainer for Floyd Mayweather Jr, says that Floyd Jr. would whip Miguel Cotto (39-4, 32 KO’s) and take his WBC middleweight title off of him if they were to fight again. Roger feels that their previous fight in 2012 wasn’t even close, and that was with Floyd Jr intentionally fighting Cotto’s fight in order to make it a more crowd pleasing fight for the fans.

Floyd Jr didn’t want to go out there and make Cotto miss all night long to make him look really bad the way he could have done.

Roach: Cotto would KO Mayweather now

cotto621By Chris Williams: Miguel Cotto’s win over WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (51-3-2, 28 KO’s) has trainer Freddie Roach and Top Rank promoter Bob Arum both believing that Cotto is a new man and is better than ever was before. And they both believe that Cotto would beat Floyd Mayweather Jr (46-0, 26 KO’s) right now if he were to agree to give him a second fight.

It’s hard to understand why Mayweather would fight Cotto again because he already beat him by a lopsided 12 round decision in 2012, and Mayweather doesn’t waste time going over old ground to keep fighting the same guy over and over and over again like some fighters do. Mayweather moves on each time he picks up a pelt.

Where does Miguel Cotto and Sergio Martinez go now ?

martinez777425689(Photo credit: Naoki Fakuda) By Cameron Gillon: After beating the odds last Saturday night at MSG in New York against the WBC and Ring Magazine Middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (51-3-2, 28 KO’s), the question now is where does Miguel Cotto (39-4, 32 KO’s) go now and who should he fight in his next bout? I was one of the people that thought Sergio Martinez would emerge victorious last night but obviously I was wrong.

I thought Cotto wouldn’t have enough to beat Sergio, but how he proved me and the other Martinez fans wrong. He controlled the fight from the first punch landed, and no one would of expected him to put Martinez down three times in the 1st round. From then on Martinez was a sitting duck, his legs had gone from the first knockdown and Cotto knew that, and to Sergio Martinez’s credit, he stuck in there and put a hell of a effort up to win the fight despite being in a terrible state.

Roach thinks Mayweather won’t fight Cotto again

floyd333By Chris Williams: Freddie Roach would like it if Floyd Mayweather Jr. were to move up in weight to challenge his fighter WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto for his newly won 160-pound title for his next fight, but Roach doesn’t think Mayweather will agree to take a second fight with Cotto, even though Mayweather already proved himself to be the superior fighter to Cotto two years ago.

Roach thinks that with the way that Cotto beat up Sergio Martinez last Saturday, it’ll have Mayweather not interested in tempting fate to get in the ring with Cotto a second time.

“He [Mayweather won’t fight anyone else,” Roach said. When asked if Mayweather will agree to fight fight Cotto at 160, Roach said “I don’t think so. He’ll [Mayweather] come up with some excuse.”

And the new middleweight champion of the world….Floyd “Money” Mayweather Jr?

floyd688By Chester Rivers: Unless you’ve been living under a rock you’ve probably heard by now that Miguel Angel Cotto is the new middleweight champion of the world. He is considered the lineal champ of the division because he defeated Sergio Martinez who defeated Kelly Pavlik who defeated Jermain Taylor who defeated the last undisputed champion Bernard Hopkins. Now, I’ll give you guys a few minutes to decipher. Got It! Okay, moving on!

The fight was fought at a catchweight of 159 pounds with Miguel Cotto weighing in at 155. My question is, can Cotto continue to reign as the middleweight champ if he’s the smallest guy in the division or should he use the title (in name only) and cash out?

Cotto beats the shell of Sergio Martinez

cotto010101(Photo credit: Naoki Fakuda) By Daniel Hughes: The last trait of many a fighter to go is his ability to punch. It’s often been said that the punch resistance and the reflexes of a fighter can go overnight, especially in fighters that has come off a long layoff such as 39-year-old Sergio Martinez (51-3-2, 28 KO’s).

The credit has to be given to the 33-year-old Miguel Cotto (39-4, 32 KO’s) becoming the new WBC middleweight champion at Madison Square Garden in New York last Saturday night. He proved a lot of critics wrong and delighted his legions of fans in the process. A vintage Cotto took the fight to Martinez from the start, pressuring him constantly. Cotto, doing what he does so well, showed the ability to test the will and heart of his opponent. He did this to great effect against Martinez.
