Haymon offering Cotto $40 million to face Mayweather?

cotto75By Dan Ambrose: High powered adviser Al Haymon has allegedly offered WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto $40 million to face superstar Floyd Mayweather Jr, according to The Sport Press.

This hasn’t been confirmed to be true as of yet, but if does turn out to be true then it would be a huge amount of money for the 34-year-old Cotto. With that kind of money the assumption would be that the Mayweather-Cotto 2 fight would do over 2 million pay-per-view buys, and it’s highly doubtful that it could bring in those kinds of numbers unless the fight card was totally loaded with big stars from top to bottom.

If Mayweather fights Cotto instead of Pacquiao is it Arum’s fault?

floyd63By Chris Williams: Floyd Mayweather Jr recently made it clear to the entire boxing world that he wants to fight Manny Pacquiao next on the Mexican holiday Cinco de Mayo on May 2nd. It was thought at the time that Pacquiao would gladly take the fight with Mayweather, especially given that he’s been asking for this fight for the past five years.

Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum almost immediately started talking about the May 2nd date being a Mexican holiday and that Mayweather shouldn’t be looking to take that date. Instead of agreeing to match Pacquiao against Mayweather on May 2nd, Arum took the stance of having the fight take place in April or June.

Mayweather could face Cotto on May 2nd

cotto3434By Dan Ambrose: Just as I thought – Saul “Canelo” Alvarez may have spoken too soon about taking the May 2nd Mexican holiday from Floyd Mayweather Jr. It seems that the Canelo vs. Miguel Cotto negotiations have reached an impasse, and Cotto’s management are now thinking about facing superstar Floyd Mayweather Jr on May 2nd instead of Canelo.

I figured something like this would happen, because Canelo is a fighter that is a hard negotiator and that kind of thing doesn’t work when you have an A-side star like Cotto.

Canelo will have tough time keeping May 2nd date without Cotto

canelo433By Dan Ambrose: Former WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (44-1-1, 31 KOs) has backed himself against a wall by insisting that he fight on May 2nd no matter what. Canelo is directly challenging the much more popular Floyd Mayweather Jr for the May 2nd date.

Canelo wants the date due to it falling on one of the Mexican holidays. Canelo feels that a Mexican fighter should fight on those dates rather than someone like Mayweather, and Canelo believes that he should be the one that is fighting on the date.

Cotto has plan-B option with Mayweather if Canelo fight doesn’t get made

cotto667By Dan Ambrose: WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (39-4, 32 KOs) has the perfect plan-B backup plan if his proposed opponent Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (44-1-1, 31 KOs) gets a little too greedy and asks for too much money or other things in their negotiations for their May 2nd fight.

Cotto can always agree to fight Floyd Mayweather Jr in a rematch that would likely bring in huge pay-per-view numbers on Showtime.

Golovkin beats Cotto by KO, says Anthony Dirrell

cotto552By Dan Ambrose: WBC super middleweight champion Anthony Dirrell is picking WBA Super World middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin to beat WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto by knockout if the two fighters end up facing each other in 2015.

That’s a big if because Cotto will likely face Saul “Canelo” Alvarez next, and that could prove to be one step too far for the 34-year-old Cotto. He’s won his last two fights against Delvin Rodriguez and Sergio Martinez, but we’re talking about two fighters that have seen their best days already in the ring.

Canelo: I will not move off the May 2nd date

canelo7657By Dan Ambrose: Former WBA junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez may not be anywhere near the popularity or the talent level of Floyd Mayweather Jr, but that’s not keeping the red-haired Canelo from budging from the May 2nd date that he plans on fighting.

The May 2nd date falls on Cinco de Mayo, and that’s a date that Mayweather has been fighting on for the last five years. However, Canelo says that date is one of the Mexican holiday dates, and he’s stubbornly not going to move off the date even though he doesn’t bring in anywhere near the same pay-per-view numbers that Mayweather does.

Golovkin waiting on Cotto-Canelo fight

golovkin7356By Dan Ambrose: WBA Super World middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin says he’s waiting to get a fight for the WBC 160 pound title against either Miguel Cotto or Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. Golovkin is ready to fight either of those guys unless they opt to vacate the WBC title.

The Cotto-Canelo fight could take place on May 2nd unless there’s a problem with the negotiations that keeps the fight from getting made in the first half of 2015. If that’s the case, then we could see Cotto take an optional title defense instead while he waits on the Canelo fight.

Golovkin-Murray winner will be mandatory challenger to Cotto-Canelo winner

golovkin433By Dan Ambrose: A win for WBA World middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (31-0, 28 KOs) in his next fight against #1 WBC Martin Murray (29-1-1, 12 KOs) on February 21st will set Golovkin up as the WBC mandatory challenger to the winner of the proposed fight between WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (39-4, 32 KOs) and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (44-1-1, 31 KOs) on May 2nd.

This would then put the Cotto-Canelo winner in a situation where they’ll need to decide whether it’s worth it or not to be the WBC 160 pound champion when they would soon be forced to defend their strap against a real middleweight in Golovkin.

Mayweather: I beat both Cotto and Canelo; Cinco de Mayo holiday isn’t just for Mexicans

floyd77777By Chris Williams: Floyd Mayweather Jr doesn’t agree with Manny Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum that the Cinco de Mayo holiday on May 2nd should be for Mexican fighters like Saul “Canelo” Alvarez.

Mayweather feels that anyone has the right to fight on those dates. He points he’s got Mexican fans and he should be allowed to fight on one of Mexican holidays like he’s been doing recently.

“When I hear Cinco de Mayo is just for the Mexicans, the last time I checked any holiday is for anyone,” Mayweather said to Fighthype.com.
