Mayweather Is Officially Back: Good! How About Fighting Williams,Cotto & Mosley?

mayweather32341By Manuel Perez: Floyd Mayweather Jr. (39-0, 25 KOs) made it official today that he’s coming back after more than a year away from boxing to fight lightweight Juan Manuel Marquez on July 18th at the MGM Grand, in Las Vegas, Nevada. Excuse me if I don’t get excited about the bout, because it seems like another case of Mayweather, a welterweight, finding a smaller opponent that he feels that he can beat.

Will Jennings Ever Fight For a Major Title Again?

jennings352437By Dan Ambrose: After toiling for 10 long years as a professional fighter, Michael Jennings (34-2, 16 KOs) finally got his big chance two weeks again in an attempt at fighting for the vacant WBO welterweight title against Miguel Cotto (33-1, 27 KOs) at Madison Square Garden, in New York. Unfortunately, things didn’t go as Jennings would like for them to and he ultimately was stopped quite easily in a 5th round TKO loss to Cotto.

Chavez Jr. vs. Cuello on March 28th; Did Jennings Give 100% Against Cotto?

chavez4234142By Manuel Perez: Undefeated light middleweight contender Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (38-0, 29 KOs) will face unbeaten Argentinean Luciano Leonel Cuello (23-0, 10 KOs) on March 28th in Tijuana, Baja California, for the vacant WBO Latino light middleweight title. Chavez, 23, is making a slightly bigger step up from some of the softer opponents that he’s been facing thus far in his six year pro career. Without the luxury of any kind of amateur career to speak of, Chavez Jr. is taking the slow approach to his pro career building up slowly against better fighters in small increments rather than leaps and bounds.

Cotto Being More Vocal Over Top Rank’s Bringing Margarito Back

cotto32352By Sam Gregory: The only lose on Miguel Cotto’s otherwise unblemished record came at the hands of Antonio Margarito in an eleventh round stoppage July 26th of 08’. That lose seemed to take on a completely different meaning after the so called “Wrapegate” controversy that sprang up when Margarito’s hand-wraps were found to be illegal prior to his January 24th bout with Shane Mosley.

Cotto vs. Berto or Clottey?

By Matt Stein: after dismantling challenger Michael Jennings on Saturday night in an easy 5th round TKO victory, the question in the minds of many boxing fans is who will Miguel Cotto be facing next? Although many would love nothing better than to see Cotto face Paul Williams or fight a rematch with Antonio Margarito, it’s extremely doubtful that Cotto’s promotional team would want to risk putting him with such tough fighters like these.

Pavlik and Cotto Proved Little

cotto3243553333By Dave Lahr: I’m still trying to figure out what either Miguel Cotto and Kelly Pavlik accomplished this past weekend in beating the poor opposition that they were put in with. 10 years ago, names like Marco Antonio Rubio and Michael Jennings would have never been in the position to challenge for a title against quality fighters like Pavlik and Cotto, yet this weekend we had to suffer through both of these bouts which ended in one-sided knockouts.

jennings3524353By Michael Lieberman: After watching Michael Jennings (34-2, 16) get destroyed by Miguel Cotto (33-1, 27 KOs) last night in the 5th round at Madison Square Garden, the big question is should Jennings hang up the gloves? Jennings says he won’t retire, saying “”I want to keep going and fight for different things, whether it be a British title or a different title.”

Cotto vs. Hatton Next?

cotto44234635By Scott Gilfoid: Predictably, Miguel (33-1, 27 KOs) made a mess of Michael Jennings’ (34-2, 16) farfetched dream of winning the vacant WBO welterweight title by wiping him out in a 5th round knockout. Jennings tried the best he could but he had no weapons to use against the powerful shots from Cotto. Whereas Cotto was laying waste to Jennings with sledgehammer left hooks, Jennings was only able to fire back with pesky jabs. As you can guess, Jennings stood no chance in the fight and was beaten down in five lop-sided rounds.
