The Fabulous Four

Image: The Fabulous Four

By Gav Duthie: When I was first getting into boxing I went round to my high street HMV and bought all the boxing history videotapes I could. Youtube is great these days but it was guys like Bert Sugar, Harry Carpenter, Teddy Atlas etc that set the scene in these historic video/DVD pieces conveying how eras were shaped rather than just watching individual fights. Hagler doesn’t think Mayweather winning 50 fights would be as impressive as a heavyweight doing it

Floyd MayweatherBy Dan Ambrose: Former middleweight world champion Marvin Hagler doesn’t think WBA/WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. (48-0, 26 KOs) would be accomplishing as much in winning his 50th fight than it would be for a heavyweight going 50-0. Mayweather is looking to tie former heavyweight world champion Rocky Marciano’s record of 49-0, which he set in 1956.

The record has since been broken twice by non-heavyweights in Julio Cesar Chavez and Ricardo Lopez. Mayweather has said that he doesn’t plan on sticking around for another fight after he ties the 49-0 mark by Marciano.

Mayweather should fight Golovkin, says Hagler

golovkin445By Dan Ambrose: Former IBF/WBA/WBC middleweight champion Marvin Hagler thinks Floyd Mayweather Jr. (48-0, 26 KOs) should face WBA 160lb champion Gennady Golovkin (33-0, 30 KOs) next. Hagler sees Golovkin as an interesting opponent for Mayweather to fight. Mayweather is said to be fighting former IBF/WBC welterweight champion Andre Berto (30-3, 23 KOs) on September 12th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Boxing fans as a whole have no interest in seeing Mayweather fight Berto, even if the fight is on free television. They want to see Mayweather fight #1. Golovkin 2. Amir Khan. 3. Keith Thurman 4. Shawn Porter.

hagler44468By Gav Duthie: Promoter Bob Arum labelled the 1985 super-fight between Marvelous Marvin Hagler 60-2-2 (50) and Thomas ‘The Hitman’ Hearns 40-1 (34) simply ‘The War’. He certainly wasn’t wrong, what transpired was arguably the greatest 8 minutes in boxing history.

This fight had its 30 year anniversary just last week in an era that many fans call the best ever. Hagler and Hearns made up one half of the fabulous four alongside ‘Sugar’ Ray Leonard and Roberto Duran.
