The first contest of the World Boxing Super Series will be the cruiserweight quarter-final between WBO World Champion Oleksandr Usyk (12-0, 10 KOs) and Marco Huck (40-4-1, 27 KOs) at the Max-Schmeling-Halle, Berlin on September 9th.
Number one seed in the 200lb (90.7 kg) bracket, Usyk, picked the experienced German fighter to be the third defence of his title at the Draft Gala in Monaco earlier this month.
By Scott Gilfoid: Marco Huck (40-4-1, 27 KOs) says he isn’t retiring following his lopsided 12 round unanimous decision loss to Mairis Briedis (22-0, 18 KOs) last Saturday night in a fight for the vacant WBC cruiserweight title in Dortmund, Germany. Huck lost his IBO title in the fight, but there’s a question whether he could get the title back. Briedis reportedly didn’t pay the sanctioning fee for the IBO title, according to Fightnews.
By Scott Gilfoid: Undefeated Mairis Briedis (22-0, 18 KOs) won a one-sided 12 round unanimous decision over former WBO champion Marco Huck (40-4-1, 27 KOs) to win the vacant WBC cruiserweight title on Saturday night at the Westfalenhalle, in Dortmund, Germany. The final judges’ scores were 116-111, 117-110 and 118-109. Boxing News 24 scored the fight 12 rounds to 0 in favor of Briedis. This is the WBC title that was recently in possession of Tony Bellew, who was unable to defend it due to a hand injury he suffered in his last fight against David Haye.
By Jim Dower: Undefeated #1 WBC Mairis Briedis (21-0, 18 KOs) is the favorite to defeat former WBO champion Marco Huck (40-3-1, 27 KOs) in their fight tonight for the vacant WBO cruiserweight title in Dortmund, Germany. Briedis, 32, is a 2:1 favorite, according to Fight News. It’s very surprising to see Huck as the underdog in a fight because he’s been the favorite for many years in his fights with the exception of his match with heavyweight Alexander Povetkin in 2012.
By Jim Dower: Marco Huck (40-3-1, 27 KOs) and top ranked unbeaten #1 WBC contender Mairis Briedis (21-0, 18 KOs) both weighed in successfully on Friday for their fight this Saturday night for the vacant WBC cruiserweight title at the Westfalenhalle in Dortmund, Germany. Huck weighed in at 199.5 pounds, and looked sharp like he always does. Briedis came in at the same weight at 199.5 lbs. There was some concern that Briedis might not make the weight after he failed to be weighed in for the World Boxing Council’s 7-day weight check.

In this one against up and coming power puncher Mairis Briedis 21-0 (18), the recently vacated WBC Cruiserweight belt is up for grabs. Both fighters have very exciting styles which should make for an entertaining spectacle.

Huck will have his IBO cruiserweight title on the line for the fight. The 32-year-old Huck expects the fight to be a full out war from start to finish, as that’s how both guys like to fight.
By Scott Gilfoid: As I predicted, the World Boxing Council has designated that Marco Huck and Mairis Briedis will fight for the full WBC cruiserweight title this Saturday night on April 1 following change of title status for champion Tony Bellew. Due to Bellew’s hand injury that he sustained in his win over David Haye on March 4, he won’t be able to defend his title for some time. It’s good the WBC has made this move because Bellew might have sat on his title for months without vacating it.
