Purses: Broner $1M, Granados $250K

By Jim Dower: The purses are a little lopsided in favor of former four division world champion Adrien Broner for his fight tonight against Adrian Granados at the Cintas Center in Cincinnati, Ohio. Broner (32-2, 24 KOs) will be receiving a purse of $1 million compared to just $250,000 for Granados (18-4-2, 12 KOs), according to Dan Rafael.

The million purse for the 27-year-old Broner isn’t what many in the boxing world thought he would be making at this point in his career. Years earlier before Broner was beaten by Marcos Maidana and Shawn Porter, he was seen as a future pay-per-view star, and a fighter that would someday take over for Floyd Mayweather Jr. to carry the sport on his back.

Image: Adrien Broner vs. Adrian Granados preview and prediction

By Jeff Aranow: Adrien “The Problem” Broner (32-2, 24 KOs) has a very important fight tonight against one of the better fighters he’s faced lately in Adrian “Tigre” Granados (18-4-2, 12KOs) on Showtime Championship Boxing the Cintas Center, Cincinnati, Ohio. Broner needs to win and look good in doing so. He has a fighter that he should beat.

Granados is just a contender, and not someone that is going anywhere in the 140lb division.

Lamont Peterson challenges David Avanesyan on Feb. 18

Image: Lamont Peterson challenges David Avanesyan on Feb. 18

By Jeff Aranow: Former IBF light welterweight champion Lamont Peterson (24-3-1, 17 KOs) will be emerging from a long 16 month layoff next month when he challenges WBA World interim welterweight champion David Avanesyan (22-1-1, 11 KOs) on February 18 on the undercard of the Adrian Broner vs. Adrian Granados card at the Cintas Center at Xavier University in Cincinnati.

Peterson, 33, hasn’t done much to be fighting for a world title, even an interim title. That’s kind of disappointing that Peterson will be fighting for a title rather than someone a little more active with their boxing careers. The Avanesyan-Peterson fight will be the co-feature bout on the Broner vs. Granados card. It’ll be televised by Showtime.

Miguel Cotto to fight on February 25

cotto92

By Dan Ambrose: Former four division world champion Miguel Cotto (40-5, 33 KOs) will be fighting in early 2017 on February 25 against a still to be determined opponent, according to RingTV. Cotto’s fight is expected to be televised on HBO pay-per-view. Cotto will be fighting at junior middleweight for his February 25 fight.

The potential venue is at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. This is the same place where Saul Canelo Alvarez recently fought WBO junior middleweight champion Liam Smith on September 17 in front of 51,000 fans. Having the fight in Texas would normally make one think that Cotto could be fighting a popular Mexican fighter like Canelo, but in this case it doesn’t appear that he’s the option.

By Dan Ambrose: Former four division world champion Miguel Cotto and former IBF light welterweight champion Lamont Peterson are in negotiations for a fight on December 3, according to RingTV. The fight isn’t finalized but there’s a good possibility that it will be taking place. If it does get made, it’ll be the first fight for both guys in 2016.

Peterson hasn’t fought since winning a controversial 10 round majority decision over Felix Diaz last October, and Cotto has been out of the ring since his 12 round decision loss to Saul Canelo Alvarez last November.

Peterson decisions Diaz in close 12rd MD

PBC Oct 17th VA boxing(Photo Credit: Suzanne Teresa/Premier Boxing Champions) By Jim Dower: In a very close fight that could have gone either way, Lamont Peterson (34-3-1, 17 KOs) edged #5 IBF 140lb contender Felix Diaz (17-1, 8 KOs) on Saturday afternoon on Premier Boxing Champions on NBC from the EagleBank Arena at George Mason University in Fairfax, VA.

This was not one of Peterson’s better performances. He was given a lot of close rounds by the judges in which he was getting hit with short punches from the 5’5″ Diaz. I thought the fight should have been scored a draw if not a win for Diaz. The judges scored it 114-114, 117-111 and 116-112.

Lamont Peterson defeats Felix Diaz live results

PBC Oct 17th VA boxing(Photo Credit: Suzanne Teresa/Premier Boxing Champions) By Tim Fletcher: Former IBF/WBA light welterweight champion Lamont Peterson (34-3-1, 17 KOs) won a close 12 round majority decision tonight over 2008 Olympic gold medalist Felix Diaz Jr (17-1, 8 KOs) at the EagleBank Arena at George Mason University in Fairfax, VA. THe final judges’ scores were 114-114, 117-111 and 116-112.

Peterson fought in spurts in the fight. He was effective with his body punching in rounds 2, 6 and 8. But he gave away a lot of the rounds to Diaz by not throwing enough punches, and getting nailed on the inside. When Peterson was in close, he needed to be throwing punches, but he failed to do that. This allowed the 5’5″ Diaz to win a lot of rounds that he shouldn’t have been able to win.

Lamont Peterson & Felix Diaz Jr make weight

Image: Lamont Peterson & Felix Diaz Jr make weightBy Dan Ambrose: Former IBF/WBA 140lb champion Lamont Peterson (33-3-1, 17 KOs) weighed in successfully on Friday for his fight against unbeaten 2008 Olympic gold medalist Felix Diaz Jr. (17-0, 8 KOs) for their fight this Saturday night on Premier Boxing Champions on NBC from the EagleBank Arena, in Fairfax, Virginia. Peterson weighed in at 144lbs. His opponent Diaz weighed in slightly heavier at 144.2lbs.

Peterson, 31, needs a win to keep himself in contention for a world title shot against IBF light welterweight champion Cesar Cuenca. Peterson lost his last fight in April to Danny Garcia by a 12 round majority decision.

It was a mistake on Peterson’s part to fight passively in the first seven rounds of the fight. He gave Garcia far too much respect, and this enabled him to win rounds by default. When Peterson finally did start fighting hard in the 8th, he discovered that it was easy for him to walk the shorter Garcia down and batter him with shots to the head and body.
