Martinez Given a Raw Deal In Fight With Cintron

cintron556By Chris Williams: Interim WBC light middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (44-1-2, 24 KOs) got a bad break in his fight with Kermit Cintron (30-2-1, 27 KOs) on Saturday night, when referee Frank Santore Jr. appeared to count out Cintron in the 7th after Martinez had knocked Cintron down with a hard left hand. However, Santore said that Cintron had gotten up at the count of nine, rather than ten, allowing the fight to continue. Whether that was so or not, two of the judges appeared to make a mess of the scores by ruling the fight as a 113-113 draw.

The first 2 rounds started out relatively slow and uneventful with both men feeling each other out. The unofficial ringside score had Cintron winning the first two rounds but it really could have gone either way.

Martinez, 33, despite being a little older than most of the top light middleweights in the division, may in fact be the best fighter among them. In contrast to big sluggers like Alfredo Angulo and James Kirkland, Martinez does it with his slick boxing skills which are a throwback to a young Roy Jones Jr.

Angulo To Fight Rivera on February 14th, Cintron vs. Martinez

Angulo, 26, a former 2004 Olympian for the Mexican team, was initially set to meet former welterweight champion Ricardo Mayorga, but he bailed out on the fight after apparently suffering an injury.
