Keith Thurman: Me and Kell Brook deserve Mayweather fight in September

thurman8888By Scott Gilfoid: WBA welterweight champion Keith Thurman doesn’t think Amir Khan deserves the fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. in September. Thurman notes that Khan hasn’t ever fought a strong punching welterweight, and the last time he fought a puncher in 2012, he was knocked out in the 4th round by light welterweight Danny Garcia.

Instead of Khan being the one to get the lucky lottery ticket for the Mayweather fight, Thurman thinks either himself of IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook should be the one that gets the fight.

Errol Spence is ready for Keith Thurman, says Mayweather

_DSC7984(Photo credit: Idris Erba/Mayweather Promotions) By Chris Williams: Floyd Mayweather Jr. says he sparred with unbeaten #8 WBA 147 pound contender Errol Spence (16-0, 13 KOs) in the past, and he feels he’s now ready to challenge WBA welterweight champion Keith Thurman in his next fight after Spence gets past junior middleweight Phil Lo Greco (26-1, 14 KOs) this Saturday night in their fight at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The Spence-Lo Greco fight will be the co-feature bout on the Adrien Broner vs. Shawn Porter card on Premier Boxing Champions on NBC. Spence, 25, was originally scheduled to fight slugger Roberto Garcia, but he was heavy this week and wasn’t going to be able to make the weight, so he was switched out for Lo Greco.

Mayweather should fight Keith Thurman next, says Lederman

thurman8888 By Allan Fox: Harold Lederman of HBO thinks Floyd Mayweather Jr. (48-0, 26 KOs) should face WBA World welterweight champion Keith Thurman (25-0, 21 KOs) next in his fight on September 12th. Lederman believes that the 26-year-old Thurman is the best welterweight out there who could give Mayweather a good fight.

Thurman isn’t in the running for Mayweather’s next fight, however. The guys that are being talked about as the two leading candidates for Mayweather to fight are Amir Khan and Kell Brook.

Khan: I want Broner, Thurman, Cotto, Bradley and Marquez, but not Brook

khan5899By Scott Gilfoid: Amir Khan still doesn’t know if he’s going to be getting the Floyd Mayweather Jr. fight in September, but that’s not keeping Khan from spreading his big fishing net around to try and catch some of the other big names in the boxing world who might be willing to entertain a fight with him in the near future.

What’s surprising is that Khan has included some big punchers among the list in Miguel Cotto and Keith Thurman. What’s not surprising is that Khan says that IBF welterweight Kell Brook isn’t on his list, and that he’s not going to fight him due to Brook still not facing the guys that he feels he should be facing.

Khan says he wants Cotto and Thurman

khan5555By Scott Gilfoid: While Amir Khan’s attention is currently on a fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. for this September, Khan is now saying that he’s interested in facing WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto and WBA welterweight champion Keith “One Time” Thurman.

Earlier today, Khan surprised a lot of boxing fans by revealing that he’s close to confirming a September fight against Mayweather. But by Khan saying that he’s interested in fighting Cotto and Thurman, it looks like a transparent attempt by Khan to get a better deal with Mayweather.

Santa Cruz wants Mayweather to fight Thurman in September

thurman5By Chris Williams: WBC super bantamweight champion Leo Santa Cruz is hoping that Floyd Mayweather Jr. (48-0, 26 KOs) faces WBA welterweight champion Keith Thurman (25-0, 21 KOs) for his final fight of his pro career in September, even though it would be a step down for Mayweather due to him holding the WBA Super World welterweight title.

Thurman holds the WBA regular 147lb title. Santa Cruz likes Thurman’s toughness and punching power, and he feels he would give Mayweather a hard fight if he were to be the guy that faced him.

Hearn looking at matching Joshua against David Price, Dillian Whyte or Chisora in September

joshua99By Scott Gilfoid: After Anthony Joshua’s easy 2nd round knockout victory over journeyman Kevin Johnson (29-7-1, 14 KOs) last Saturday night, Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn says he wants to step Joshua up against the likes of Dillian Whyte, Dereck Chisora or David Price for his fight in September.

That’s when Hearn finally wants to step Joshua up a couple of levels. However, it’s unclear whether Hearn will be able to get any of those names at that time. I tend to doubt it unless he throws some crazy money at those guys. I don’t think for a second that Hearn is serious about wanting to match Joshua against Whyte because he already lost to Whyte in the amateurs in a fight where Joshua was knocked down and nailed repeatedly with bone-jarring shots.

Hearn mentions Rios, Thurman and Pacquiao as potential opponents for Brook

brook3By Allan Fox: Matchroom Sport promoter Eddie Hearn is interested in upgrading the opposition for his fighter IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook (35-0, 24 KOs) following his noncompetitive fight against Frankie Gavin (22-2, 13 KOs) on Saturday at the O2 Arena in London, UK.

Hearn put together an in house fight between Brook and Rios, both of which he promotes, and the fight was disappointingly one-sided with Brook having his way from start to finish in a 6th round knockout victory. After the fight, Hearn mentioned being frustrated that Amir Khan won’t agree to fight Brook.
