Who is boxing’s next superstar?

canelo4566By Niall Kaye: It is hard to envisage boxing without the presence of Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. Similarly, many feared for the state of the sport following Muhammad Ali’s eventual retirement in 1981, but the sport survived, with the introduction of Sugar Ray Leonard and Mike Tyson going some way to quenching the indomitable void left by Ali.

Boxing, like any sport, is cyclical with new talents constantly emerging, whose paths eventually converge like Mayweather and Pacquiao’s belatedly have. These two maestro’s void will be difficult to fill for the rising stars of today, but the most likely candidates under 30 years old to do so are listed below:

Keith Thurman challenges Amir Khan, calls him a “soft cherry picker”

thurman5By Scott Gilfoid: An animated and highly agitated WBA welterweight champion Keith Thurman (25-0, 21 KOs) called #1 WBC Amir Khan (30-3, 19 KOs) for a fight. Thurman says he wants to fight him, and that he sees Khan as a totally overrated fighter.

Both Thurman and Khan share the same adviser in Al Haymon, so the fight should in theory be one that can be made. But it would be up to Haymon and Khan whether they would want to take that fight. Thus far it seems like there’s no interest from their side in putting the fight together against the hard hitting Thurman.

khan53By Rusty Nate: The situation surrounding IBF Welterweight Champion Kell Brook (34-0-23 KOs) and Amir Khan (30-3-19 KOs) is getting to the point of embarrassing for British Boxing.

Kell Brook recently defeated his mandatory IBF challenger Jo Jo Dan (34-3-18ko) by 4th round stoppage very comfortably. Brook barely took a decent shot and looked in control from the start, flooring Dan four times on route to victory.

Khan: Kell Brook needs to fight guys like Keith Thurman

SHEFFIELD-BROOK-DANN14(Photo Credit: Lawrence Lustig) By Scott Gilfoid: Amir Khan was unimpressed with IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook’s 4th round stoppage win over Jo Jo Dan last Saturday night at the Motorpoint Arena in Sheffield, UK. Khan says that Brook is making a big deal out of fighting a fighter that he considers little more than a C-class fighter in Jo Jo Dan.

Khan says that if Brook wants to impress the boxing fans and accomplish something, he needs to start fighting the world class type opposition like WBA welterweight champion Keith Thurman.

Mayweather can beat Pacquiao any way he wants, says Thurman

LR_TRAPPFOTOS-MAYPAC PRESSER-8132(Photo credit: Stephanie Trapp/Mayweather Promotions) By Chris Williams: WBA welterweight champion Keith Thurman sees the mega-fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr and Manny Pacquiao being a situation where Mayweather can win it anyway he wants against the Filipino star. In other words, Mayweather can decide how he wants to win – whether it be by a competitive bout or one-sided with him not being touched.

Thurman believes that it’ll be Mayweather who will decide how close he wants the fight. If he goes into the bout wanting to completely shutout Pacquiao, then he’ll do it easily.

Erislandy Lara Calls out Keith Thurman on Twitter

thurman8888By Everest Castaneda: After Keith “One Time” Thurman (25-0, 21 KOs) disposed of the rugged Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero (32-3-1, 18 KOs) in an exciting 12 round unanimous decision, Erislandy “The American Dream” Lara (20-2-2, 12 KOs) went onto Twitter and took shots at the undefeated fighter.
